-Nope (although it will probably wind up there eventually rather than rewriting the entire thing) It was in response to your statement that players running scent as auto detect weren't reading the rules carefully enough. The cliffnotes version, as i'm reading it is that

A creature with scent can detect the presence (but not the location) of a creature within range, automatically as a non action (because there are no rolls, checks or listed actions for doing this)

A creature with scent can spend a move action to note the general direction of something who's presence it has detected.

A creature with scent ability who comes within 5 feet of something that can be smelled automatically knows what square its in.

Not James, but he already answered this here (an answer you refer to)

Can detect doesn't mean does detect.

Besides, wouldn't it be a perception roll? Even if it's unspoken detecting things in this manner is the sort of thing perception does. It can be used opposed without taking an action (as it sets the stealth DC. It doesn't seem to say anything about it being automatic in the language. Even lacking an "action" for detection (which vision does, too, as I recall)

Basically, you've got someone behind a large tree or pillar with total cover under the effects of a silence spell. Normally that'd be pretty undetectable, so no perception check. Scent gives something a chance to roll it, though.

Yes, i'm aware of that post. Its what i was replying to. I'm objecting to the characterization of not having read the ability carefully or reading into it, spelling out my reasoning for my conclusions, and waiting to see exactly what the ability IS supposed to do.

Quote:

Can detect doesn't mean does detect.

Baring the listing of a roll of some sort that's VERY unclear. The rules frequently say that you can or may do something and mean you can do so automatically (especially in the absence of a request for a roll)

Examples: Extra Rage

You can use your rage ability more than normal.

Sudden Shift (Sp): In the blink of an eye, you can appear somewhere else. As an immediate action, after you are missed by a melee attack, you can teleport up to 10 feet to a space that you can see. This space must be inside the reach of the creature that attacked you. You can use this power a number of times each day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

You can run for a number of rounds equal to your constitution score

You can stop concentrating on a spell as a free action.

Many Forms (Su): As a standard action, you can assume the form of a Small or Medium humanoid, as the alter self spell.

As a standard action, you can assume gaseous form (as the spell).

Total DefenseYou can defend yourself as a standard action

Fight OnYou can keep fighting even after you should be dead. ... Prerequisites: Con 13; dwarf, half-orc, or orc. ... Benefit: Once per day, you can gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your Constitution modifier

If its the sort of thing that perception already does (and it is) why would it be listed as a special ability? Also note that scent is largely unchanged from 3.5

Right, so if you already don't need an action to detect something then what is it saying that scent grants you?

The large tree or pillar enable the stealth check in the first place: they or something like them are required for the perception roll to take place at all (otherwise its just "Hey! There he is!") they don't provide bonuses or stop someone from seeing them visually.

Hi James, do you think there could be a concerted effort at Paizo to expand the Avatar selection with relevant new entries when (or close to) an AP or module releases? For example, it is a real pity that the glorious new Ameiko (and the other important NPCs) for Jade Regent aren't available for selection. At least last I checked.

I don't personally do it much, but many GMs go out of their way to create multiple aliases with appropriate avatars when they run their pbps. I always appreciate it, especially when I know that it is the "right" image. It must be my lawful tendencies, but it brings peace to me.

4)What are your top ten 80's movies?

5)Do you watch southpark? if so there is a 3 parter that had cuthulu in it. also the one that spoofs the "heavy metal" movie was awesome.

6)Have you seen the "Underworld" movies? will see the new one coming out this january?

7)any chance of seeing cat sidhe, cu sidhe, fir bolg, puca, or leanan sidhe?

8)Have ever seen the old Sinbad the sailor movies? wich one was your favorite?

9)Will ever see a creature that it's treasure is a part of it? examples:1) a golem made of gold(or other treasure),2)a giant snail like creature with a shell made of gold,3)a giant oyster with a giant pearl,4)a bee like creatues that produce magical honey with healing and/or curative properties.

1) No, because magical beasts aren't natural and because they're too powerful for a full spellcaster class to have as a companion.

2) I love Monty Python, but it never aired on one of the 3 TV channels I had access to growing up, so I didn't start seeing it until college.

3) Yes. In fact, the jyoti from Bestiary 2 are from there.

4) In no particular order: The Thing, Ran, Aliens, Das Boot, The Fly, Big Trouble in Little China, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Re-Animator, Hellraiser, The Road Warrior.

5) I know about the Cthulhu episode of South Park but haven't seen it. I just saw the Heavy Metal one a few weeks ago; very funny! I normally don't watch South Park though, but it certainly is amusing.

6) I've seen all of them and liked the first two a lot. I do indeed know about the one coming in January but wish it wasn't 3D. I'm very much looking forward to it. Kate Beckinsale!!!!!! (swoon)

7) Eventually, I think so. Perhaps not with those spellings though.

