Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Alrighty, so everyone has 7,000 gp to use as they see fit. In addition, everyone but Ben should select one melee weapon and one ranged weapon to get upgraded to +1.

Ben: Larathiel has a special melee weapon for Mal that will allow him to make use of his skill at unarmed attacks while increasing the base damage and critical threat range from 1d4/20 to 1d6/19-20. (The Amulet of Might Fists will increase the threat range to 18-20 as it is essentially doubling something that has already been doubled.) The claws are a pair with each currently bearing a +1 enhancement bonus.

Since we've done the 'shopping trip adventure' a few times now, there's no need to revisit that so soon. Instead, since I know everyone is eager to move the story forward, we'll simply handle the shopping here in OoC. If you are wondering what equipment is permissible, the source books I allow are listed here along with whether special approval is required or not.

It will take a day or two to arrange transportation so the characters have a bit of time to get everything together. Just let me know if you have any questions, or what not.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone, and thanks for making this such a great game — I've really had a lot of fun GMing for you guys. :)

Merry Christmas as well to everyone!

Question: 1) Is Felmor entitled to the reward money and 2) Does he have time to spend it?

I also have two questions. Will this new weapon also enhance Mals bite attack similarly? And second, did you ever decide on a price for that Wild armor enhancement crystal thing? (The one that is an attachable crystal that bestows the Wild enhancement on a suit of armor?)

And merry Christmas guys. Hope you all have a good one.

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Eric: Yes, Felmor was along so he would most certainly be entitled to his wages and his share of the reward money. I made the aforementioned calculations with him in mind. He'll most likely be leaving for Silverwake around the same time the others depart for Dafar so he'll have time to make purchases in Malatesta.

Ben: No, it won't affect his bite attack, just his claws. The device is based on a system of quick-release mechanisms similar to the ones that Alexis and Alis use to conceal their wand and dagger respectively. It is an immediate action to deploy the blades and a full-round action that provokes an AoO to sheathe and reset each one.

Since they are strapped to you, they can be sundered but not disarmed. You could also hold a small item like a flask etc in your hand while attacking if need be. The damage type for these weapons is Piercing or Slashing. For anyone else, these would be considered an exotic weapon, however since you already have natural attacks, they are treated as being a martial weapon proficiency in the same way that an elven curveblade would be for an elf.

Do they continue functioning in Wildshape? They seem mechanical in nature, which would suggest they do not function in wildshape, but it's worth asking.

Cool, I will work on upgrading Felmor's gear once I have Lureene's gear purchased.

A couple of questions here, 1) Is the spell Light of Mercuria available for scribing into her spellbook, and 2) Can wands be recharged? If so then can they be charged partially or do they have to be charged to full?

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Ben: In wildshape they would meld into your new form the same way other equipment that lacks the Wild ability would.

In terms of how much a Wilding clasp would cost, I'm going to say it would have the same cost as a +4 suit of armor: 16,000gp. It is more useful than having that +3 quality added to an existing suit of armor, and as a +3 ability, it would require that armor to be +1 already.

Since you have craft wondrous item, Mal could make the item for himself for 8,000gp. I'm not certain if you guys have any other equipment to sell (such as Chivane's swords), but I would think that you should be pretty close to being able to afford finishing your vest and starting work on the wilding clasp. It will be a fairly lengthy voyage to reach Dafar after all.

Eric: If that's in the Spell Compendium then you should be able to pick up a copy from the shrine of Alíta at the Pantheon. Clerics and paladins aren't the only mortals who serve her cause.

Also, wands can be recharged using whatever the cost per charge should work out to for however many charges you are buying.

Alright, out to do Christmas stuff with the family for the next few hours. TTYL...

Ok, then that's what I'll do. The first chunk of change will go to finishing out the mats for Mal'a Druids Vestments. The rest will all go towards mats for Mal to make the Wild armor augmentation clasp. I'll do the math when I can get to a computer, but it should put him around 1500 or so gold short. I'll update the total when I can.

