Cross-Book PDF Bookmarks?

Product Discussion

The split chapter versions of the Pathfinder PDFs have bookmarks that work between the chapters, so long as the appropriate PDF file is in the same directory and hasn't been renamed.

Sadly, this does not seem to be the case between books. Spell and feat lists in Bestiary stat blocks would be an awesome place for an inter-PDF bookmark. I would gladly give up my ability to sanely rename my PDFs for this capability. Though giving them sane file names to begin with would be nice.

(Also, as has been mentioned elsewhere, no hyperlinks in Bestiary 2 makes me a sad entity)

Sadly, the PDF format's support for that isn't very robust—all of the linked files and folders must be in a known hierarchy, with file and folder names that exactly match, and I don't have a lot of confidence that even our best attempt wouldn't be busted right out of the gate on at least some platforms due to things we have no control over, like unzipping utilities and differences in filesystem naming conventions.

If they were at least clever enough to pop up a dialogue box letting you locate and link up files it can't find, we might have given it a try, but it's not clever—it's just fragile. So, as the technology stands, attempting cross-publication links would probably make for more unhappy and confused customers than happy ones.

On a related note, Vic, is it possible to "unlock" the bookmark section of Paizo PDFs (without unlocking the actual text), so that custom bookmarks can be entered?

Sadly, that's another area where the PDF format is limiting—the security controls effectively amount to "on" or "off."

Figured as much. Thanks for the response.
