I do not know about anyone else, but that statement is unsettling.
And also very wrong.

That just one of the insane quotes that a pastor at my moms church come up with.

Some others are; You should only read the bible with his guidance, to do otherwise you run the risk of missunderstanding God's word and daming your soul.

True faith is blind faith, so don't listen to anything that contradicts your faith.

It does float my boat in a moat and with a goat!
Even the Catholic priesthood has its limits. But NAMGLA? By Jove, man!

That goat loves me! On the sea!

I went and took an excerpt (just under half of the full survey, it seems) from the test and beat the pants off 99% of those surveyed: 15 of 15. It was pretty easy, but then I've given much more than trivial thought to religion.

I got 14 out of 15 but only because I confused the first and second great awakenings. One thing I noticed is that some of the questions were phrased oddly for a telephone poll, such as the question of which was not one of the 10 commandments. If you have a staticy connection, it is very easy to misunderstand a question like that.

Fair enough. ;-)

And yes Urizen I felt that this was worth posting to. If only to let Kirth know I have no hard feelings.:-P

EDIT: Nor am I an ostrich.

When I hear stuff like that all I can say is run fast, very fast.

I have always been taught that bland faith is not faith at all.

Well of course you did! The Mormons and the atheists swept the rankings. You might check out the full 32-question survey -- I managed 30.75 out of 32, with mean scores (3,400 repspondents) averaging closer to 16.

32 out of 32. Not difficult.
However, some of the questions were probably not appropriate for this sort of thing -- both faith-based salvation and transubstantiation are surprisingly sticky, difficult issues to expect such a clear-cut response out of a survey.

Where is the full survey, anywho?

Do you prefer sweet faith or spicy faith?

Ah! Yeah, I cut a deal with my doctor, and we sort of both neglected to tell the specialist.

As long as I'm moderate about it (like 1/day instead of 2 or 3), it's no harm/no foul.

Maybe some readjustment issues going on -- dunno.

Right on. It actually pained me to watch you choke down Near Beer. No man should have to suffer such indignities.

I didn't think so, but look at the scores. Catholics come across as functionally illiterate.

I got hung up on some of the NT ones (i find it very hard to read the bible past the fantastical/crazy elements of the OT), but aside from that it was definitely cake for me.

I thought that they were all very simple questions. Of course if you have ever watched an episode of Jay Walking on the tonight show, yeah I don't have much "faith" in my fellow man.

Reminds me of the time with a job interview that a prospective candidate was wanting to get a job where I worked. He was asked about his familiarity with Windows. He replied he was very familiar with it. When asked about what he knew about it, he replied that he could open then and close them in both houses and cars.

He wasn't joking.

More like ignorant of anything outside of their faith. But, whatever.

That's probably about 25% of your service calls on a daily basis.

I wonder if it would have come out different had the sample sizes been different. I mean it is really easy for Mormons to come out great when the internals show that only 2 Mormons were surveyed. Of course, by the same token two of the tenants of our belief is to gain as much education as possible and to learn about others faiths to be better able to teach others about ours, so that could play into it as well. But again, I find it hard to draw inferences about who knows more about religion when the sample sizes are so lopsided.

houstonderek wrote:

In the specific category of "Bible and Christianity," average Catholic score was 5.4 out of 12, unless the numbers were misrepresented.

The report I'm reading says 215 Mormons.

I am looking at the results listed on pg 65 of the report. Maybe those are supposed to be percentages and I am just confused. Either way, having such a small respondent is likely to skew the results in their favor, the same with the rather small sample of atheists and agnostics.

IIRC, most of the "Bible and Christianity" questions were about things that a Catholic wouldn't need to know anything about, like the Reformation and the Great Awakening. Heck, even core "Catholic" issues like transubstantiation aren't a big deal outside of dedicated theology.

To paraphrase comedian Kathleen Madigan, "I don't read the Bible! I'm Catholic; I pay a guy to do that for me! He doesn't have kids or anything to do all week; he can show up on Sunday with a 45-minute book report."

... and, as has already been pointed out, a big part of what's going on with these numbers is that people who don't care anything about religion, and don't think about it or learn about it, are probably going to self-identify as whatever cultural identity they grew up with -- probably some Catholic or Protestant designation.

I think what we can learn most about this study is that maybe we should try to learn a little bit more about other faiths. That way you won't unintentionally be offensive to someone else. It may go a long way in the end.

Laugh all you like, but that's true of an awful lot of people. Dan Dennett did an interesting study on the numbers of people who became atheists in Seminary school, because the more they studied theology, the less sense any of it made.

I think you misunderstand Nate's laughter. He is also an atheist.

He should probably try this quiz, then.
