Voted.

Thank you very much Carbon. I appreciate it.

Sorry None of the Above

I just like them to have solid flavorful writing and unique abilites, no more monsters with Grab please.

I much prefer monster books like the Monsternomicons and Blood Enemies of Cerillia. But I am a special case.

I voted, but only picked one. Since only one applied to me of the options and that was by creation type. Which is not always true. My big thing is if monsters are new and interesting with a cool twist on old idea's. Quote the above cause I agree with the general feeling.

Voted, and good luck!

10 days later and Monster by Environment have a slim lead over Monsters by Creature Type. It is still anybody's game. Tell us how we should write Book of Beasts 2.

Liberty's Edge

I like my monsters medium well, with potatoes and steak sauce.

I voted Type and Environment, but in actuality I prefer monster books with a lot of variety in all the options presented as opposed to focusing on one or a few. Those two are simply the "lesser evils", you might say :)

Voted. My preference is for twists on regular monsters, or levels on top, so that troll (or whatever) is quite a surprise for cocky PCs who are aware that the monster's CR is below their power level.

I voted, but was sad to see my choice second to last.

I prefer to take monsters and add class levels to them. One thing I've been toying with is limited classes that could be added to animals and similar less intelligent monsters.

Brute: adds rage to an animal.
Stalker: quintessential hunter type.
Lurker: adds sneak attack.
Pack Leader: rally's/inspires others of same type.

I could just add barbarian levels to a bear, but that feels like cheating.

This isn't exactly what you're asking, but I'll add my feedback in the hopes it adds something to your product.

I like unique monsters that have a number of harrying abilities, moderate offense and strong defense OTHER than AC. A good example of a monster I LOVE is a Gibbering Mouther. Raw stats it doesn't seem too bad, really. It does have dr/bludgeoning however so unless your main hacker is using a mace you'll be widdling it down slowly. At its level it will likely take out at least one of the party, potentially harming himself or others. Then there's the spittle, and the swallow whole.

It has a variety of tactics it can employ, and make decisions round by round. In the right circumstance it can be a lethal opponent. That's what I like. Monsters that have a variety of tactics at their disposal, which make for long, grueling, but not necessarily brutal fights. I hate the idea that CR=more damage and higher AC. A monster should, like anything else in the game, challenge the players to think.

I love doing that too (it's actually my favorite pastime when I'm not currently DM'ing a game), but I prefer doing it myself rather than it being done for me. If I have a monster and a class I can combine them myself, so I want more monsters to choose from rather than someone else combining what's already there :)