I also note the new claws on Mal's sheet.

Please remme er when you're shopping that Mal has Craft Wondrous Items, and you can help him with spells (to meet prerequisites for item crafting) if he doesn't have it. And Laith said we have a long ship voyage coming up.

I'll post my rolls for creation of the vest soon, too.

Remaining 327.7 g spent on the Druid's Vestments.

Spellcraft check for creation DC 15 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14. Are you kidding me? I missed this by 1 point?! Sigh. I guess I won't have Druid's Vestments, then.

What are the chances I could get an AA on the spell-craft roll above?

Which leaves me with 6672.7. Subtracting that from the 8k pricetag on mats for the clasp leaves 1327.7 mats still to be purchased before I can make the clasp.

Mal,

Lureene is looking to purchase a Pearl of Power, 2nd level. According to the magic item description, the only requirements is the creator must be able to cast spells of that level, which Lureene can certianly do. The construction cost would be only 2000 gp, which she will pay for, and take 2 days.

Let me know if that would work for you, Mal.

Edit: I don't suppose anyone else can assist Mal with the Spellcraft roll?

Another edit, Lureene has upgraded her Rapier and Shortbow to +1, and noted in her profile.

Priyya will be getting her MW scimitar and MW compound shortbow tuned up to +1.

I'm looking into other items. Mal, if I have cash left over, you are welcome to it. I'll let you know.

If Laith thinks Priyya's Clerical spellcraft knowledge is applicable to his Druidic works, I can make the AA roll...

Spellcraft (AA) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Speaking of Chivane and the Tar Dogs... did we ever sell those weapons we confiscated? I'm assuming their sales price was rolled into the reward money. Let us know if that is incorrect.

Mike, how long are we going to be in town? I'm wondering how much time we have to create items. There are essentially two or three items that would rock but some are out of my price range unless a deal can be struck and some help borrowed. Priyya has a grand total of $7630. In order of preference:

1. Phylactery of Positive Energy
Market Price: 11k GP
Creation Price: 5.5k GP + Create Wondrous + Assist by 10th Cleric
I'm thinking if we have the time, Priyya could beg the assistance of a high level local Cleric of Alita... mind you, she'd be willing to offer a chunk of cash to the church for the help... so 5.5k + X tithe < 11K.

2. Horn of Goodness
Market Price: 6.5k GP
Creation Price: 3250 GP + Create Wondrous + Magic Circle v Evil [need a Cleric assist]
Can the minotaur horn be used and how much does it reduce the price?

3. Increase Bracers from +2 to +3
Market Price: +5k GP
Creation Price: Don't think I can manage this because I wouldn't be able to wangle a deal with a 6th level Mage... so at that point, I'd be better spending the 5k elsewhere. Perhaps another protective magic item.

4. Increase Scimitar from +1 to +2 equivalent
Market Price: +6k GP
Creation Price: Not possible since we don't have Craft Arms
Since my weapons are getting pumped to +1, I could try to append another +1 or special ability for 6k GP... but again this depends on how long we'll be in town.

If we are leaving in a day or so and there is no time for crafting goods, let me know and I'll confine my search to 'off the shelf' items.

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

The party will have have 4 days in Malatesta. That would be the day we arrived (Astrath 10), and the three days following (11, 12 & 13). We will depart on the morning of the 5th day (Astrath 14).

Aid Another: I would say that the ability to aid another on something basically requires the knowledge on how to do that same task yourself. Last I checked, Mal was the only character with a Craft feat. The next closest thing we've got is Lureene with Scribe Scroll.

So while other characters without the necessary Craft feat could help out by casting requisite spells, without a similar Craft feat of their own, I'm not seeing how they would be able to help out on those Spellcraft checks. However...

