Beguiler Pathfinder conversion?

Homebrew and House Rules

The Beguiler has always been one of my favorite classes in 3.5. Anyone know where I could find a conversion of it? Or maybe even just some thoughts on what would need to be changed?

Sovereign Court

Honestly? Update it's hit points, class skills and spell list and your done. No more work needed on that particular class, it's perfectly acceptable for Pathfinder.

You might want to look at the Sandman Bard variant, which was essentially the Beguiler+Spellthief update to PF. It's great fun- currently playing one now.

However, if that's not your scene it might take a bit of work to properly "update" the Beguiler. At it's core you can just bump the hit dice to match the base attack bonus (don't remember what it was) and modify it's skill list to pathfinder standards, but the spells are where it gets tricky. Pathfinder eliminated most/all of the "save or die" spells from the game. Spells that out-and-out killed you were reduced to gobs of damage (yawn), and spells that essentially killed you or ruined you to failure were nerfed to allow multiple saves and/or lesser effects. The core spells are fine, since they've already been "pathfinderized," but you'll need to comb the list for the splat book spells and see if there's anything that jumps above the new standard for spellcasting power.

Morgen is right, the class is pretty balanced with other pathfinder class.

However, here's a link to my take on pathfinderizing the Beguiler.

N.B. I've always considered the beguiler as a social rogue with spellcaster abilities so my conversion reflects that.

I am pretty much in love with your conversion Mordo--it's extremely similar to what I was thinking. My only question is: is it too good?

Like you said, lowering it to a level 6 caster might be more in balance, but that would probably warrant heavy re-tooling of the other class benefits (-SR and +DC while concealed doesn't make sense to me unless you're a full caster) and it would lose some of the original concept.

edit: sorry, I meant Mordo. too many m-names :)

Thanks but I didn't do much more than bring up HD and BAB to medium progression and removed the spells that were not in the corerule book.

It may be a bit too powerful, unfortunally I didn't have the chance to playtest it yet (being away on contract work for two years now is hit pretty hard on roleplaying sessions) If you do playtest it as is give me you're feedback.

On the other hand, I don't think removing cloaked casting and surprised casting is a good idea. I'd first trim down the spell progression to match the bard and test it this way before doing anything else.

Sorry for the bump. I've been looking for pathfinder conversions of the beguiler and came across this one in another thread. Has anybody played with this conversion? Does it look too powerful?
