One of the guys from 3.5 privet sanctuary (Ryan Costello, Jr) does a Pathfinder product news and reviews show called know direction. It is very well done and informative but no actual play. I listen to that and 3.5 privet sanctuary, both great.
I didn’t know about the d20 radio one though and will check it out, Thanks! But it looks like news and reviews also. Don’t get me wrong I will listen to it. (I have a pod cast addiction) but I’m looking for “actual play”. Anyone know of one/ record one?

As it turns out, we could actually create an "actual play" podcast without much trouble at all, however...
Is there "actual interest" in this "actual play"? Who wants to listen to sosmething like this? What else should accompany it that would make it more interesting and engaging for you?
I'd be interested, though I can't say what else should accompany said podcast, other than the actual play itself.

The best actual play podcasts are those that are well edited and shortened to about a half hour. I would also like to hear some commentary . Plus it would be interesting to hear wrap up shows going over the campaign at certain intervals.

See I'm the opposite, I like longer ones with everything left in. It makes you feel like you're actually sitting at the table with everyone. My favorite place for actual play podcasts is RPG.MP3, they have tons of stuff in the archives and while most of it is 3.5 D&D, they do occasionally dip into other games for short runs.

I think it would be great if we could listen to the game designers/developers play, to see how they interact with their own creation. Maybe get some of the writers and interns in there, too.
That might be difficult. But more to the point, I expect it is likely to be somewhat disheartening as well.
There are different skill sets involved in "gaming". Some designers are good crunchers and story guys -- but indifferent writers who are saved by their editors. Others are clever designers but poor DMs/GMs in the sense that their acting and roleplay abilities fall well short of the mark.
That doesn't make them bad designers; it simply makes them less than stell DMs. (Just like mostly everybody else, in my experience).
Some designers are gifted GMs. Nicholas Logue, for example, is an excellent designer, great crunch and story guy and a good writer to boot. But the amaxing thing is, if you get him down at a table? He's likely to not even use a module he wrote and instead will just run a game off the cuff. Logue is a graduate of improv theatre, teaches it and appears in an improv group as I understand it. By all means, Nichola Logue is an *Awesome* DM.
All by way of saying, while you might well enjoy a session hoted by Nicholas Logue, there are some other designers whose talents lie in other areas. Great designer does not necessarily lead to an anetertaining podcsast.
We'll give all of this some thought though. It might be that we can create some edited play sessions to act as an "appendix" to some of our reviews, so that listeners can download those segments they wish to hear if they are curious. Kingmaker, in particular, would seem to be ripe for this approach.
I want to thnk about it some more though. There's a lot on our respective plates right now -- and I am not sure that we have the time to do it. We might though - so let me think about this for a bit and talk it over with Azmyth.

Phasics just turned me on to your podcast steel wind, and so far i love it. I’m listening to #2 right now. Please keep up the good work. I am just getting into pathfinder and your information is very useful.
What I like about actual play podcasts is the peek at other people’s game tables. It gives me fresh ideas or new interpretations. I like to hear how people streamline certain mechanics (more of necessity in 3.5). As for pathfinder, it would be entertaining as well as a good introduction to a pathfinder noob like myself.
If your current podcast group did it you could do a separate podcast that ran through modules that you are dissecting on the main pod cast.

What else should accompany it that would make it more interesting and engaging for you?
One of the things I really enjoy about the Critical Hits actual play (especially the earlier episodes) was the discussion on how things worked. One of the players was a complete newbie to tabletop gaming, so he would ask questions as they went through it. Not so many that it became a constant interuption to the game. But when major new mechanics came up. There was also a bit of discussion with the DM at the end of the episodes discussing both the mechanics and the DM's point of view on things. As a bit of a newb myself, I found all of that very helpful and interesting.