Masterwork Labs: The embassy has professional quality tools and work areas for working on the crafting and refinement of magic items, spellbooks, etc. Go ahead and treat that as a +2 Circumstance bonus on your Spellcraft checks made for crafting, scribing spells, etc. Also, I am perfectly OK with allowing you to take 10 on crafting checks, particularly in a safe, controlled environment like this. (On a rocking ship with no ranks in Sailor? Well probably not so much).

Ben:
Druid Vestments: With that in mind, Mal would not only have passed his Spellcraft check for the Druid's Vestments, but he would have been able to finish it in one day instead of two:

Spellcraft DC 20 10 + 8 + 2 = 20 masterwork

Extra Cash: If Mal is willing to do the crafting for her, I had planned for Alis to buy a Belt of Incredible Dexterity +2, and to upgrade to Bracers of Armor +2. If Mal enchants the belt himself, she's more than happy to pay him the extra $2000 she would have had to pay if she bought it elsewhere. Since the DC is low enough, he could also work on it at the accelerated rate and finish it in one day:

Spellcraft DC 18 10 + 8 + 2 = 20 masterwork

Likewise for the Bracers, she would normally have to pay 3000gp to get them upgraded by someone else. Mal could net 1475 if Alis simply buys a scroll of Mage Armor for Lureene to scribe into her spellbook, and then Lureene casts it for Mal. Although, if Mal is willing to do both items, the ~1500 might be better spent on a pair of new CLW wands.) These could be finished in one day:

Spellcraft DC 17 10 + 8 + 2 = 20 masterwork

Eric:
Pearl of Power II: The DC to make this item would be 22 meaning Mal would not be able to take 10 when crafting it. Furthermore accelerated casting would raise the DC to 27 which would be pretty much impossible for him (roll of 17 or better). Given that we have a few other items in the queue that could be guaranteed to be completed in short order with no chance of failure, this might be something you have to pay full price for.

Justin:
Phylactery: If we have to ask for help from someone outside the party then it's going to have to be full price. To do otherwise would devalue the worth of having a character sacrifice a feat slot for the crafting ability. For purposes of balance and fairness, that's not something I'm willing to do. At 11,000, this might be out of reach.

Horn: Part of the reason for the low cost of this item is that it can swing either way. You could pay the crafters the embassy keeps on retainer (150/each) to cast magic circle vs. evil and magic circle vs good for Mal while he is making it. The masterwork horn you already have would count as 250 towards the cost which would lower the remaining cost to 3000. This would take 2 days to complete.

Bracers of Armor +3: As per the phylactery above, since no one in the party can make these until 6th level, you would have to pay someone in the embassy's employ the difference of 5000gp for the upgrade. This would take 2.5 days to complete.

Scimitar Upgrade: You could pay the 6000gp to someone in the embassy's employ to perform the upgrade. It would take 3 days.

Non-Party Crafting: I'm going to say that the embassy has four crafters on retainer, two arcane, two divine, all with a +15 Spellcraft modifier for purposes of crafting items. However, as the embassy only has four pro-grade crafting labs and Mal will be using one exclusively, that means a total of four days of crafting time at each of the other three labs, minus whatever time Lureene requires for scribing scrolls and writing spells into her spellbook. (The weapon upgrades are being handled during off-shifts which is why they have effectively up to 12 days of time to work on wondrous items.)

Ok here is Lureene's shopping list:
Current total 7401 gp.

Sell Gilban's spellbook

Since we arrived in the middle of one day, does that mean that Mal has only 3 actual work days to craft stuff? So if he spends a day on his vestment and two days on Alis' equipment, he's pretty much tapped out, correct?

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

As far as Chivane's equipment goes, Ambassador Kiril Galadain is a collector of the armaments of various secret societies and military organizations. He is willing to buy Chivane's armaments, but only if he can have the whole set including the armor. He's willing to pay 10% more than the usual 50%, but advises that you will probably have a difficult time selling items with the mark of an assassins' guild otherwise — not many people would want to risk dealing in such goods for fear of reciprocity.

