About the Runelords hardcover...

Are you updating it to Pathfinder rules? Revising it? Smoothing out some of the rougher edges? Commissioning some less cartoony art?

Will it be pretty?

I've answered it but I'll do so again! :-)

The Runelords hardcover will indeed be revised to the Pathfinder rules; it'll have some revisions to certain areas that were too tough or too easy, and will have some brand new areas as well. And we'll be replacing a LOT of the art, so it will be very very pretty.

Did you devise the name Golarion based on it being an anagram of organ oil or groan oil? Don't lie and say it came from the name being your iron goal, because I'll just roll my eyes and say go on, liar.

Go in oral. Okay, I'm done.

One more question, is all the duct tape I webbed around my window panes going to help when a hurricane-ushered Sentra flies into my house?

Actually, I believe it was Erik who invented the name "Golarion." I have no insight into how he came up with it.

Duct tape is pretty strong stuff... so maybe!

The Anti magic shell question was a bit unclear as I was thinking about the barbarian being just outside it and trying to sunder it, but as that spell can't be dispelled normally it shouldn't be a problem.

Probably if someone will be taking that ability in my games I will probably allow for a temporary suppression of most spell that can't be dispelled as it will make the power "cool" without, hopefully, being unbalanced.

Ah... no. A barbarian wouldn't be able to sunder an anti magic shell, ESPECIALLY not with a magical attack like that.

James, what would your 'dream team' for this book be, and what would you entitle it?

I actually wouldn't do that book at all, because there's like 3 different books in there that I'd rather do:

Mythos Monsters Revisited (Denizen of Leng, Shoggoth, 8 more)

And two others. I'm not sure what they are, because I'm too distracted by "Mythos Monsters Revisited."

Nope; natural attacks are different than unarmed strikes, and as such simply having natural attacks does not allow you to skip the Improved Unarmed Strike requirement for that chain of feats.

Also, natural attacks do not gain additional attacks from a high Base Attack Bonus; if a monster has 2 claw attacks, that is indeed all it gets. A level 20 fighter who has only 2 claw attacks would only get those two claw attacks; he should really look into getting a wielded weapon.

Alright, then what about a Ranger with Natural Attack Combat Style from the APG? Does he then only get his base natural attacks and none based on his attack bonus? Kinda seems to me that unless the Ranger can break the rule above somehow, the Natural Combat Style Ranger is subpar if he has to pick up a weapon to get his full attack bonus, kinda defeats the purpose... Or would Improved Natural Attack count as Improved Unarmed Strike for the feats (But even then, what about the other attacks a ranger with a manufactured weapon would get)?

A ranger with the natural attack combat style does not gain extra attacks. That said, that combat style isn't really meant for PCs... it's meant more for NPC races that have a lot of natural attacks. Not all options are meant to be for PCs first.

Arnold Tsang is a cool artist, but his style, like Jeff Laubenstein and a few others we used in the first few Pathfinders, just doesn't match our house style. (They also drew a LOT of criticism from the bulk of our readers, who prefer more naturalistic painterly styles.)

The art direction will look a lot more like our recent books, in any case, than it will the first ones.

If someone were to attempt to scale back the availability of said items, how would you think might be the simplest way to prepare PCs to fight special monsters, like incorporeals?

My take is that it's a tempest in a tea pot; something a lot of GMs get worked up about for no real reason. That said, I'm glad we took the chance with Pathfinder to consolidate the stat boosting items into 2 slots, but only because that lets NPCs and PCs have some more interesting magic items as gloves, cloaks, and whatnot.

When I GM, I tend to generally introduce magic items into the game gradually... +1 weapons get introduced pretty soon, but it's usually 3 or 4 levels before +2 and then 3 or 4 more before +3 and so on.

If you want to scale back the magic weapons, you as the GM need to realize that some monsters suddenly become a lot tougher. The gargoyle, at CR 4, expects at least a few magic weapons in a group, and it's a much tougher foe if there aren't any. This goes even more for incorporeal creatures.

Reducing magic weapons in the game works... but the GM needs to do so intelligently. Save the incorporeal monsters for rare encounters, or make sure to provide the PCs with special weapons or circumstances or environmental advantages or story advantages or whatever against those things if you aren't giving out magic weapons. Oh! And make DANG sure that before you run a game like that your players know what you're planning on doing. Not all players (very few, alas, in my experience) are interested in playing in low-magic games.

You're reading a bit much into the opening scenes, actually. It's interesting though! What's probably happening is that after working on adventures for nearly a decade, I've developed a sort of "style" or "look" to adventures I write and develop, so that you'll see lots of similar themes in them if you study them closely. Sometimes it's intentional, but often it's just the way I do things.