8) "The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" is not only my favorite Sinbad movie, it's one of my favorite movies ever. It's arguably my FAVORITE fantasy genre movie. I named Golarion's 2nd lich after the bad guy in that movie after all.

Also, one of Herzog's latest movies, "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?" goes right back to the section of river where he filmed some of Aguirre, apparently. Good times!

Was there a question in it though?

In any case, even using scent to pinpoint a square a stealthed creature is in still means that you've got a 50% miss chance if you can't see it with your Perception check.

Of course... I'm also one of those who thinks that the Stealth rules work fine as is—I've never had a problem with them in any of the games I play in or run. Tempest in a teapot, that.

That's a question for Gary and the web team.

And in fact, I might ask him right now to get that Ameiko head as a custom avatar, now that I think of it. Cause I like abusing my power that way! Mwa ha ha.

That would, of course, leave the other picture of Ameiko from the interior available some day as an avatar for PBP games.

EDIT: Although someone already grabbed her name as an alias, so I guess I'm out of luck.

What is the movie "Ran" about?

Love "Big trouble in little china", "Aliens", "the Thing", and Raiders.

Also think "the 7th voyage of Sinbad" is the best one.

Any particular reason why you would have to use a different spelling for those creatures?

What do you like better "Gremlins", "Critters", or "Ghoulies"?

Ran is Akira Kurosawa's retelling of King Lear (among other legends and stories) as a samurai movie. It's incredible.

And because we sometimes change the spelling for mythological monsters so that the words are in something closer to English.

And of those three, I liked Critters best and Ghoulies worst.

Why is it so damned hot?!

Did you laugh at the little panicky humans after the 5.8 earthquake in Virginia? Widdle panicky humans running in circles?

The Red Mantis Assassins don't kill kings/queens. The Watcher-Lord is in charge(seems to be a ruler), but is not called a "king". Would he fall under the no-kill clause of the assassins?

Because summer hates humans.

And nah... earthquakes are no fun. Growing up in California just up the hill from the San Andreas Fault more or less learns you a healthy respect for earthquakes. Although I did laugh at that picture that's making the rounds on the internet about a lawn chair being knocked over by that earthquake, I must admit.

I did a search for this, but the thread I found wasn't very conclusive (IMO) and had no dev input and was over a year old.

When you polymorph or wildshape, does your type change for the purposes of Bane weapons, racial bonuses vs enemies and spells that can only be cast on Animals?

I was mostly wondering if I could cast anthropomorphize animal on myself as a wildshaped druid.

If it doesn't, it would be confusing for players with racial bonuses vs creature types I think.

Your type does not change when you change shape. When a ranger hits a favored enemy that's not what he thinks it is, that's an in-game clue that there's something tricky going on.

Nah. I'm just a member of a goth group and holy hell greater than 85% of them think they're vampires. I'm there for the goth/dieselpunk/maker goodness and I'm having to preface all of my interactions with "no I'm not a vampire".

Question.

I have a shortage of good roleplayers. The group I have now all goof off, leave in the middle, and don't get serious until I break out the "rocks fall you die". It can be like herding cats and pulling teeth at the same time.

I want to run Carrion Crown like nobody's business but I know from experience that bad roleplayers can ruin a good story in 5 seconds flat.

I have one good roleplayer and I'm willing to throw in a DMPC to act as backup. Can Carrion Crown be run with two PCs?

I was thinking fast XP track to make up for the lack of other characters. Would survival chances be non-zero if I started them at level 2 as well?

Alas... it sounds like you need a brand new group, with the exception of that roleplayer.

Running ANY AP with 1 or 2 PCs is tricky, but it can be done. It requires a lot of work to adjust things, though. Fast XP isn't necessary, since even if you use slow XP, not dividing up XP among 4+ players means the character or two will shoot up in level super fast.

I saw this and wanted to post my experience: I do play in one AP that features only two PCs. We're playing Second Darkness (around the 4th part at this point). We have a simple rule by which we play the campaign: none of the encounters get reduced or made easier, but our characters are always 2 levels higher than the recommended level at that point in the story.

This gives us enough of an edge and power level to compete even with the reduced action economy, but fights tend to be intense and often to the bone.

(By the way - should somebody be interested in the builds: I play a highly defensive barbarian; essentially reducing damage to instead get high saves and AC by selecting rage powers and feats that promote survivability. My buddy plays a bard with emphasis on ranged combat.)

A few of my friends will do APs with only two players by using gestalt. It's a little trickier, and the players are still on the harder end of things, but it can be done.

They added a lot of tweaks from experience, though. Very very high point buy, a bonus feat at 1st, and one down the line. I can see if I can get one of them to bring their specifics here.

