Are races proficent with weapons that have their racial name in them?
Ex dawrven War ax or Halfling Sling Staff.
they tend to treat them as martial weapons rather than exotic. a few odd-balls may be exceptions, but generally speaking they treat them as martial, and have an entry in their racial traits
for example, from the pfsrd:
Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers, and treat any weapon with the word “dwarven” in its name as a martial weapon.

Yes. It says that under every race profile.
They treat them as Martial Weapons though. So if your character cannot use All martial weapons then I wouldn't allow it.
As in I would not allow a Halfling Sorcerer to use a Sling Staff since they are only proficient with Simple Weapons.
I see the benefit to classes like Barbarian, Fighter and Rangers to get a free Exotic Weapon Prof.
That's my interpretation.

What about like for dwarf it says heavy picks. This is already a martial weapon, why bother listing it? I was thinking that this is a typo but it hasn't been in either of the erratas.
They are different things. They not count HP as martials, they are directly proficent with them (say, Dwarf Wizard).

Then elves can use long and short bows. Good.
Gnome illusionists have to take a fighter level to use the hooked hammer. Acceptable.
All elves can use all kinds of bows. They gain the proficiency with those weapons.
In addition, they can train all elven weapons as martial rather than exotic.
The first one is a boon to classes that are not proficient with all martial weapons, the latter is a a boon to classes that are proficient.

What about the weapon list in Gnomes of Golarion? The title states Gnome Weapons, but they are listed as exotic weapons and none of them have "gnome" in the name. For my home games, they are martial for gnome characters, but I could never get anything official stating if they are under Weapon Familiarity for gnomes.

maybe its for that gnome ability/feat/whatever that says that they are considered proficient in any weapon they personally craft...i cant remember the exact thingy.