I'd like to say that the art in Ultimate Combat was some of the best art I've seen in RPG books. I especially liked the rogue with the mask and the spellslinger.

So I was reading about Numeria, and it says there are 7 "skymetals" they got from the crashed spaceship, the most common of which is Adamantine... so what are the other six? Are they created yet, or up to GMs to create for rare special items?

They're all created. I think the first time they were mentioned was probably in Children of the Void. The skymetals are all detailed here on the Pathfinder Wiki.

I have a vague recollection of reading something about noqual recently, but can't recall where it was. Otherwise, I'm not aware of much else having been said officially about the other five skymetals. The Pathfinder Wiki notes a PFS scenario as a source for abysium though.

How do you manage writers block?

Partially, the schedule helps me manage my focus; whatever's the most important book, or whatever's the most behind schedule, or however all that balances out is what determines what I work on at any given time. I also try to multitask as well, and at times, I don't need to complete a task in order to give the next person down the line (such as an editor or art director) a chunk of material to work on as well.

It's not really a question of which one I feel inspired to work on, though; it's more of a "Now I need to work on this, so here goes!" Writer's block isn't usually much of a problem; deadlines can be remarkable muses. That said... I often go talk to other folks at the office to get inspiration; it really helps to have everyone on site to help inspire each other (which is one of the main reasons we don't do telecommuting for developers, designers, and editors).

What other books? ;)

1)Will we get a list of the monsters in the Beastairy 3?

2)What kind of previews will we get for the beastairy 3? art? when?

3)I am correct in thinking that Golarion is the same size as the earth? It only has one moon right?

4)I read somewhere that 3 of the sky metals have been statted-up but I only know of two, adamantine and that one in the dungeons of golarion. So what and where is the third one?

5)So do the Imperial dragons have age categories like all "true" dragons? what are there alignment(s)?

6)How about a book for modern play, not a d20 modern, just a book that has info for playing pathfinder classes in the "real" world? Like if they got transported to earth.

7)Do you have any favorite comic book characters from DC? Marvel? Darkhorse? other?

8)Worst movie you have seen? TV show? Cartoon?

10)What is the strangest mythological creature you would stat up for pathfinder? Is there any creature from myth you would never want stats for?

1) I suspect our list of monsters from Bestiary 3 will be published closer to the book's release date at the end of the year.

2) See above; not sure what sort of previews we'll be doing but they're still months and months away.

3) Yes; Golarion's the same size as earth and has one moon.

4) The third skymetal we statted up was noqual, back in Pathfinder #14, where we first listed the names and properties (but not rules) for all seven skymetals.

5) Imperial dragons have age categories. Their alignments are LG, CG, N, LE, CE.

6) A "Pathfinder Modern" rulesbook isn't something we have the resources to do right now, since any new set of rules that assumes a different baseline world would need to be fully supported by us as well with adventure paths and all that—for now, we're sticking with Pathfinder and Golarion.

7) Death, from Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics.

8) Worst movie: the Roland Emerich late 90's remake of "Godzilla." Worst TV Show: Not sure, but my current least favorite is "Glee." Worst cartoon: Scooby Doo.

9) Favorite Pixar movie is "Wall-E" (but that's likely to change once "John Carter" comes out). Favorite old school animated Disney movie is also one of the LAST ones they animated in that way: "Lilo and Stitch."

10) There are quite a few creatrues from myth that I'd not want to stat up, either because they're just plain silly (jackalope or hoop snake) or because they're X-rated... more so than a succubus, in fact.

Yeah, just don't have REAL photos... I think that was a large part of what made Wizards go WTF and revoke the d20 license for it. Overall I think they did a good job, just... the pictures...

As for what I asked about the skymetals.... Cool... So, you totally should stat up them all and list them in an upcoming campaign setting book! :) Like a book of artifacts or something. Could even be a "companion" book 32 pages. :)

In the meantime, since Noqual weighs half as much, would weapons created with them be easier to use, for example, would a Noqual scimitar count as a light weapon?

Are Golarion Giants 'natives' like humans and dwarves, or 'visitors' like elves and gnomes?

On the one hand, Lost Empires sounds like something that the game wouldn't need much more than sub-domains for Aroden, but, on the other hand, I like that sort of thing (like many people, being fascinated by anything I'm told I can't have) and am interested in hearing more about the Jistka Imperium, Tekritanan League, and, especially, the Shory and Lirgen.

I think that the sorcerer, now that she has a bloodline, stacks up quite well next to other classes. I wouldn't change the sorcerer at all.

