Since the point of the WoP system is flexibility and modularity, I was left wondering why not break up some of the words into 2? In particular I was thinking of the energy words that have a carrier effect such as fatigued, slowed, etc on their targets. Examples are Acid Wave that does damage plus gives the sickened condition, Caustic Cloud that does acid damage and fatigues, Frost Fingers that does damage and staggers, Ice Blast that does damage and entangles, etc.

Why not make them cheaper for the damage portions, and have additional words that allow you to add in minor other conditions such as sickened, entangled, fatigue, staggered, etc. that could be added to any other word? If you are concerned that some of these effects only thematically work with certain base types, you could put a restriction on them such as fatigued that would only work with cold or fire words, etc.

Because the more mix and match variables you have, the more it slows down game play as the player sorts through more combinations.

Take a look at the the target words. They deliberately combine range and area/number of targets. It's the difference between choosing one from column A and one from column B vs. picking all the individual ingredients.
