Retcon. Khalid retreats toward Linah before the creature has the opportunity to strike him again.
Wounded, the snakes gaze moves between Sajan and Grall before striking out at its most painful attacker. Again it is on target, its teeth penetrating into Grall's torso and ripping through his leather armour like paper.

Linah takes a step toward the retreating Khalid and gazes in horror at the back lines already spreading across his skin from the ugly bite wounds. She quickly sends a burst of healing magic into his body.
Grall is up. You have lost your flank buddy.
Grall |
Grall tries to shake off the poison that he can feel coursing through his veins with a hearty growl:
Fortitude Save 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
As the snake begins to pump him with venom he looses it, he attacks with everything he has, biting and slashing at the monster, trying to ends its life before it can hurt anyone else!

DM Dan E |
Grall, seemingly unaffected by posion, strikes at the snake with blade and teeth in a frenzy and while he drives the snake back it is just barely fast enough to avoid solid contact from the attacks.
The distraction does however allow Sajan an opportunity to step behind the snake and he punishes it with a series of mighty blows that leaves deep imprints of the sentinel's fist in its body. Very seriously wounded, the snake now seems more interested in flight.
Nuveril wades in, driving the creature back even further with wide swings of her hammer but she is unable to solidly connect.
Round 3
- Arjun
- Khalid
- Snake
- Linah
- Grall
- Sajan
- Nuveril
Arjun and Khalid are up, don't forget the fort save.

Round 3, initiative 18
@DM: Actually i read up on it this morning :) Was waiting for my turn to apply it. Didn't say that i took a healer's kit though. I think only Arjun did.
Linah catches Khalid as he staggers away from the beast. "Here Khalid. Lie down", she says and uses her backpack to try and create a makeshift pillow for the inquisitor. She conjure's water (fluff only, i have no idea how you would treat a poisoned wound) to clean Khalid's wounds and tries desperetly to slow the poison's effects.
Standard action to use the Heal skill to help with Khalid's fort save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
"Arjun, throw me your healer's kit", she calls out.
@DM: I'm going to try and aid the rest of Khalid's saves (2 more i think). Do you want me to roll them at once or post the roll once a round?

I'm tempted to retcon that you have a kit as thats a fail without, pass with, but done is done. Normally I would say make the checks now but hold off for now we will see if Arjun's passes the kit or chucks a bomb before the snakes action.
Usual poison treatments involve tightly wrapping the affected limb and keeping the patient immobile to prevent the posion circulating. Whether that would work for giant black mambas I have no idea :).
DM Dan E |
Arjun's shot is a miss falling short and to the right and splashing Grall with fire. Adjusting with splash weapon mastery will splash either Grall again or Nuveril so assume your going with what you rolled. Reflex save from Grall please, fail is 4 damage, pass is 2.
Snake reflex 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 fail
The snake is splashed with fire and is clearly in dire trouble, ichor and blood dripping everywhere.Direct hit would have finished it!
It withdraws, moving back into the building and you lose sight of it in the darkness.
It is heading straight back into the far corner of a large interior room. It appears to be trying to get as far away as possible.
We will stay in initiative order unless your letting it go.
DM Dan E |
Undeterred by the darkness, Grall runs after the snake, which feebly tries to escape. Grall is in no mood for mercy however and cuts the snake in half with a single mighty sweep of his falchion.

The combat over, you strain your senses in an attempt to hear whether you've been noticed but none of you hear anything but your own deep breaths and Khalid's stifled groans.
Linah please make 3 heal checks, the first normal and the last two with a +2 as we will assume Arjun hands his heal kit over as soon as possible. Khalid please make 3 fort saves, we will adjust based on Linah's rolls.
Assuming Linah will continue to treat Khalid until he makes his save or the poison expires, what are the rest of you doing? The snake body seems rather well concealed where Grall left it.
Edit: Oh and reflex save as above please Grall.

Wow, that is impressive, 6 missed saves...not sure I have ever seen that...
Grall emerges from the darkness panting. He is covered in blood, scales and flesh. You almost believe he bathed in the beast. As Arjun enters the building the scene is nothing less than grizzly. Pieces of the snake lie everywhere. There are even teeth and claw marks on it. It looks like the snake was killed by some wild beast...its takes you a little time to find the glands...
Grall tore it to bits including a number of bite attacks before he could calm down completely. Dan can tell us if the glands made it out alive...sorry
EDIT: Down 12 hit points, used 4 rounds of rage.
DM Dan E |
The group moves into the cover of the mostly intact building with the snake. While Linah and Khalid's magic have closed the inquisitor's wounds, Linah still works feverishly under the soft light of a spell placed on her scimitar to try and stem the poision already in Khalid's bloodstream. Shielding the light as best she can, she bandages his left arm tightly from shoulder to hand and proclaims that there is nothing else to be done at present. Khalid is left mobile, but his face is very pale and he is clearly very weakened.
Sajan meanwhile hides near the entrance in the cover of a partly collapsed roof section, eyes and ears open for danger.
Arjun examines the snake but Grall's rampage and its other battle wounds have left little intact. Extracting the little that is left would take perhaps ten minutes or so.

