Pathfinder Chronicles PbP - Welcome to Varisia

Gamer Connection

Welcome to Varisia –
The journey from Korvosa has been long and harrowing. The Varisian Gulf has pounded the the Crystal’s Favour mercilessly in the last leg of the journey from Magnimar. The Crystal’s Favour, a merchant sloop from Korvosa, is bound for Riddleport to trade her precious cargo and deliver would be heroes of the age.

Now accepting applications for 4-5 spots for this PBP Pathfinder Chronicles Adventure. Set in the port city of Riddleport, there is wealth and renown for those ambitious or brazen enough to seize it.

I will be starting with a single adventure, and upon completion may expand it to a campaign depending on interest.

Characters:
Characters
Only the bravest and elite will survive Riddleport, as such characters will begin their epic careers with the following parameters…
Characters begin at 1st level
25 Point Buy for Attributes
Max HP at first level
Max gold at first level
Any race or class from Core or APG accepted.
Any alignment except evil is appropriate.

Pacing
I am shooting for 4-5 posts per week, but will be flexible based on pace.

What this is not…
Despite how this may appear, it is not the published Second Darkness Adventure Path, but shares the timeline and back drop.

I will throw in my hat on this one.
Morzane
CN Half-orc male Witch 1
Familiar: raven named "Bones"
Patron: Plague
Hex: Healer

Morzane has grown up in the wilderness of the Varisia. At an early age he was abandoned in the woods by his mother for his mixed heritage. Fending for himself, Morzane mistakenly walked into a rotten glade. Within the glade, he slept with terrible dreams. Upon waking Bones was sitting on his chest. Since that day, Morzane has been learning of the strange powers of the glade from Bones.

Morzane and Bones eventually found themselves traveling to the port city of Riddle Port. Bones isn't quite sure why Morzane wishes to be there but Morzane has been longing for the company of others. Perhaps he can even find a place to use his new powers. In nature, all is balance. Without death and decay, new life cannot spring.

Aside from adjusting stats from 20 point to 25 point, and a few other tweaks here and there, this butcher is ready to go...

From another PbP that lifted off, but soon ran out of steam...

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

I'd like to throw a hat in as well.

Fasterly Bowspittle
N Gnome male Cavalier 1 (Order of the Cockatrice)

Fasterly was always the oddball in his family. Constantly preening and strutting, he was the butt of many jokes until at last he decided to leave and seek his fortune. As he tells it, if they wouldn't appreciate his greatness, he would find a place that will. Riddleport seems like a decent enough place for a gnome of above average charm and skill to make his fortune, and best of all, to make certain that everyone knows of his fortune.

This is Graynore again. I have another concept to throw in. This was a 20point buy character that I never got to use. The idea being an exmilitary/duelist that now works as a blacksmith. Eventually I wanted him to learn to use firearms but i'm not married to the concept. He is set up for tanking.

I'd like to submit a character for this at work now so will post it in about 12 hours.

I'd like to submit a character for this at work now so will post it in about 12 hours.

Great!

Here is who I am tracking so far -

Graynore - Half-Orc Witch or Human Ranger
If no one else picks a healer, I recommend the Witch
Ghorum - Dwarf Ranger
James Martin - Gnome Cavalier
Fatty - TBD

That's enough to move forward, but I still have one more vacancy if anyone else is interested.

Once you finalize your character, please email me at AlvinGraham at Comcast dot net, or post a link (I'm fond of the character sheet in alias profile like Ghorum Kraak).

Once I have you have your complete character, I'll add a little to your background to tie you in the starting point.

Important Character Creation Point
I forgot to add that you may select 2 traits (from different categories) to begin with.

Thank you for the rapid responses. The alignment tone of the group so far should make this quite interesting and allow for a darker, grittier game.

Liberty's Edge

Why not, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I was debating looking for a good PbP to play in as I'm running one but still have the itch to have a character somewhere and this sounds good.

I have a bunch of different concepts I've been wanting to test out, so I can redesign based on the rest of the party, but my two biggest preferences are below.

