1. Paladin. 1st level gives you heavy armor, good saves, ability to detect evil at will and most importantly ability to smite one monster per day. Getting through DR is incredibly useful. 2nd level gives you even better saves and some quick healing. You don't need a sky high charisma to enjoy paladin.
2. Fighter. Also gives you heavy armor. Unlike paladin though there are no extra fancy stuff at the level 1. Far more flexible than paladin though.
3. Monk. Gives you a bunch of feats and good saves at the first level. Adding WIS to armor class could mean a very good AC for cleric especially, if one of your allies can and will cast magic armor on you. Grapple your enemies to death!
4. Barbarian. Fast move and rage. Downside is you can't cast while raging.
5. Ranger. If you have a clue what you will be fighting, this could be great. However the lack of heavy armor makes it inferior for cleric multiclassing I think.

I dont have my copy of the APG with me but I am pretty certain that there was an archtype in there to help with this wasnt there?
There aren't any Cleric, Sorcerer or Wizard archetypes, instead there are new subdomains, bllodlines and subschools. One of the subdomains might be useful though.

A LG Cleric of Indomae with the war (tactics) and good (archon) domains is quite a good melee prospect- instant LS prof, two great sub domain powers (your party will love you for the aura of menace). Holy Vindicator makes channeling vs undead better and heavy armor prof. The Better BAB is cancelled out by the 3 cl loss on spells like divine power.

I'm creating a a cleric PC but I would like to dip into a level or two of another class so the PC is a bit more effective in combat. Any suggestions on classes, feats, etc?
Thanks.....
My advice: More Cleric.
Just spend the feats to get a weapon (if you need it) and heavy armor (if you need it).
Loosing caster levels is not the solution.

Edward Pereira:
What is your character concept?
I mean, besides "cleric good at fighting."
Who is your cleric's deity (or what is his/her ethos)? Why is your character taking time away from his divine channeling training to focus more on combat training? Do you have a particular fighting style in mind (perhaps to compliment your deity's favored weapon)?
Mechanically, what domains do you plan on taking? What feats are you looking at?
What kind of party is this character in? Does this party have any particular strengths to be enhanced or weaknesses that need to be filled in? Spellcasting-wise, do you think you will be focusing on healing, buffing, or debuffing, or a little bit of everything?
There are a LOT of ways to build a fighty cleric, most of which are effective. I think to be most helpful to you to make sure you have a character you like in addition to kicking ass, it would be good to get the answer to some of these questions. I apologize if I am being a pain in the ass.
