Which animal companion is the "best" at level 4?

Advice

What do folks think is the best 4th level animal companion? (Since this is the Advice thread, it's fair to assume that "In my opinion..." applies to every response.)

The Ape looks pretty good to me (decent Str, three primary attacks, reach).

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, there's nothing that says that a Large animal companion does or doesn't have reach. Hm.

Are you talking ONLY 4th level, or do you mean once they get their "advancement", cause some don't until 7th.

For example, the Large Cat. My personal favorite. Large size, good physical stats (21Str, 15Dex, 17Con after growth, NOT counting the misc bonuses from being an animal companion), and 4, count 'em, 4 attacks in a charge (thanks to pounce, bite, two claws, rake) followed by a free trip!

Imagine throwing a saddle on your tiger, grabbing a lance (ok, you waste a feat on proficiency) and taking Spirited Charge. You both charge, you slam for a crapton of damage, and he just mauls the target for four hits, then he trips it. IF it survives, it takes AOOs when getting up, too. Yeah, large cat seems pretty darn awesome.

Ape is fun too, don't get me wrong. I spent a good while reading people argue for pages and pages about how they could, theoretically, be given proficiency with a greatclub and go to town for some serious damage. I once played a 3.5 game where I threw a saddle on my ape companion and had him carry me around until I got Wildshape...I was a mobile artillary unit, lol.

I'm talking specifically at level 4. I have an Animal domain cleric (in PFS play); I'll probably end up taking the feat Boon Companion at level 5, but I don't know if she'll ever make it to level 7.

I agree that the Large Cat is a good one; I have a gnome druid with a Large Cat companion.

I'd say it depends on your game and what you want your companion to do. I'm currently playing a Druid with an Owl companion, and it's great for aerial reconnaissance and communication with party members and NPCs that are outside of the immediate area. The owl's not so good with combat, but for our campaign, it's working out splendidly!

Level 4? I'm definitely going to have to go with the Horse. By level 4 you can have Mounted Combat, Ride-by Attack and Spirited Charge if your a human druid. Non-proficient Lance Charges!

Boo. My post got eaten, here's the short version.

Small cat: Trip is nice, but it's a little low on damage. Still a decent pick.

Horse (or camel or...elasmosaurus?): Nice for a mounted specialist, although mobility is limited in a dungeon, IMO. My cleric won't be a mounted specialist.

Constrictor snake: Notable for a powerful single attack (bite+grapple = 2d4+20). Ape is slightly better if it hits with all 3 attacks (3d6+18).