I love the Chronicles podcast, and Know Direction - each does things evry differently, without overlap. Way to go both of you! I just wish they came mroe often, but understand why they don't.
Actual play: Probably the best I've heard have been the Wizards/Penny Arcade ones (they have a Dark Sun adventure up right now). Icosohedrophilia had some good ones as well. Many others have food noise and chewing throughout the adventure - drives me nuts.
Were I directing such a thing with endless resources, the podcast would have video (or at least stills) of the battlemap during combat, and perhaps a second version with the GM overdubbing their comments like a "Director's Commentary" DVD. But that's a lot of work, so I'm not holding my breath.
You almost need to set up the game specifically for the podcast, and enforce table rules (like NO FOOD!) that make the game less enjoyable for the players. A recording or video shoot is an invasive procedure, it can be great for the viewer or the participant but rarely both at the same time.
(If anyone needs an audio editor for their podcast, drop me a line... )

That's true. You like to have a few different types, a newbie, a real old schoolers, a true role player and maybe even a min/maxer

Oh my goodness, I am so with you. I listened to about a half hour of an AP where the guy who must have been closest to the mic kept loudly crunching away at potato chips. At one point I couldn't take it anymore, rushed to the pantry and grabbed some pretzels.
We have never done an AP for Know Direction but 3.5 Private Sanctuary episode 37 was a Pathfinder Alpha playtest actual play. There's a very different audience for APs so we never revisited the idea, and the unidirectional microphone we record the podcasts with meant we couldn't just set a mic up in the middle of the table. We needed to pass the player mic around while the GM kept him. It was too much of a pain to revisit with our equipment and we aren't in the financial position to afford any more.

Thanks! Episode 003 - City of Golden Death is >>done<< and in the can. It will be ready for download later tonight/ early Friday morning.
Episode 003 features: a discussion about the Hero Builder announcement; a Character Workshop segment featuring as the core concept a Pyrotechnics Wizard in honour of "Blow Stuff Up" Day; an interview with Joshua Frost (author of City of Golden Death); and, of course, our review and deconstruction of the final module in the Price of Immortality trilogy, City of Golden Death. (total length 2:18)

This is, actually, totally doable on a tech level :) If you have not listened to the Chronicles Podcast on an iPod, you might have missed the fact that we change the cover art for each podcast to use the cover art of the featured module under review.
Provided you listen to the podcast on an iPhone, iPod touch - or at least on your computer with an app that displays the album cover during the podcast -- I can hijack those id3 tags for that purpose and have the album artwork change during the podcast to reflect the changes in the battlemap (well -- most of them) and display the map at a "usable" resolution. We would just split the podcast into tracks and bundle it as an "album" and have each "track" in the podcast change the battlemap, as required.
I don't know how iTunes friendly that sort of bundling would be, however, so that is a concern.
You almost need to set up the game specifically for the podcast, and enforce table rules (like NO FOOD!) that make the game less enjoyable for the players. A recording or video shoot is an invasive procedure, it can be great for the viewer or the participant but rarely both at the same time.
This is not a problem for us and we have a vast array of microphones to work with. We can ensure that the source sound quality is exceptionally good.
I'll give it some more thought, but I admit I am warming to this idea, particularly as a supplement to the featured review in terms of providing an example of the module during actual play.

Steel Wind,
I am not above begging. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!! You guys are doing a quality podcast, It would be awesome if you did AP of Price of Immortality trilogy! (tangent) Who does the Red wine and V song at the end of Chronicles?
Ryan Costello, that goes for you too! 3.5ps is very well done! I was glad to hear "The Shelf" get a shout out again in the last cast, I was afraid you'd forgotten the old girl :) Your play group seems really solid and sounds like a group of fun people. Would you guys revisit the idea of an AP cast of your games? Karsk lives!!!

I've always enjoy actually play casts, I've found the more engaging ones bring the tabletop comedy and humor to the listener. Gives you a sense that your actually at the table.
Another crucial thing is how everyone GM included describes their actions during combat.
comment like
"I ... ... ... move here and attack"
dosen't come across all that well
comments like
" Well my character X barges through the door , skirts around left of what he thinks is a pressure plate and attacks the Y monster , giving a flank to my good buddy Z."
we don't need to see the table if we can grasp whats actually happening just from the table talk.
of course its a fine line between the fun banter of action descriptions and a forced descriptions people only do for the good of podcasters.
guess it just depends what kind of gamers you are. could be the most natural thing in the world to cast a session or it could be the most awkward thing you've tried to do.
regardless I've definitely listen to any pathfinder play session casts ;)
a pre-session of character generation to organize party roles, and adjust charcters to fill roles , back story, would also be an interesting listen.