All told for the two swords, mask, crossbow (he doesn't want to keep the poison bolts), ring, and armor, he would be willing to pay 9165:

+1 sawtooth: 1410
mw sawtooth: 210
mw hand xbow: 240
wasp mask: 3600
wasp armor: 2505
ruby coil ring: 1200

I figured he'd pull a late night, although with his plans for drinking... ;)

Lureene would give up the armor without hesitation, well, maybe a little, although since the good Knight-Captain is departing, it just is not as much fun as it was before ;)

I figure we all have a right to say what happens with the gear as we all fought her, and we are all entitled to the profits, IMO.

So, with the sale of Chivane's gear, everyone gets 1833 gp extra.

Since Priyya isn't wearing any of those items, she isn't wearing any of those items, she will refrain from offering an opinion on whether to accept the deal. I'll leave it to you guys.

The newly minted Sergeant will no doubt be too drunk to work. :)

Hey Mike... I've been looking through the thread but I'm missing what the sale price on the minotaur horn is. Can I sell it for 250 or half that much?

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

You can sell it for 250.

Okay, to make sure we have all the cards on the table.

Mal has already spent 8 hours in the workshop (successfully) making his Druid's Vestments.

Question about workshop time, crafting time, and sleep. It requires 8 hours of work to create something magical. As there are 24 hours in a day, and Mal would require 8 hours of sleep, could i use the remaining 8 every day to double my output? It would be grueling, and he'd probably accrue some fatigue, but isn't Priyya capable of wiping away fatigue with her paladin class ability? If so, could she and I work for 16 hours for hose three days and double my potential output?

If this is possible, I could go ahead and make Alis's requests, this would take up one full day (2 eight-hour creation times). Leaving us a lot of extra cash and 3 more eight-hour creation slots. This would also allow me to accrue the rest of the cash for the remaining materials for my clasp. Then I'd funnel the rest of that money back into the party cash, opening up more potential for Lureene and Priyya to get the goodies they want/need. It may also free up enough money to possibly get one of those expensive items for Priyya.

Laith, is all this legal? or are you only allowed the one 8 hour creation slot per day - regardless of how many actual hours in the day there are?

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Ben: Since Lureene sold Chivane's equipment to the ambassador for his collection, you should now have enough gold on your own to cover the costs of that Wilding Clasp. It amounted to an extra 1833 for each of the five characters.

PRD wrote:

Magic Item Creation

Regardless of the time needed for construction, a caster can create no more than one magic item per day.

The caster can work for up to 8 hours each day. He cannot rush the process by working longer each day, but the days need not be consecutive, and the caster can use the rest of his time as he sees fit.

On an unrelated note, Elsemar's rotational period is 22 hours long, not 24.

The items Alis ends up purchasing are...

  • Belt of Incredible Dexterity +2
  • Bracers of Armor +2: upgrade from +1.
  • Cloak of Resistance +1
  • Wand of Cure Light Wounds

If Mal is able to save her a few grand, then she'll try to pick up a lesser crystal of energy assault (1d6 shock) for her rapier (3000gp). Otherwise, if he's got other items he'd rather work on, then she's quite content to simply go shopping.

Justin: If you were thinking of going the flaming scimitar route, those weapon augmentation crystals from the Magic Item Compendium are nowhere near as expensive as the weapon properties. Attaching or detaching such a crystal is a move action that does not provoke an AoO. Each weapon or armor item can hold one such crystal.

Least Crystals can be attached to masterwork or better items.
Lesser +1 or higher.
Greater +3 or higher.

The crystal that Felmor has on his longsword is a Lesser Crystal of Fire Assault.

The motto of every boy scout, or in L's case, Girl Scout is....Be Prepared, he he.

Seriously, this is a backup in case she does find herself in melee with certain evil outsiders, who don't like spellcasters, he he. Plus, she can loan the crystal out to whoever could use it more in case we do run into such creatures.