A human Varisian rogue who grew tired of living in the slum outside the gates of Korvosa and wants to make a name for himself. He's a wanna be treasure hunter who picked up a lot of his skills from a troop of street performers, learning both their act(thrown daggers, acrobatics, ect) as well as how to fast talk and find a mark in a crowd. Riddleport would be a good place to get away from the nobility style politics of Korvosa and make real use of his talents. I picture him as being chaotic good with some neutral leanings, he tries to play off more mercenary than his conscience lets him be.

The other thing I have had rolling around in my head is an oracle of knowledge, though other than having interest in the class I admit that one is less defined. Probably either Chelish or highborn Korvosan, this character wouldn't be so much the bookworm type but instead more of an advisor, someone who could take to whoever looked to be the defacto leader of the party and serve as their major domo. I think the character would have a great interest in history and ruins and Riddleport is an excellent place for that, and would probably be true neutral trying to look to all sides for a means that will best accomplish the end for all involved.

I have a lot of fun making characters, so I'll probably whip these two both up tonight to better show off(and formalize) what I have in mind. I know you'll be looking through a number of applications on the board for a PbP like this, so no worries if you decide on someone else just because the characters are made.

Liberty's Edge

Count me in!
I'll make my character at one!

OK, I'm going to go ahead and call this closed.

This is who I have as in...

Graynore - Half-Orc Witch or Human Ranger
If no one else picks a healer, I recommend the Witch
Ghorum - Dwarf Ranger
James Martin - Gnome Cavalier
Fatty - TBD
Tarlane - Human Rogue or Human Oracle
Ravenath - TBD

I know I said I was only going with 5, but Ravenath is running a game I'm in (Ultimate magic playtest) so I'm going to be a softie and let him in too.

I'll be opening a Play-By-Post Discussion Post tonight to move conversation too and as soon as I'm comfortable, I'll roll the game out in Play-By-Post Forum (probably before we get characters finalized so we can get this thing rolling!)

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good and I appreciate the in.

As I said, I'll make both characters tonight to get a better feel for them, and can go with either one based on the needs of the party or if the DM feels one of them will fit his story better.

Sounds good. I'll wait and see what everyone else goes with.

Shadow Lodge

Room for one more? I want to play either a Cleric or Oracle, likely either Human or Half-Orc. PF Assimar?

Liberty's Edge

Alright, here is what I am thinking the two characters are going to look like. Once we determine which of the two will fit the group better I'll make an alias for the character and put their stats into the profile.

Still need to decide upon names and detail the backgrounds some, but those are always the harder parts.

Quick question: are we using traits? And are there any limitations?

Liberty's Edge

James, looks like the DM said we were using two traits(from different categories) in one of his later posts.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

Ah ha! That's what I get for not reading all the way down the thread, I tell you.

I wanna play!? Did I just miss the boat?

I have never played in a play by post campaign, but think it would be fun.

Let me know if I can still pitch a possible character?

Liberty's Edge

I'm a Dwarf cleric of the Death and Healing. Pharasma is his Deity.

I'm a 7th level Vice President!

May I present the honorable and justifiably loved Fasterly Bowspittle? Please, hold your applause until the wonder that is Fasterly has had time to sink into your person. Excessive exposure to this level of awesome may cause your hair to fall out. Thank you.

Mines a Dwarven Fighter coming soon.

Liberty's Edge

Looks like we have someone interested in a cleric but we don't have a trap sniffer yet, so I am probably going to be trying to flesh out my rogue character a bit more, DM.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

Hmm, we don't seem to have any arcanists and we're heavy on melee. Mind if I float a sorcerer instead of a cavalier?

Krag Bloodfist can be found here

Krag spent his youth in the depths of the a cold hard mountain training under his father as a warrior. The Bloodfist clan are proud warriors and will fight any foe head on. When Krag suggested to his father maybe they should fortify there home a little instead of attacking their foes constantly an argument broke out in the grand hall, after a lot of shouting and smashing of anything that happened to be at hand, Krag decided it would be best if he let things cool down for a decade or two. With that he grabbed what little he had he found himself in RiddlePort on the path of adventure.