Just as Linah is finishing up her ministrations, you hear something from outside. It sounds like the flap of large wings moving east to west directly above the building you are in and then, oddly, from the same source, a low growl as if from a dog.
Your slightly closer to the entrance and catch a glimpse of a silhouette, a winged quadraped the rough size of a large horse with pointed somethings perched on its head. It flies past the building but then you lose sight of it.
Aside from the spoilers above. You hear nothing but the beating of your own hearts.
I swear to God I am incapable of rolling anything other than 19s and 20s for Khalid's perception checks. I clearly stole the good rolls from his fort saves.
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
Well I would certainly trade some of his perceptiveness for a decent fort save.
Khalid sits up, hearing something approach...
"No time for rest I'm afraid...cough...It sounds like we have more company."
The inquisitor says, as he struggles to his feet and readies his blade.
Grall |
Sajan returns, urging the group.
The flapping of wings... I spotted some kind of flying horse. I think its hunting us; we should leave, now!
Do you fearrr it Sajan? I say let it come and togetherrr with Sarrrenrrrae's blessing we will dispatch this crrreaturrre as well! says the gore covered Gnoll...you do notice some of Gralls blood flowing freely from a large snake bit on his shoulder...

Ouch, we haven't picked up any potions of restoration by any chance? :) And by the way, can someone quickly explain how con loss works? Maxhp 8 sounds very low by just losing the hp gain from the con modifier.
"Stay down, Khalid. You are in no condition to fight", Linah says and moves to stand beside Grall. "We will deal with whatever comes", the cleric announces and lays her hand on Gralls shoulder to heal some of his wounds.

Sajan returns, urging the group.

Nuveril's eyes narrow. "Horses don't growl. It could be a gnoll with some kind of flying mount. Running across open ground with a flying thing chasing us is a dead fool's mission, especially as it can see us but we can't see it. Keep the snakebit one under cover. We will crouch down and either wait until it leaves ... or draw it down to the ground to find us." Her smile leaves little doubt as to which option she prefers.
EDIT:
For every two points of damage you take to a single ability, apply a -1 penalty to skills and statistics listed with the relevant ability. Constitution: Damage to your Constitution score causes you to take penalties on your Fortitude saving throws. In addition, multiply your total Hit Dice by this penalty and subtract that amount from your current ant total hit points.

Don't forget you can also do a heal check with the kit to try and bandage his wounds. It is a DC 20, but there is no penalty for failure and you could heal me another 5-6 HP if you roll well enough.

Very true although this application of heal takes an hour which you may or may not have......

If it can see in the dark like a Gnoll can, it is a very limited vision; unless it is already upon us, it will not spot us in the night. What do we gain by staying here; we came to scout, not do battle...
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
I've gotten the impression that whatever it is it's heading towards us and could spot us (since Sajan saw it) unless we succeed at a stealth check (which Linah is not likely to make). And Linah doesn't feel that Khalid should run in the state he is. She would rather try and fight whatever it is here, and then we can make it back to the monastary. Unless of course that fight would bring all the gnolls down...
Arjun Srivastava |
"We can retrieve potions to cure his affliction once we return to the monastery. For now, let us deal with whatever is currently stalking toward us." Arjun readies his crossbow and nods for the warriors to lead the party outside.

Sajan sighs in frustration, hammering a massive fist into his palm for emphasis.

Then she turns to Grall and Nuveril. "I fear that should someone come looking the snake will rouse suspicion on what might have done this. Can you do anything to cover our tracks? I do not want the gnolls to be able to track us back to the monastery"
DM Dan E |
Just to confirm I'm waiting for a basic consensus.
Grall can see and hear nothing.
Covering what tracks you've made in town would be difficult and time consuming in the dark. As you move south though the terrain gets harder and tracking would be difficult. The terrain around the monastery is rugged hills with plenty of stony areas and only a master tracker would be able to follow (although obviously your only 1.75 miles away from town).
If your really concerned you could use the river and cut across to a stony point and anti-track the gap but again that would take time in the dark (less for Grall).
Sajan Krama Sumna |
They already suspect we're here or we wouldn't have a flying creature combing the streets for us. Lets just leave swiftly under cover of darkness. Remember darkvision isn't all encompassing, its usually 60 feet and at most is 120.