I am happy to make those items/upgrades for Alis, but I was gonna take the money you said would then go to Mal and funnel it towards getting Priyya's expensive phylactery thing. Our main healer healing more efficiently benefits us all, IMO.

In that case, Mal would use the Chivane armor to finish up the mats for the Wilding clasp. (and save them for the long voyage, since that's a 16 day project.) then his three days of crafting are for Mal, Alis, and Alis. Then his remaining cash will go towards Priyya's healing hat purchase. Hopefully that will get her enough to purchase it.

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Ben: Ah ok, well more healing would certainly be helpful if we can actually afford it. That would also let Justin do a bit more in combat other than having to channel quite as frequently.

Let's see what we can do here...

7000 reward + tithes
+
1833 Chivane's equipment
+
2000 Mal crafting Alis' belt
+
1475 Mal upgrading Alis' bracers
---------
12,308
-
11,000 Phylactery of Positive Energy
---------
1308 Alis' change

Yep, looks like the three of us pooling resources/crafting talents can cover it!

Justin: Since the Phylactery was your #1 highest priority item, I'm going to presume that you'll be going ahead and getting that. If you have changed your mind, then let us know.

I was just looking at options for crafting, and anyone who wants to drop 1k gold for a +1 natural armor bonus, feel free. The spellcraft DC is low enough that I should be able to hit it on the boat. I can't use it myself, but it may be a good option for the rest of you.

Edit: sorry, for clarification, that would be Mal making you an Amulet of Natural Armor +1.

Actually, I realize Mal has 505.7g left after finishing collecting mats for his clasp. I don't have a need for it, anyone wanna get an america of Natural Armor +1 for 500g?

Mal, unfortunately the Amulet won't stack with L's natural armor, otherwise I would have considered this.

Now Lureene will scribe some scrolls.

Scroll #1: Comprehend Languages, Identify, Obscure Object, Rope Trick
Time to scribe is 8 hours.
COST 175 GP

Scroll #2: Hypnotism, Mount, Sleep, Blur
Time to scribe is 8 hours.
COST 112.5 GP

894.1 GP
-175 GP
-------
719.1 GP
-112.5 GP
-------
606.6 GP Total.

FWIW - Priyya sold her Minotaur Horn to close the gap. So her total savings (minus a little walking around money) is 9713 GP.

So, to bridge the 11k GP gap, she just needs 1287 GP. I'd love to have Mal make her an Amulet of Natural AC +1 but that would take another 1000 GP - so 2287 GP total. So if, with finagling, we can close that gap... Priyya would be delighted.

My theory behind the utility of the phylactery is pretty simple. It pretty much doubles my healing rate and damage to undead at this level, not to mention raising the likelihood of averaging rolls - so Alita will no longer appear quite so angry (with some of those crappy low rolls). :) Being able to heal half as much gives me a lot more time to be offensive and cast other fun spells.

Make the price of that amulet 500; I offered up some of my leftovers for just that reason. I'll craft it on the boat.

Spell craft check DC 8 (for amulet for Priyya) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Spellcraft check DC 14 (for Wilding Clasp) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

So that's 17 days of work for Mal on the ship.

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Edit: Forgot about the +250 for Priyya's horn that she sold.

Alis already has an amulet of natural armor +1 so she's good on that front. It looks like Priyya isn't wearing any magical necklaces though. Since she's got the lowest AC of the 3 characters most likely to be engaged in melee, that might be a good addition for her to have.

The last three items Alis is purchasing with the gold left over after Priyya buys the Phylactery are:

  • Acrobat Boots (+2 to Acrobatics, and 3 charges per day to increase movement speed for 1 round)
  • Eternal Wand (cast endure elements 2/day)
  • Least Crystal of Life Keeping (+1 on saves vs negative energy/death effects)

Incidentally, if you buy clothing items that would be replacing items already found in your explorer's outfit, then I'm going to assume you are wearing the better item rather than say... two pairs of boots. Such replacements would therefore not increase the weight of the gear you are wearing.