Steel Wind,
(tangent) Who does the Red Wine and V song at the end of Chronicles?
The same band that does the intro music - High Rise Circus. They are a band from the West Coast, originally from the SF Bay area. The same lineup has been known under a few other names, but at the time those tracks were recorded - High Rise Circus was and continues to be their current name.
The intro track is called Snow Blind, the outro, obviously Red Wine and Vicodin. Neither have been released and the only place you'll find Red Wine and Vicodin is on the podcast - to my knowledge, at least.

Highrise Circus are some very talented friends of mine! No longer performing live, they continue to write and produce music via virtual studios scattered across Northern California. Although RW&V is not on their 2008 release, you might want to check out what is...
We're extremely pleased to share it with you on the podcast!

Hate to Necro a thread this old, but it's better than making a new one right?
I'm looking for some actual play video or audio to show to someone that hasn't had the pleasure of taking part in, or witnessing how RPGs are played (their best guess was something like WoW).
Are there any new options available now?

THIS thread here has a group of guys that did a few podcasts of their game sessions. Its a pretty good listen, I was curious to see how others played the game.

I am currently recording a Pathfinder play podcast for RPGMP3.com. The first three episodes are available here, and more will be posted in the coming weeks:
http://www.rpgmp3.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=69
There are other folks doing Pathfinder play podcasts there as well. The Strand Gamer group is doing the Kingmaker and Serpent's Skull adventure paths:
http://www.rpgmp3.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=64
There are lots of other gaming groups there recording play sessions of other systems as well, included D&D 4e, 3.5, Call of Cthulhu, and many more.
PLEASE NOTE: Some of the podcasts at that site feature adult language.

Although not a Pathfinder podcast, if you are looking to hear a variety of AP's, check out RPPR. Role Playing Public Radio. Often very profanity-laden, but I think they do a pretty decent job of AP's (and I happen to like their non-AP podcast - it has exposed me to some other games of interest and they address some things that may cross GM's minds on occasion.
I do have to say though, Steel Wind's podcast is awesome. Best I have listened to. (As far as gaming is concerned... I find the Naked Scientist's podcast extremely informative and I enjoy a variety of CBC Ideas podcasts as well)

We have recently added the podcast hosts' Kingmaker campaign to Justin.tv. It's live on Thursday nights at 9:30 p.m. EST. We are currently about 2/3rds of the way through Kingmaker Vol III: Varnhold Vanishing. Azmyth is the GM of that campaign.
The video episodes are available for viewing at any time you want and remain on the server for about a week - so you can watch whenever you like. We record the game with cams on the battlemat, so you get to see the "action" as well as listen to it.
Unlike our podcasts, these are unedited examples of live play. So it's raw, (frequently boring), and always explicit. We swear -- often -- and it's adult fare. Don't put the speakers on if the kids are nearby and blame ME for for my potty mouth. You were warned!
Starting on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at about 2:00 p.m. EST, we will be beginning the Carrion Crown AP, also on Justin.tv roght from the start with Mickeal Kortes' Carrion Crown Vol i: The Haunting of Harrowstone. So if this AP is of interest to you, you can watch from the very beginning, as it were. The plan for that campaign is to play it using d20Pro - so we'll be recording the screen output from d20Pro -- instead of a cam on the battlemat - as part of the feed.
And, if matters unfold as we expect they soon will, we may soon be adding Legacy of Fire to the Justin.tv feed, too. If we do, that will go live on Friday nights with cams on the battlemat. Check our website for more details as they become available.
In all cases, the audio of the actual play of the campaign is also being recorded. of course.
The Chronicles: Pathfinder Podcast Justin.TV channel is -- for now at least -- http://www.justin.tv/grumpygm

The Beer and Battle Podcast! We've been releasing for years now, so there's plenty of content. The current episodes are running Pathfinder as well as the previous 83 episodes. It might not be safe for work, as it gets raunchy at times.
I dare say that when Peter Hicks is the DM, which is most of the time, I think he's the best DM I've ever played with or heard.
Here is a direct link to the Pathfinder Episodes, or you can search for Beer and Battle in any of your podcast players.
