I've searched the forums for this topic to avoid a repost, and I couldn't locate anything directly to it, so I'll just ask those experts out there.
Alrighty, according to the rules, if you pick an archetype for a class, you cannot pick another archetype that alters or replaces the same ability. I get that part. But I am looking for a rules interpretation.
In this particular instance, I have a question about the Winter Witch archetype and the Cartomancer witch archetype.
It says that if you want to play as a winter witch, you must choose a familiar that is native to the frozen north, then gives some examples of what to pick. The rule also goes on to say that if you get the improved familiar feat, that the witch can select any familiar she desires, save for familiars with the fire subtype.
Does this count as altering the familiar ability, or is it a restriction? Or, because it has a restriction, it is considered altering it anyway?
The cartomancer completely replaces the familiar, and none of the other abilities overlap.
I was hoping to tell one of players that she could play a winter witch cartomancer, but if I allow it, I don't want to break the rules for other players that may ask for combinations that replace multiple abilities.
What do you guys think?

Hi Torbyne, thanks for responding.
Harrow decks are used extensively in Varisia. Varisia shares a border with Irrisen, where the winter witches are from. Concept wise, I am inclined to allow it as the character has one parent from each nation - but going strictly by the rules as written, I am not sure.
