First official weekend of the year, and a lot of people are snowed in. Understandable that madness may ensue.

Is snow removal going more smoothly in your area?

Yes and no. There are still some distant areas of Long Island that are still needing to clear roads, and here in Brooklyn we have a few sizable piles of snow that more crowd the road than block it. We're getting that storm that's hammering the south over the next day or two, and the Mayor has sworn that the city is ready this time. A few people were demoted or fired over the debacle, but far more were demoted than fired, at least according to the media.

Between Christmas and my youngest son's birthday, he got the first two sets of Old School Sesame Street. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the current Sesame Street is crap by comparison?

It's pretty consistent around here; they do a good job on the main roads, but they ignore the side streets for days, and it tends to melt quickly up here.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before or not, but Urban Outfitters and several other clothing-design oriented companies have taken over several buildings near the one I work in on the old Philly Naval Base. One of the buildings has been partly converted into a food court and we go over there sometimes for lunch. In the area just before you get to the food court, they always have artwork by (I'm guessing) local artists on display.

So, today, the wife and I go over there, and they've go a new display up - shelves filled with sculptures of rabbits, each one made out of something different. There was at least 30 of them. Maybe more. It was creepy, I tell you. I said to the wife that I can just imagine the place at night - all the little rabbit sculptures come alive and feed off any poor fool unlucky enough to be caught there.

F%#+ing creepy......

I've been doing a lot of cooking lately. The more I do, the more I want to do. Last night I made chicken dijon with roasted potatoes and greeb beans amandine. Earlier in the week it was chicken with artichoke hearts. And last weekend lasagna with homemade bread. Why is it that homemade food is so delicious?

Howdy, FAWTLies!

I'm back from my vacation--currently, I'm taking a lunch break from reading the tons of e-mails and prepping answers to a similar number of questions that came up while I was gone.

This was not unexpected, of course, so I'm okay with it.

The vacation was absolutely awesome. I would highly recommend the Disney Cruise Line to anyone. In fact, we'll be going on another cruise as soon as we can afford it (and make it work for our schedule).

The highlight of the trip, by far, was our excursion to actually swim and play with bottlenose dolphins in Nassau. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the whole family.

I'm still trying to catch up on all the posts from the previous week, but I did see Wolfthulu's post on the weird note. Very strange, indeed. I hope nothing bad comes of it.

Heh, well, yes, our mutual aquaintance has it very bad. My huge tarantula mini has to be hidden when she's coming over. And she's jumped out of a MOVING VEHICLE when she discovered a spider hiding between the roof of the car and the visor. Scared the crap outta me, as I was driving. Maybe she teleported. I heard a shriek, and then I looked over and she was ten feet away from the car, shivering.

Y'know, if a Dice-off isn't that fair because of Solnes' dice-rolling, maybe you could think of some other contest between the players.

Actually, she nearly jumped out of a moving vehicle under the same conditions. The only thing that prevented her was a) the seatbelt and b) she was driving.

Yes, she is not as bad as a good friend of ours up here who changed how she drove to work because of a billboard with a picture of a lady with spiders on her.

Since then they are called tigers. Eight legged tigers, but tigers none the less.

I laughed so hard I almost cried but did not ever make fun of them.

We also had a supervisor, at the same job, who was previously in the military. He also had a severe phobia to spiders. One I found out I could respect. Seems he was stationed in Okinawa and was on night time maneuvers. He got a little lost and ended up going through some brush. Walking up to his fellow soldiers they told him to stop and pulled their knives out. He then noticed where the flashlights were aiming. His thigh. Well it seems that in the brush he picked up an 8 or 9 inch banana spider wrapped around his thigh. They pried it off with the knives and he has since had issues with spiders of any size.

O.o

I never ran into one that big during my stay in Japan - but I was on Shikoku, not Okinawa, so it is significantly colder. I did see one about the size of the palm of my hand (3.5-4 inches) scuttle under the coke machine in the office one afternoon, however... It took me a week to go over to the machine and buy anything...

Of course, I am the last person to point fingers for phobias. I have a fear of whole green peppers and any plant with large leaves. I may point and laugh a little - I expect only the same back, honestly - but that's about all. :)

INSANELY JEALOUS OF YOUR TRIP TO JAPAN!!!

Why do green peppers and plants with large leaves freak you out? That sounds kind of strange.

Large, slavering dogs have always made me nervous, though not afraid. I used to be scared taking the subway over large bodies of water, but that fear is gone without a trace. As a child, I was TERRIFIED of the main character creatures from The Dark Crystal, but now they more skeeve me out than make me afraid(although I still think they look inhuman). My love of Green Lantern/afro-latin machismo has seen to it that I grapple with the emotion whenever I feel it, so I don't think I have any phobias.

Just because I am heavy doesn't mean I am completely out of whack. Now time to get ready for work.

Sovereign Court

Nope, it's really just whole green peppers. They're hollow...and I don't know why, but I imagine they're about to explode and billions of bugs will pour out, like a scene in the Mummy. It always requires a steadying breath for me to hold onto or chop up a whole bell pepper. When I was a child I was once chased, screaming, through my grandmother's back yard by a cousin holding a freshly picked green pepper. My grandmother, an avid gardener, spanked me, sat me in the corner, then tried to make me hold the green pepper in question the rest of the afternoon. I got spanked a couple more times, but I wouldn't hold it. Even when she pressed it into my hands and held my hands on it, I fought her, and when she let go I dropped the pepper, and got spanked again. My grandma is a little too practical to deal with over imaginative grandchildren very well...

Big leaves are probably bug based too, in the end. But BIG leaves - like sycamore leaves, for example, or the giant maple leaves in really old, big maple trees - freak me out. Brocolli leaves too - especially since they're all holey and pale...like zombie leaves. eeeeeeeeeeeew.

I didn't take a trip to Japan. I lived there for two years - 2000 to 2002. :) I went over on the JET Programme and taught English in community ed classes to pre-elementary and elementary students, and also in the local junior high.

OH, and yeah, the Dark Crystal bad guys were scary when I was a kid too. But Watership Down really freaked me out.

I was bitten as a child, and was scared of dogs for quite a while, but have had more friends with well behaved (or at least nice if slightly under-disciplined) dogs, many large, and have gotten over most of that fear. The poor dog that bit me had been tortured by the neighborhood kids just a few minutes before, and then I walked by, unaware that it'd been provoked, and I was within the chain radius - so I got bit.
