Hi James

Sorry to be a bother if you've answered this earlier in the thread but I bought the Imperial edition of Owlcat's Kingmaker CRPG and so far they're stonewalling the community as to progress with the bonus tabletop module and I was wondering if you could give any information in that regard for me to pass on to the community?
I only ask because it's been over 8 months and Owlcat have given us no news whatsoever.
Regards Ronin.

I'm not in a position where I can talk publicly about it. Revealing information on that topic is above my pay grade. Sorry.

So in second edition, is the hand of the inheritor no longer Iomedae’s Herald, and is it still part of the setting?

This question was sparked by an earlier one, but have you tried Xcrawl, and did you like it?

Hello James,

What is your favorite thing about tabletop gaming, and does that manifest more as a player for you, or as a game master?

Dark Archive

Hey James, I hope you've been well and had a good PaizoCon experience.
As for questions:
1) Can demons be affected by blightburn?
2) Is it possible to sail from the Inner Sea to Tian Xia by sailing north?
3) Is it possible to buy yourself into good standing with the churches of Asmodeus, Norgorber, Urgathoa or Zon-Kuthon?
4) Final question what would happen, if anything, if one where to mix the heartsilver of a philosopher's stone and sun orchid elixir?

It's sharing the task of creating a story with friends; works for players and GMs alike.

In the future please limit it to one question per post; they're easier for me to manage that way.

1) It's a disease, so it depends if the demon in question is immune to diseases.

2) No.

3) Maybe, but only if you end up going evil in the end.

4) They'd probably ruin each other.

Hi James,

Does the Arcanamirium school's name have any real meaning? I can guess what "arcana" is, but the meaning of "mirium" escapes me.

It does not. It just sounds magic-school-flavored is all.

I want to create an NPC like Rene Belloq from Raiders of the Lost Ark: an amoral scholar/relic-hunter who's just in it for the glory and the money and will work for anyone. Is there an institution of higher learning in the Inner Sea that such a character might thematically hail from/be on staff at?

The Aspis Consortium was initially inspired by Belloq and it grew from there. As such it's perfect for him.

I have 2 very important questions.
Can you get mummy rot from consensual intimate contact with a mummy, and if yes, can the mummy choose not to inflict mummy rot during this interaction?

Asking for a friend.

How did Runelords know about Earthfall in advance?

Like I'm under impression that Aboleth's doomsday glyph magic doesn't actually take years to work(I'm under impression that BBEG of second darkness uses same method and in one of previous book had smaller scale test launch before trying out the real deal), so did Runelords have spies among aboleth or just some sort of powerful divination/prophecy magic that was like "Something bad is gonna happen this specific year"?

As you are Paizo's elfspert, I have a question regarding drow:

Were a drow destined for PC'hood to decide to abandon her culture's ruthless, social-Darwinist ways, what's the deity that would most likely attract her curiosity besides Sarenrae? Desna?

Various methods, but Karzoug using the Cyphergate as a "time window" was the main way.

Depends entirely on the drow PC's personality, alignment, interests, and the like. Any deity could work.

Talking about Godzilla, what classic Toho kaijus would you like to see in the Legendary Monster cinematic universe?

Hi, James!

I have a follow-up question about you "Prodigy of Death" game at PaizoCon...

Spoiler:
What was the deal with those frogs?! They were SUPER creepy!

I have waited nearly a year for Pathfinder Second Edition. It frustrates me that I have to waited another month to actually see it gets published. I cannot play Pathfinder First Edition any longer because after seeing Second Edition the old edition looks obsolete and uninteresting. What should I do in the meanwhile? How should I endure the long wait? Tell me how!:)

Would it be okay for me, as a person who's never seen a Godzilla movie, to see the recent one on its own, or should I watch the previous movies in th series first for the full context?

All of them eventually, but my top 5 would be, in order:

3: Baragon

5: Destroyah

Spoiler:
The growing presence of the Mortician God's influence over a region causes predators to get more aggressive and to start offering up their kills in creepy ways, such as by offering slain prey in patterns on the floor rather than eating them. This applies to ALL predators, not just apex ones, and frogs are predators, so they got weird as a result.

Maybe play a little Starfinder? Or the Adventue Card Game? Or Call of Cthulhu? Or D&D? Or Magic: the Gathering? Or the Pathfinder computer game? Or just take the time to read some of those 1st edition products you mentioned you were frustrated that you didn't have time to catch up on?

OR... Maybe take a month to relax, rest, and recover from the stress that Pathfinder seems to be giving you? Having just come back from a week-long vacation where I did pretty much NOTHING Pathfinder-involved, it's nice to step away from your favorite hobby now and then before it becomes your least favorite hobby.

