What is Living Pathfinder?

Its a small - but growing - community of players and DMs who all create characters and run PBP adventures using the same set of rules. Characters can and do switch between adventures with various DMs, each adventure has a judge in place both to impartially settle any rules quibbling - has not been an issue yet - and to take over as DM should the DM be unable to continue for whatever reason. All of this should ensure that you can always get a game for your character and continue advancing.

What sources are allowed?

Core Rulebook and the APG, with the majority of the playable bestiary races available, the Adventurer's Armory will likely be available for use shortly. Item crafting is banned - though you may say you crafted purchased items for RP reasons - characters will likely have slightly over average wealth per level as a rule.

What are the Character Creation rules?

Abilities are generated with 20 point buy, each character gets 2 traits, and begins with 150gp to spend.

How do I sign up?

Come along and check out the Living Pathfinder Wiki

The wiki gives character creation information, tells you about the world we play in - which you are encouraged to contribute to, tells you how to submit adventure proposals as a DM, and allows you to have a nosey at existing characters.

How big is the community currently?

There are 24 existing characters, 16 of these are in games - 2 were created recently and are in the process of being approved - with at least two adventures currently in the approval process. There seems to be no shortage of DMs amongst our number happily.

How long has the community been going?

A few months there have already been several successfully completed adventures, and there are a number of 2nd level characters.

What Experience progression is used?

Very Fast, which is to say we use the fast progression, but also award XP - and gold - for time served. A 1st level character earns 7xp and 6gp per day, and this scales with level.

Questions?

Hopefully the Living Pathfinder Wiki will be able to answer most questions, if not fire away here and I will try to address them as soon as possible.

Sovereign Court

One of the biggest advantages of LPF is that you will not end up with a stranded character if your DM vanishes, that character can continue with all the XP and wealth they have earned.

The community aspect occasionally makes things take a little longer for approvals and the like, but it has the advantage nof keeping things fair and balanced and it's really a non issue with the glacial speed of your average PBP.

Come on, you know you want to. :)

Ok, I'll check it out. Might make a summoner, always wanted to try one at a low level. :)

Log into the Living Pathfinder RPG Wiki and 'Create a Page' with the name "Character Name (Player Name)" - where the names of your character and ENWorld User Name would be inserted in the appropriate places.

What do this mean? Do we need an ENWorld account to play Living Pathfinder?

Sovereign Court

No - in that it doesn't mean that, but yes, you do need an account there I'm afraid, free and easy to sign up for though. Look forward to seeing what you come up with - I'm Aldern Foxglove over there btw, so feel free to PM me there to if you have any issues.

What that means is that in order to create your character on the wiki you need to hit the Creat a Page tab - if you go HERE look to the right hand side of the page in a little box underneath the search box and you should see it - it's dark red.

Hit that and then follow the rest of the steps, if you have any more troubles you can always give me your characters name, and your enworld username, and I can set up the template sheet for you so you can edit it. The main thing to remember is that when you edit you need to hit the source button so you can see the sheet code. I recommend finding a character using the class you select and using their sheet for comparison purposes.

I am afraid I'm rather bad at explaining these things, but its actually far simpler than I'm making it sound, and you soon get the hang of it.

Sovereign Court

If any one is interested in checking out some of the existing games to see what you can expect I'll post some links. Please do not post in the game threads.

LPF Recruitment pop in and say hello!

The Sunken Temple

The Green Faerie

Bats in the Belfry This game, which I'm in, just lost its DM - temporarily we hope - and the judge has stepped in to take over using the detailed adventure proposal. I run Izzik Deeks pun wielding Summoner with b!#$*y Sphinx eidolon.

And find the Living Pathfinder Social Group here where proposals for the world, adding books, etc., are discussed and voted upon.

Hey Rellen, I am Gerald007 over at EN. Thanks for checking over my character submission for me...I appreciate it.

If the character gets approval, do I just hang out and wait for a spot to open up in a game? Do I need to make a post anywhere that I have a character available for consideration?

Sovereign Court

Very welcome Gerald, to get into a game hop into the tavern and RP in there for a bit - or at least announce your presence you should find you get offered a game slot fairly quickly.

There are a couple of games about ready to go - one is mine and is for 2nd level characters though - and I'm just about to submit a proposal for a 1st level game. I would be very surprised if you aren't up and running in a game by next week.

Grand Lodge

This looks really neat -- i will join you (with a new toon) in the tavern later tonight!

Sovereign Court

Look forward to seeing you there BraxtheSage.

Shadow Lodge

I joined and made a character (http://livingpf.wikia.com/wiki/Beckett_the_Raven_Knight). Should be interesting.

Sovereign Court

Happy to have you Beckett. We are going to persuade more people to step up to DM at this rate, I think that's ten recruits since I put the thread up!

They owe you, rellen. Nice work...

