You could...put it back yourself? :) For my game it's hard enough getting players to care about SP and CP, let alone EP.

Try checking the weight on their coinage sometime.
Most PCs I know are walking around with 60 lbs or more in coinage. That's why I try to use gems if I don't have a more permanent safe place for my PC wealth.

I did a campaign once where the silver piece was the central unit of currency. Changing in silver for gold cost money, etc.
And honestly it didn't work for very long before the pc's had way more gold than the local village silver economy could withstand.
If i were to do this now, I would simply exchange the GP amounts on the treasure tables to SP's, etc.
EDIT:
I also support the return of the electrum piece.

Two of the worst things I've done to screw with a party:
- Let them find a dragon's hoard with literally hundreds of gold in value, but only in silver. It was in a massive vault cave (ala Scrooge McDuck from Duck Tales).

- Let them sell all their loot from a dungeon at the local magic shop, gave them gold ingots. They loved the idea of carrying around gold bars in their bags of holding, until they tried to use them, and found out they were embossed with markings of a slave trader (they had traveled a long distance after the transaction, into the heart of a very anti-slave kingdom).
Oh, and I too support bringing back EP. I also am in favor of national currency not always being accepted internationally. I am also in favor of some countries currency being promissory, and thus being far more valuable by weight then raw gold.

Please, bring back the electrum piece.
The electrum piece (e.p.) was worth 5 s.p. (or 1/2 g.p.) in 2nd edition AD&D. Just because it's not officially in the Pathfinder books, doesn't mean you can't add it to your campaign.
A good way to do so is pick a country that's well-known for it's use of e.p.
Likewise, having the PCs find a cache of e.p. in the ruins of an ancient empire could make an interesting treasure: the PCs get back to town, and find out that they have to find a coin collector to purchase the rare coins!
Look up the wiki entry for electrum for some real-world history.

I do this sometimes. It's always funny when they try to pay for stuff and I'm like 'Republic Credits?!??'
over time they've gotten used to who takes what though. and then there's the moneychangers at the temples, mwa ha haa. :)