For ease-of-reference, an explorer's outfit weighs eight pounds and contains the following items. For the sake of simplicity, we'll just assume each item weighs 1 pound:

  • Boots
  • Breeches/Skirt
  • Belt
  • Shirt
  • Vest/Jacket
  • Gloves
  • Cloak
  • Scarf/Hat

I saw that but didn't wanna speak for ya. :) Just let me know how much Priyya 'owes' Mal and Alis for the GP assist. She likes to keep track of her 'debts'.

Priyya doesn't owe Alis anything. She benefits from healing as much as anyone else. Plus it lets her conserve her rather limited divine spellcasting. She considers it a wise investment.

BTW, I have to say that I'm amused that the Dark Manes each went for a couple BIG items whereas the Blonde Bombers went for lots of little things. :)

EDIT: Oh, and Alis has about another 300 left over that she could put towards Priyya's amulet. That should mean she only has 200gp to go.

Priyya was thinking of 'debt' in terms of acknowledging your help, not as in an amount of cash she would repay. There is a Honor Debts section on Priyya's sheet. :p

What can I say? Priyya and Mal like BIG toys.

Hey, you all keep on pumping heal effects into Mal, and he'll keep on trying to find ways to deck you out. Gotta spoil his girls, ya know?

And about the gear... Who wants an iPod when you can get a tank, right?

Ah gotcha, well if you want to put Alis down for providing the diamonds to undo the poison and any gold towards the amulet then feel free. Alis herself generally doesn't fret too much over things like money. She's just trying to ensure this mission doesn't go over-budget hence not tapping 'plot platinum' for personal benefit.

As for liking 'big toys', having come factory-equipped with a couple herself, the princess is well aware of how much most people like 'big toys'. I'm sure she and Lureene would never begrudge their dark-maned sword sister for compensating.

/runs like hell ;D

Priyya looks for her shotgun...

Priyya did collect some of Lucia's (Erinyes) ashes. Would those be of value to a collector or as a spellcasting material? If she could net 200 GP it would cover the last bit of her amulet. Priyya could also sell her 1st Pearl of Power if push came to shove. I'd prefer to keep it but ya gots to do what you gots ta do...

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Heh. Sure, we'll say that one of the embassy's crafters can actually use those ashes as part of the materials required for making a fire-resistance item. I'll put Priyya down for an Amulet of Natural Armor +1...

I also updated the matrix to list the new necklace that Lureene seems to have picked up. ;)

Sweet! I knew collecting those ashes would come in handy.

Priyya's sheet is updated and she is ready to test out her new toy by blasting some undead into oblivion.

Male Sky Elf Game Master lv 20

Hey guys, I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up just so you don't think I've lost my mind introducing all these new NPCs. As of post #2501 we moved into the actual AP material. Just figured you might want to know that I'm introducing the NPCs who are part of the story rather than developing MPD.

Feel free to interact with them as much or as little as you like, just know that you're likely to be seeing a lot of these folks. ;)

Only two more to go...

Improved Unarmed Strike!

(Done!)

Combat Expertise

Sweet!

You bastards with your easy choices...
Hmmm... OK, the Lay on Hands ones are out I think. So it is down to Extra Channel or Improved Channel

2 more channels a day - which I use all the time

VERSUS

+2 to the DC - which makes it easier to scour the battlefield of undead and could pay dividends particularly after I take Alignment Channel. Demon Will saves are nasty, that +2 could make a difference... and it's not like we've run into any demons or devils YET or will in the future.

<.<
>.>

Where's Lucia?

So, good defense all the time OR the periodically useful ability against major nasties?

Yes, I am fielding opinions if you've got one. :)

Boy, this is a tough call...You cannot go wrong with either one. I am leaning for Improved Channel, because Lureene will be fighting demons...guaranteed, and unless Priyya puts her out of her misery, then so will everyone else.