Sovereign Court

I'll warn everyone that we are currently in the holiday slowdown period, we're still trying to keep things ticking along, but the pace is much slower than it normally is.

Liberty's Edge

Do you need DMs?

(not really interested in playing, these days.)

Sovereign Court

We certainly do, there's really no requirement to be a player to - though we'd be delighted to have you in either or both capacities. You can find the rules for submitting an adventure proposal on the wiki.

Bear in mind that because of the nature of the community we keep treasure to by the book levels - over the course of an adventure not an encounter, so you might earn nothing from a monster attack, but get "the monsters" in an encounter with NPCs, etc. Beyond that sort of thing you should have a great deal of freedom, the world is still largely undefined so you have plenty to play with, etc.

Liberty's Edge

How many characters can we make?

Sovereign Court

You get 1 character to begin with, but get another once your 1st character reaches second level. The basic idea is that this ensures some level of commitment to the community, etc. Some impatient buggers - me being the first - have gone ahead and created there 2nd characters in advance placing them in the Unfinished characters section on the wiki until they are actually eligable to be submitted.

Liberty's Edge

1-Can I change the name of the character later?
2-My favorite class will be my second class. How can I note this in my sheet?

Liberty's Edge

Interesting, she says now having had time to read through your material.

In the 'classic' shared campaign model, a set of adventures are developed for community use rather than each DM being expected to write his own (although of course the creative ones are encouraged to contribute to the stockpile!).

If a suitable idea occurs I'll write it up for you.

Sovereign Court

Ravenath: I don't think it would be a problem, you would have to copy and paste your current character wikipage and make a new one though - since I don't think you can edit a threads title. Obviously it would be better to change the name before you begin adventuring.

Megan Robertson: We won't be running the same adventure twice, we are a small enough community that we don't need to do this, we're not talking thousands of players like the PFS or Living Greyhawk. We would certainly allow you to offer up an adventure for someone else to run, but my impression is that you would have trouble getting another DM to run it, most of us seem to enjoy creating our own adventures, though we have agreed in principle that existing modules could be adapted to the setting. Obviously this is all speculation on my part, other DMs may well be up for it if you ask.

Liberty's Edge

I have noticed a problem here:
I began yesterday creating my character. Today, I continued editing it, but I haven't logged. And I could change the character sheet being a guest! So anybody can change my sheet, even if he hasn't an account!

Can this be avoided in anyway?

Sovereign Court

I don't think so, I can't really see it being a problem though. Judges usually do minor edits during the approval process so its actually quite handy.

I can't really see a situation where it would be a problem and you can see who has edited and what the changes are so any unauthorized changes should be easy to correct.

If you are worried about it there is a Rogues Gallery thread on EnWorld that we used to use where you could save a non editable draft of your character. Living Pathfinder Rogue's Gallery

Liberty's Edge

Good.
Another question: what do I write down in the "Level ups" section of my sheet?

Sovereign Court

Well nothing at the moment, you can even delete it if you like and paste it back in when you do level. Basically its just to show the Judges what you have changed on level up so they only have to look over that rather than everything.

For example here is the level up info for one of our 2nd level characters - a rogue.

Level 2:
Class: Rogue
BAB: +0 to +1
Fort: +0 to +0
Ref: +2 to +3
Will: +0 to +0
Feat: n/a
Features: Evasion, Rogue Talent: Finesse Rogue
HP: 8 = Max -2 (06) + CON (01) + FC (01)
Skill Pts: +10 = +8 (Class) +1 (Race) +10 (Old Total) +1 (INT) = 20 (New Total)
add one rank: Acrobatics, Appraise, Climb, Disable Device, Escape Artist, Knowledge (Local),
Perception, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand, Stealth

Liberty's Edge

Well. Character finished. Character posted. Character approved.
What now?

Shadow Lodge

I posted a character about a week ago, and on the wiki it still says awaiting approval? I posted it on the ENworld site, too. Was just wondering if the was something wrong and how do I find out (both what is wrong and when it is approved). I just moved and only have internet on my phone for now, which makes ENworld rediculously difficult to see or navigate.

Sovereign Court

Ravaneth, head for the tavern RP a bit and an adventure should be along shortly - I'm just putting through a 1st level adventure now.

Beckett, I looked over your character and found a few issues which I posted, I'll copy them here. The main problem was that you have given hima Golorion background and we are playing in a different setting - see the wiki. Change up the background and explain that swim acp to me and I'll approve him.

But since play takes place on EnWorld not being able to navigate the site is going to be problematic.

EnWorld Character Submission Thread wrote:

Gave Sir Beckett the Raven Knight a thorough look and cannot approve him at this time. I'll list the issues that need to be addressed below.

