Are there dates (years, at least) for the start of each of the Mendevian Crusades?

The pathfinder wiki page for the crusades seems to give a few of them, but not the most recent two.

Thanks very much!

No dates yet. There will be soon, though, as part of the backstory info for "Wrath of the Righteous."

The written rules do not state you have to pay someone for pieces to make armor. They state you need to spend x amount of money equal to 1/3 of the cost of the item to be made.

With that said, a GM can hand you a treasure pile of materials with which to make armor. It has a GP value. That is all you are really asking here. This is not a reduction in material cost. It IS the material cost.

Step 1: Kill an creature.
Step 2: Make the appropriate checks to salvage its hide.
Step 3: GM assigns a value to what you salvaged. This value is what is used in step 4.
Step 4: Make the appropriate checks to turn hide into armor.

Note: for realism I would make it 3 checks. A (heal?) check to skin the beast. A (craft leather) check to turn it into leather. A craft armor to turn the leather into armor.

For simplicity I would make it two checks. Heal check to skin the beast, a craft armor check to turn the skin into armor.

- Gauss

That's a good way to do things. Sort of what I do in my games when it comes up, but I use Survival checks instead of Heal checks, since skinning something seems more like a hunter's trick and less like a doctor's trick...

1: Do classes that stack with Monk for the purpose of Flurry get full BAB during flurry ("the monk's base attack bonus from his monk class levels is equal to his monk level.")? (Unlike the next two, this is for Brother of the Seal and not CoI which is full BAB anyways)

2: Does Champion of Irori's Ki Pool that "levels in this class stack with levels in other classes that grant a ki pool" require the ki pool be "unlocked" to stack (In other words, does Monk 3 not stack for ki)

3: How is the stacking done?
a:(1/2 Monk)+(1/2 CoI)+Wis
b:((Monk+CoI)/2)+Wis (The end result differs if you have an odd level in both)
c: Monk Ki+CoI Ki.

4: Does a Ki Pool have a minimum size of 1?
4b: If no, does it have a minimum size of zero?

1) Yes.

2) Yes.

3) Monk Ki + CoI Ki.

4) Minimum size of zero, since that way you can use that last point.

If you had a quality soapbox and a captive audience, what would you say?

James Jacobs wrote:

Perhaps I should rephrase: "does a 5 wisdom Monk 3 have a Ki pool size of 1, 0 or -2"

The answer for 3 was the one I was least expecting: Does it differ from Ninja (notes ability score is added once) because the rules have different wording (though still make a vs b confusing), or you didn't realize Ninja had Ki stacking rules (I couldn't think of a way to note them without making the question confusing)?

What does an immortal wizard research? Spells probably won't take longer than 1 week/level each, and there're only so many true names that would make a difference for someone so high-level.

Speaking of true names, what other benefit do they provide besides easier binding?

And speaking of binding, how do you get things like the ubiquitous "permanently bound elemental?"

And speaking of bound outsiders, how does an immortal wizard keep them from attacking her when she's in thrashing distance?

Do temporary hit points from multiple spells stack? For instance, can a Wizard cast false life for 13 hp, then have a cleric cast aid for 18 and heroes feast for 12, adding all of those together for a total of 43 temporary hit points? Or would only the highest one take effect?

I want to add something to the above question: as far as I know temporary hit point overlap and don't stack, but there are a few instances where that leave me perplexed, as an example, a wight or vampire energy drain.

To me it it seem logic to have the temporary hit point it gain from using its power stack.

So, there are exceptions to the rule that temporary hit points don't stack but overlap?

Ah! Gotcha. Yah, a monk with a low enough Wisdom can indeed effectively have a negative ki pool. This is similar to how a low mental stat can prevent a spellcaster from casting higher level spells.

Ninja ki stacking rules are unusual and different when compared to monk ki rules.

Hi Jacobs.
I have two questions/concern with S&S:

1) The plunder is 1000 gp. It is suggested to spend 1 point of plunder to pay the crew. How often (is it per week or per month)?

2) It seems that after a few piracy events (Sea Wolves Event 7- Raiders of the Fever Sea), the PC's could end up w/ ~ 7 points of plunder in a 1 week period of pirating. After getting rid of crew payment that equates to 6000 gp!!!!!!! I am concerned that the PC's will get wealthy fast and start buying magical equipment/armor/weapons, etc. Does S&S took this into account? Could this be mitigated?

I'd make the silthilar into an alien race, probably from Castrovel.

Immortal wizards have plenty more to research. New and better spells. Ways to restore youth (if they didn't immortalize while young). Transmuting materials (like lead into gold). Methdos of self improvement (higher stats). Answers to fundamental questions. What is the meaning of life, and all that.

At this point, true names don't provide much more, although we talk about them a bit more, I think, in the Books of the Damned.

"Perfectly bound elementals" are usually the result of a binding spell, or if not that, GM/adventure writing fiat.

Spells. Things like walls of force, magic circles, prismatic spheres, and the like.

If it seems logical to let certain sources of temporary hit points stack, that's fine. When they do stack, we're specific about it in the text; for the most part, I'd not let them stack, though.