I use "vanilla" classes. One of the advantages of being creative director of an RPG company is that you more or less get to guide the game so that it's exactly the one you want to use when you play the game.

Real photos in any RPG product are a turn-off for me. And I'm not sure that it was the use of real photos that caused a problem for WotC as much as it was the creator of the book using his position as Brand Manager as a marketing point for the book—basically, the fact that he used his status in Company A to promote his own work for Company B (a company he owned and that was a competitor) was kind of sketchy. And since he did so, it was VERY easy for folks to mis-read what he was saying and assume that "The Book of Erotic Fantasy" was an official WotC product, and thus the scandal bloomed from there. It wasn't the fact that there were photos—the book could have had no art at all and I suspect the reaction would have been the same.

We've got plans for getting more sky metal info out there by this time next year.

In the meantime, the lighter weight of noqual doesn't affect how much easier a weapon is to wield—whether a weapon is light or one-handed or two-handed depends as much on size as it does on weight.

Golarion's giants are mostly natives, I believe.

Lost Empires will indeed have rules elements. I'm looking at a combination between "Dungeons of Golarion" and "Lost Cities of Golarion" for the book—each of the six chapters will be about 1/3 new rules content.

9)When will we see a book about Numeria? A guide to the "Oceans of Golarion"? A book of "Artifacts of Golarion"?

10)Are there any monsters from movies or tv shows that could be used legally for pathfinder? How long does something have to be around for it to be considered public domain?

1) Just start looking into Japanese mythology. You won't need to dig far.

2) The strangest creature from myth that will have stats in Pathfinder would be a different creature for each and every person—one person's "strange" is another's "normal." Sorry if that feels like a cop-out... but having just developed 300 or so monsters for Bestiary 3, many of which are from mythology (and thus there's a VERY good chance my nomination would be among those monsters), and not wanting to spoil many monsters from Bestiary 3 yet, I can't really answer this question. Ask again in 5 months.

3) Haven't seen either. The fact that both are mostly only being shown in 3D is a huge turn-off and a no-go for me, since 3D movies give me a headache and work poorly with my glasses. If they go away from 3D theaters before they leave theaters entirely, I'll see them. I want to see "Fright Night" more than "Conan," because "Fright Night" is getting better reviews and I fear that "Conan" will just annoy me since I'm a much bigger Conan fan than a Fright Night fan. I'll probably wait to catch both on DVD/Blu-Ray.

4) After consulting with my "Vampire Hunter D" source (Wes Schneider), I can confirm it was the 2nd one I saw.

5) Japanese myth: oni. Greek myth: hydra. Norse myth: kraken. Celtic myth: wild hunt.

6) Worst Movie Ending: "The Ninth Gate"; Worst TV series ending: "The X Files" or "Seinfeld."

7) Maybe.

8) Nope; it's resistance because that's the baseline bonus to saves. Making it something else makes it too powerful. And by limiting its damage type to the two types of monsters that are almost ALWAYS made by magical transformations, we don't have to say something like "The GM gets to decide which monster it works on."

9) Probably about 6 to 9 months after we announce them, if we ever will.

10) Public domain is a really tricky subject, mostly because Disney forced some complex changes and tweaks to the way it works. There are a few TV shows and movies that are already in the public domain due to various errors in the way the movie's release was handled (Night of the Living Dead, for example) and many other "orphan works" and stuff like that. It's actually FANTASTICALLY complicated.

1)What monsters would you like to see from movies and tv shows, if copy rights weren't an issue, statted up for pathfinder?

2)Favorite food? favorite drink? favorite resturaunt?

3)Most casualties as a DM? Most times you have died in a campaign?

4)Favorite type of sword? favorite non-sword old school weapon? as a player and in real life.

5)For the Paizo blogs is there any pattern to what is posted based on what day of the week it is?

6)I was reading the guide to the darkmoon vale and am wondering if the Keld Piskies have been statted up in any books currently or in the near future?

7)When will the frosty chiselers and cold riders be updated to pathfinder?

8)Are there any artifacts that come from the first world?

9)Why are there spells that use positive energy from the first world instead of the positive energy plane? is there a strong connection to the first world and the positive energy plane?

10)Will we ever see evolutions for summoner's eidolons that grant immunity to things like poison, disease, energy drain, petrification, etc. or ones that make them more magicaly declined at the cost of str and con?

Any chance that it will include something similar to the low-level/medium-level/high-level adventure idea sections in Lost Cities of Golarion?

I have no idea how popular they were, but they were a significant part of what makes that book one of my top three campaign chronicles of all time.