Liberty's Edge

I believe we(potentially) have a witch in the party who covers some level of arcane.

Well, for my dwarf ranger, I'm going for the front-line fighter type, envisioning a 4-foot-something threshing machine wielding two Dwarven Waraxes...

Progression would look something like this (**Thanks to Ad Astra on these boards for his advice!**):

Feats:

1st: Weapon Focus [Dwarven War Axe] (martial wpn for dwarf)
2nd; Two Weapon Fighting (from Ranger class - no DEX requirement!)
3rd: Double Slice
4th: +1 STR
5th: Two Weapon Defense (chosen as regular feat - only req. is TWF)
6th: Improved Two Weapon Fighting (combat style choice)

With a few buffs, Ghorum could be a bit of a butcher. With a 25 point buy, maybe more so!

Anyway, I think two warriors for the group is good (both dwarves!). I would say play what you want, and we'll figure out roles as we go...

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16, 2011 Top 32

Okay, I think I'll rework Fasterly as a sorcerer. Even with a witch, it won't hurt to have another arcanist. Plus, I don't think Fasterly the Cavalier will be needed as much with a fighter and a ranger in the mix.

Edit: this way I can decide which to go with when we start. As I love making characters, this is not a problem for me.

Kelgrith this is a character I mooted for another pbp game - missed the cutoff before so hoping he can be considered this time round:

Skäne “Countless” Ingvârssonn appears to be the archetypal Viking; Tall and brawny who bears a number of scars, wears his wild reddish-blond hair braided and sports an unkempt beard which frames his icy blue eyes.

However there is more to this Ulfen than meets the eye: As one of the many bastard sons of Ingvâr Sharptunga - an infamous skald of the North, he possesses a measure of his late father’s talent in battle songs. Born and raised in the roughouse city of Bildt in the Land of The Linnorm Kings, Skäne's life to date have been a series of blood feuds, duels and misadventures all caused by his fathers questionable honour and reputation.

Now exiled from his homeland, Skäne now plies his trade with mace and voice wherever there is a reason to fight, the coin to hire him and a potential place in the sagas to claim for himself...

Skäne is a Bard [Savage Skald archtype] who enjoys a scrap and a song as much as the next Ulfen. I'm a fan of traits so will probably fire some of them into his creation if selected...

Here's Skäne for consideration...

Liberty's Edge

You have the ultimate version of Kromoro, the Pharasma's cleric of Death and Healing.
If there is something to be changed, please tell me.

I still need to put up the fixes for my dwarf ranger, but I should have them done later today (worked 12 hours overnight, so time for some sleep!)

So, to be absolutely sure, is a party with three dwarves just asking for trouble?!

Hmm...food for thought... ;-)

Liberty's Edge

Definitely! ^_^

After toying with the idea of a sorcerer, I think I'll stay with the cavalier. He's a good face man and it looks as if we could use a charismatic person. Plus he's pretty darn fun and I like the idea of playing a puffed up popinjay of a gnome.

Wouldn't that be "Pint-sized Puffed-up Popinjay"? ;-)

Gotta love alliteration... :D

This group looks like it'll be a lot of fun. Can't wait!

P.S. - almost done with character...

It's definitely a rough and tumble group.

Well, this is kromoro! Battle Priest of Healing and Death. Praised be Pharasma!

The game is now full

The current player list is...

GraynoreHalf-Orc Witch or Human Ranger
Ghorum Kraak - Dwarf Ranger
Fasterly Bowspittle - Gnome Cavalier
Krag BloodfistDwarf Fighter
Tarlane - Human Rogue
KromoroDwarf Cleric

I have everyone's characters but Graynore, but I think it's enough to get started. The OOC Discussion thread has been posted and the first game post will go up tonight after work.

For alternates in case someone drops, I have...

Skane / Black Dow
Beckett
Cristopher Tomas

In case anyone needs it, the OOC thread is up here!

Join our madness! Let the adoration of the gnome begin!