* No deity given.
* Stars in the CS skills colum - I assume this designate skills you plan to take later, if so that's fine.
* Swim modifier looks off to me, but might be right if you are including both acp for armor and medium load, can't seem to find whether you are supposed to or not, so possibly fine.
* Made a few corrections to equipment list - for example Studded Leather was listed as 5gp.
* I make your remaining gold 26 gp and 8cp not 17gp 7sp 7cp.
* Background needs changing from Golorion.

Liberty's Edge

Two more questions:
-Is there any index of the pages in the wiki? It's terrible to navigate it.
-Where is the tavern post? I have navigated the 7 pages of the forum and only find one called "Current Tavern Occupants". Could it be that?

Sovereign Court

Well you have the first page which has links to everything, characters are under the Approved Characters, I'm not sure what else you want a link to? I don't think that there is anything not lined on the wikis first page so I'm a bit puzzled by your comment.

The tavern is posted in EnWorld's Talking the Talk forum, there is a link to it on the first page of the wiki under the heading important places - it's called the Dunn Wright Inn. You can find it HERE.

We don't seem to use the "Current Tavern Occupants" thread much anymore, its sort of a vestigial thread, part of us trying to figure out the best way to operate as a community, etc.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry, I was confused by the lack of a navigation menu. Now I understand: the main page is the main menu ;)
Thanks.

Sovereign Court

No problemo. :)

Sovereign Court

Just posted my 1st level Adventure "Buyer's Remorse", filling up fast so book now to avoid disappointment!

Work's been kicking my butt today, Rellen. Just saw your game and snagged the last spot. Thanks a ton!

I think RPGA may be claiming ownership to the "Living" trademark for network campaigns. You might want to look that up.

Sovereign Court

EnWorld has had living games for nearly a decade so I wish them luck with that, lol.

Happy to have you Gerald, though I'm not sure it's the last spot I might well allow another player or two if there's the demand - 6 is definitely the maximum I would consider.

The more the merrier, Rellen...I'm just glad to have gotten in!

Dark Archive

Sounds like a plan to join in on these shenanigans... I'll probably get something up soon - just new to that site, and so forth.

Sovereign Court

Welcome aboard Rizzym Jaderenai, look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Shadow Lodge

To Rellen I wasnt sure about the deities. I am based of of some pretty generic deities of Good and Light. I did ask about this, though and about the concepts. Will check out the Swim, (should be -2 I think). As for the background, I was planning on simply changing the names when I learned more about the world to something appropriate, but wanted to leave them for the moment so that others would understand the intentions. Should have internet at home tonight, though, so can check it out better.

Sovereign Court

Sorry Beckett we will need the names to be changed before approval, etc. Take a look through the deities listed under Divine Archetypes there is probably something that fits your bill there otherwise just make something up, you only need to give a few details.

Sovereign Court

Couple of new adventures going through approval process that should be kicking off shortly.

Sovereign Court

45 characters, and growing! :)

Hello all. I am very interested, but I am a noob at PBP. I have created both a LPF account, but not a character yet, along with an Enworld account. Both under the same tag.

Hey Rellen, can you give me a link to any discussions of how to easily add tags and things like that over at ENworld? My posts look terrible since I can't seem to get things lined out right.

And I am still failing my Will save against the dice roller...

Sovereign Court

I don't actually know of any discussions, but I'll show you all the ones I know. Please note I'm rather addled with the flu at the moment, and not the best explicator at the best of times...

To put something in a spoiler use [sblock]Blahblahblah.[/sblock]

To put something in a named spoiler [sblock=Actions]Blahblahblahblah.[/sblock]

To use that grey block thing - not a good description - which I put whose up next in, etc. Its Borric is up!

To insert a link - though there is a tool for this in the top of the post box thing - its Potatoes which will show up as Potatoes on the page and be underlined and link colored.

To insert and image I believe its [img]image link[/img], but I always use the button in the tool bar for these - looks like mountains.

The dice roller is fairly simple. Just make your post, look at it and hit the dice roller link in the bottom right hand corner. This should bring you to the dice roller. At the top is a white box into which you type the purpose of the roll, say Sylvain's Initiative. Below this are a number of different dies, find the die you want and type in the number of times you wish to roll that die - so 1d20 for an init roll, or 5d6 for a cl 5 fireball, etc. Scroll down to the top line below the dice this has a box beside it and two selectable "buttons" put your modifier to the dice into the box and then select whether that value is positive or negative using the buttons. So if rolling init simply input your init modifier, then scroll down and hit roll - don't worry about the stuff below its rarely needed.

Thanks Rellen.

Sovereign Court

Not a problem, always nice to have an excuse to boost the thread up from the depths anyway. :)

Come on people, we now have three adventures due to kick off shortly! one that's ready to go as soon as it fills and another two that will begin just after the new year! So now is the ideal time to make a character and dive right in!

We can only have one character until that character either levels or kicks the bucket, correct?