We are playing CotCT one-on-one and running it by the book.

I am playing two gestalt characters (wizard/cleric and ranger/bard) with good stats and a pseudodragon ally.

We talked about power and they might get a template at level 7/8 (half-celestial).

That's part of the Goth scene, pretty much independent of roleplaying games or larps. Actually come to think of it, it's the sort of thing that's come up every now and then for the last 400 years or so. Including an infamous countess who bathed in the blood of virgins because she thought it would give her eternal youth.

All four of the elemental styles key off Elemental Fist, which is (Su) as far as I could tell, so I say they should be (Su) abilities.

If a creature has Natural Attacks (specifically a claw attack, but potentially any... if rules are different for various attacks, please explain differences if you can), does it count as having Improved Unarmed Strike for other feat prerequisites, or does the creature have to 'waste' a feat on a redundant ability?

Also, am I reading correctly that if a creature has no weapons, but two claws they get two attacks but that's it? A level 20 fighter would not get his 4 normal attacks if he doesn't have a weapon besides his claws?

Most of these are Jason/Design Team questions, frankly. Sorry if there's been no responses yet.

But launching fire and all that is obviously supernatural, so those Djinni and Efreeti stances are supernatural abilities.

A spell that can't normally be dispelled or can only be "dispelled by specific spells probably shouldn't be something the spell sunder power could remove.

And ALL Supernatural abilities don't work in anti magic. If a barbarian tried to use a supernatural ability in anti magic, it simply would not work.

Seeing as how today's the first day in well over a month that I don't need to head into work on a Saturday... yes, they're keeping me busy. And that's mostly just because I dodged the PAX bullet.

But no, I don't take a backseat role. I've got to hit the ground running on Monday developing two Dragon Empires books, working on the Runelords Hardcover, and outlining and assigning some other books and doing some art orders as well, and I also have to start outlining the Shattered Star Adventure Path.

"Inner Sea Magic" is getting a great reception... I suspect we'll do more books along those lines, but I have no idea yet what those books might end up being.

Merisiel's still around... her question thread just kind of got eaten by time. If someone bumps the thread by asking another question she might notice. But not for a few hours, since now I'm going out to see a movie and get some lunch with Rob and Wes to celebrate us getting a weekend back!

All four of the elemental styles key off Elemental Fist, which is (Su) as far as I could tell, so I say they should be (Su) abilities.

The Djinni and Efreeti stances and follow up feat have me a bit perplexed.
They are Exceptional abilities or Supernatural? Launching a cone of fire from your hands, for me, fall in the supernatural camp, but usually the feats give exceptional powers.
Do you know what they were intended to be?

Another thing that leave me a bit perplexed is the Spell sunder power of the barbarian.
It work against spells that can't be dispelled?
The suppress part don't have any problem, but when he get a success 10+ above what needed the barbarian dispel the spell. What if it is a spell that can't be normally dispelled or can be dispelled only by Mage's Disjunction?

As the power is Su, what will happen when he try to use it against a Anti Magic Shell?

I have already posted these questions in the rule forum but no comment so far.

Thanks to both of you.

The Anti magic shell question was a bit unclear as I was thinking about the barbarian being just outside it and trying to sunder it, but as that spell can't be dispelled normally it shouldn't be a problem.

Probably if someone will be taking that ability in my games I will probably allow for a temporary suppression of most spell that can't be dispelled as it will make the power "cool" without, hopefully, being unbalanced.

You ever play Battletech? I managed to avoid it for lo these 20 years, and I just now picked it up.

Ever had a game like that, a sleeper?

I love it, but the introduction of the clans unbalanced it.

If possible stick to the official mechs and don't use the clans. In my experience it is much more satisfying that way.

No, no. What we really need to know is, what is the second oldest profession on Golarion?

James, what would your 'dream team' for this book be, and what would you entitle it?

If a creature has Natural Attacks (specifically a claw attack, but potentially any... if rules are different for various attacks, please explain differences if you can), does it count as having Improved Unarmed Strike for other feat prerequisites, or does the creature have to 'waste' a feat on a redundant ability?

Also, am I reading correctly that if a creature has no weapons, but two claws they get two attacks but that's it? A level 20 fighter would not get his 4 normal attacks if he doesn't have a weapon besides his claws?

Nope; natural attacks are different than unarmed strikes, and as such simply having natural attacks does not allow you to skip the Improved Unarmed Strike requirement for that chain of feats.

Also, natural attacks do not gain additional attacks from a high Base Attack Bonus; if a monster has 2 claw attacks, that is indeed all it gets. A level 20 fighter who has only 2 claw attacks would only get those two claw attacks; he should really look into getting a wielded weapon.