Yes.

You won't get the thrill of nostalgia at seeing old favorites reimagined, or get weepy eyed at hearing old music cues and themes pop up, or be able to play fun games of "spot the Easter Egg," and as such the movie's flaws (which are primarily it's cookie-cutter characters and convenient plot developments) will be more annoying since you won't have as much pre-established joy to cling to... but there's nothing in this movie that makes it inaccessible if you've never seen another Godzilla movie.

Of course, if you've never seen a Godzilla movie, you don't know if you like or enjoy Godzilla movies, so who knows if you'll enjoy this one? No one until you try.

Does that mean, after finding out Thassilon will fall, Karzoug gladly told other runelords about it so that they can prepare their own emergency plan? Seems like he was quite generous and nice after all.

The mummy is neither cursed nor diseased, and as such casting remove curse or remove disease wouldn't have an effect. Neither of these spells have that same sort of effect that neutralize poison does on venomous creatures—if they did, they'd specifically include that text in the spell descriptions, as is the case for neutralize poison.

It doesn't mean that at all. It just means that the other runelords were very smart, had lots of spies, and/or had their own methods of learning the same information. Once something is learned, it's increasingly easy for others to learn about a thing. Knowledge is contagious.

It has been stated that Gorum was forged in the first great battle between orcs and men. So I thought Gorum didn't exist before the war between orcs and humans began. But Inner Sea Gods said that Torag and Gorum forged an unbreakable prison in the heart of Golarion to imprison Rovagug. Which is correct?

Sometimes myths are just that—myths.

Furthermore, the "first great battle between orcs and 'men'" doesn't mean the first time humans fought them after the Quest for Sky. This could even be referring to a clash between orcs and another race on another planet. THAT SAID, the fact that Gorum helped imprison Rovagug pretty much nails the myth of him being forged in a battle between "orcs and men" down as a myth, not a fact.

Which is fine with me, since the "first great battle between orcs and men" sounds too Tolkien to me on the one hand, and too ... let's call it "old-fashioned" in its unnecessarily gendered language for my taste.

I can easily imagine what would happen if Karzoug or the Whispering Tyrant conquered the world. But I honestly have no idea what would happen if Deskari or Unity conquered the world. Would the denizens of Golarion live a happy and prosperous life under the just and fair rule of demon lords or Unity? Or would they be slaughtered to the last man?

Deskari: He'd destroy most of us and keep enough of the rest around so that we'd wish for death but wouldn't get it because demons enjoy the suffering, and if there's not anyone left to suffer they get bored.

Unity: We'd all live lives. They wouldn't be happy or prosperous because things like happiness or prosperity wouldn't be things that would matter in a Unity-ruled world and we wouldn't know any better since he'd have overwritten our minds with servitude-oriented programs.

What we called "traits" in Pathfinder 1st edition we call "backgrounds" in 2nd edition. We haven't moved away from the "Pick a thing from your character's past that gives you some flavor and a bit of mechanical rules boosts" trope... the rules work a little different and the name is different, but the concept remains intact in 2nd edition.

Same with Starfinder—what Pathfinder 1 calls traits, Starfinder calls "Character Themes."

The MAIN difference from Pathfinder 1's traits and Pathfinder 2's backgrounds/Starfinder's character themes is that these rules elements informed by your character's pre-game history are officially part of the core character creation process and not something we added in a year after the core rules came out.

Okay, then what is your opinion of the fact that Starfinder themes and PF2 backgrounds offer fewer choices -- not in terms of how many are available, but in terms of how many items the player gets to pick? You get one Starfinder theme and one PF2 background -- but by default you get two PF1 traits with options that let you select even more?

Why are the four Heralds of Dust in the Feast of Dust module considered to be harbingers? Their CR seem too low for harbingers, and they don't grant any domains.

They have fewer choices because they haven't been out as long. That's an absolutely unfair criticism to utilize. Pathfinder 1 had over a decade of multiple monthly lines of products, and the number of traits that produced is a factor of the laws of time and space alone. Given time, there'll be plenty of character themes to choose from, as with backgrounds.

Keep in mind that while you pick two traits, that's pretty much it, and the end result is a single feat's worth of power. A character trait continues to give you things as you level up, and a single 2nd edition background gives you MORE stuff than a single feat.

My opinion is that both Starfinder and Pathfinder 2 are BETTER than the trait system for 1st edition, which was always limited by the fact that it was an add-on and not part of the core character building process.