I hear you kinda on the glasses part, although my glasses aren't so big it's a huge problem just a minor annoyance. Although, honestly I have yet to see a movie that was done in 3D that's worth the extra cost (except maybe Avatar... the depth with the big open areas was pretty cool)... Like the new Pirates? Oh a sword stuck in a wall sticks out of the screen. Big whoop... There were many scenes that were not done in 3D that would have been awesome.. like when Blackbeard's ship is spouting the fire, how about having that fire go out over you? Of course, such a scene would then be really screwed up if it wasn't done in 3D... so... guess that's why they can't do it... at least until they come up with a 3D technology where you don't need the glasses or a special TV.

But, does your theater not have 2D versions? My theater always has two theaters showing 3D movies, 1 that is 2D and one is 3D.

1) That list is far too big for me to create here. All of the cool ones, though.

2) Favorite food = abalone. Favorite drink = anything with raspberry in it. Favorite restaurant = Palace Kitchen in downtown Seattle.

3) Most casualties as a GM = the entire party. I've had a few TPKs—4 to 6 players. The most times a character's died in a campaign is in Jason Bulmahn's Eberron game; I went through 4 or 5 characters in that one.

4) Favorite sword = scimitar or katana. Favorite non-sword old-school weapon = bow.

5) Normally, we do try to keep the same type of blogs to the same days, but that schedule goes away during convention season.

No... the low-level/mid-level/high-level sections in Lost Cities took up too much room that could have been devoted to detailing more about the locations. I'd rather give more info about the lost empires that would allow GMs to build their own adventures from that info themselves.

With the exception of Avatar, yeah... 3D has not yet enhanced my enjoyment of a movie. And frankly, the 3D was so distracting for me that the first half hour of Avatar I was having trouble following the story... even though the story's pretty simple.

The problem with 3D is that it's treated as a gimmick... and one that actively reduces the beauty of most movies as it does it because the glasses make the picture dimmer. I'm hoping that some day the current craze for 3D will go away... and since movies that release in 2D and 3D tend to be making as much or more money with the 2D screenings, it seems, there's a pretty good chance of that.

For Conan, there's one local theater that was doing a 2D screening in the middle of the day, but said theater is a multiplex and I'm wary that they actually bother to send up someone who knows what they're doing regarding switching lenses and the like between the 2D and 3D screenings. Also... the fact that Conan's getting terrible reviews and I love the stories means I'm very hesitant to expose myself to something that's just going to annoy me anyway.

6) Nope. Not yet that I know of.

7) One of them, probably never. The other, in a few months.

8) Yes.

9) The first world is very infused with positive energy... but I'm curious to what spells you're talking about.

10) Maybe. New evolutions for summoners aren't high on my to-do list though; the class is already quite customizable as it is. Too customizable, in my opinion.

I expect that will broaden it's appeal, even if it is slightly disappointing to me.

(Posts in this thread dont have to be questions do they?)

Shadow Lodge

now that i've finally caught up with this post after 2 weeks (i feel like i've run a marathon) here's some random questions:

1) in Golarion did birds evolve from dinosaurs? and if so does that mean that both the tengu and stryx are technically dinosaur pc races?

2) why isn't there a single stryx avatar?

3) are there any locations other than Cheliax with colonies of stryx? I created a forest colony in the river kingdoms for my Kingmaker character but i was wondering if there were any others in the canon.

4) what is the difference between the goals of Groetus and Rovagug? Seems to me they both want to destroy reality.

5) do you know why Paizo seems to be keeping silent on the reported issues with Ultimate Combat (missing feats, confusing wording, etc.)? It seems like you guys are pretty good at responding to questions and issues in the errata threads for most of the other books, but i dont remember seeing a single official comment for any of the questions in the Ultimate Combat errata thread.

6) if a living creature visits the positive energy plane are they effectively immortal? since positive energy heals it seems like you would constantly be at full hp...

7) you've stated elsewhere that you have no intentions of doing anymore AP hardcovers like the updated RotRL...would it be possible to reissue pfrpg-updated individual softcover APs for the pre-pfrpg ones? I'm thinking especially Second Darkness since you've stated multiple times how you wished you'd done certain elements of it differently.

i know others have said it but i'd like to say thank you James for taking the time to answer all of our questions (even if you are getting paid for it hehe)...i think it's cool that a company can make it a priority to be so engaged with its customers and fans.

Sweet! Thanks for taking time to answer our questions, as well!

Ooh, that fits very well with my fanwank that the First World is the polar opposite of the Plane of Shadow (one a plane that is a pale, muted and dissipated / faded 'shadow' of the material world, the other a brighter, more energetic and more colorful place of extremes).