Running it incognito would defeat the purpose.

I'll CERTAINLY run some Gamespace games for my own friends... such as my friend who's about to move to the east coast after nearly 20 years!

If I were to run a game for folks from the internets, I'd probably post the campaign's details and call for people who were interested to post a "me!" in the announcement thread. I'd keep that open call open for an hour or something, then close it and randomly pick 6 folks, then run a single session or two or three (a single adventure). Depending on how that went, I might do one again with a different random group.

We'll see how things all work out, though!

A secret society of gunslingers would make more sense in Alkenstar. Carrying guns anywhere else is a great way to NOT remain secret.

Assassin's Creed 3 could well be inspirational for an Arcadia-based campaign... but Andoran is a lot more developed and a lot less gun-filled.

The Sangudaemon's contagious gore DC is 20. In a case like this, you can always use the formula of DC = 10 + 1/2 the creature's HD + the creature's ability score on which the attack is based. In this case: 10 + 6 +4, for DC 20.

And the urdefhans have been a part of my homebrew world for decades. I think I first made them up back in 1989 or thereabouts. So... yeah, I've got a LOT of stuff I could talk about them... too much to unleash here in a messageboard post, alas.

Awesome thank you so much for the quick posting. As for the urdefaden I would love to hear more about them somewhere what little we got on them in horsemen was just not enough and to me they seem to be one of those unique pathfinder races that is begging for some in depth writing on like an ecology of article at least.

Now other question, when I read over them in bestiary 3 and into the darklands the urdefaden seemed to me a lot like the reavers from firefly, these terrifying monsters from the darkness that you hope kill you first rather then let you live, I was wondering if that was a fairly accurate assumption to play off of when designing adventures around them?

Bestiary 1

Whirlwind (Su)
....
Creatures one or more size categories smaller than the whirlwind might take damage when caught in the whirlwind (generally damage equal to the monster's slam attack for a creature of its size) and may be lifted into the air.

Bestiary 2

Whirlwind (Su)
...
A creature that comes in contact with the whirlwind must succeed on a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 the monster’s HD + the monster’s Strength modifier) or take damage as if it were hit by the whirlwind creature’s slam attack. It must also succeed on a second Reflex save or be picked up bodily and held suspended in the powerful winds, automatically taking the indicated damage each round. A creature that can fly is allowed a Ref lex save each round on its turn to escape the whirlwind. The creature still takes damage that round but can leave if the save is successful.
...

So apparently the size limit has been removed. It is an official change?
The PRD is still using the Bestiary 1 version, so I am a bit unsure, and the idea of a horse (to use a large creature with few HD) being "picked up bodily and held suspended in the powerful winds" of a small sized air elemental seem a bit weird.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

As far as I know the size limit wasn't removed. That should be sent to the Bestiary errata thread. Because a Small air elemental shouldn't be able to pick up that horse.

Heya James Jacobs,

I had an idea the other night for a drow worshiper of Nocticula who prefers to worship her in male form, as Our Lord in Shadow. This normally would probably just be personal preference on the worshiper's part, seeing as how Nocticula changes form and gender so easily, but within the society of the dark elves, it could cause quite a stir for those who learn of it.

The cleric in question would likely worship her in such a way due to holding a grudge against the matriarchy. I envisioned a leader of a heresy among the drow who wages a sort of semi-secret, underground, dark crusade against the female nobility. While it may not mean much to the demons, it could be quite a blasphemy among the drow matriarchy.

Would Nocticula allow or sponsor such a heresy, considering the secret shadow war it could cause, and the assassinations, strife, chaos, seduction, conversion, and murder to follow? Or is the whole thing kind of moot, since she changes form and gender so frequently and easily? For example, would the drow in question merely be ridiculed for not knowing his demonic lore? Would such a personal preference be enough to cause a schism in her cult among the drow? With spells like commune and such, the cleric in question could eventually ask Nocticula herself, so that might throw a kink into things.

I just thought it was a kind of neat idea! How would you handle something like this in a campaign?

I don't mean to be a pest, James, but I think you overlooked my latest questions when you answered your last batch.

While James isn't the "rules guy" he knows the rules and is willing to answer questions about them. What bothers me is that people will take his responses as "the Official Paizo response" as a means to end dumb internet arguments. Seriously, who cares if the Monk can't do a million damage while hopping on one foot and then dodge everything in the universe therefore taking no damage?

Mr. James Jacob,

I am trying to figure out if additional bonuses from feats/traits or spells even grant those bonuses on overcoming Spell Resistance of creatures?

Example: Level 3 Wizard casts Magic Missile
He has Varisian Tattoo as a feat so his caster level with Evocations is +4 in total.
Is his caster level check Vs SR 1d20+3 or 1d20+4?

Thank you up in front for answering the question.

I hate it when people say he isn't the rules guy since he did a lot with the Core Rulebook (like bards!). It's better to say that his answers are from the perspective of a GM, not an official Paizo response. That's why I still ask him questions because I trust his judgement as a GM.
