You move through the day, occasionally checking the direction. The snow fall thickens a bit, making moving and sighting harder. As always, these arctic days end early, and you continue through the night a bit before looking for some type of shelter for the night. You find a bit of a hillside to put between yourselves and the driving snow, and set up camp.
Vardara |
"I'll take midnight." Caydee grumbles something about reclaiming her role as guide from the healer/cook/linguist/diplomat/friend-of-the-yetis as she goes about setting up camp.
"I'll take the first. so that I can properly sleep afterwards. And do not wake me up unless there is a real emergency."

Initiatives please. Only Ahz and Fubar will be able to act the first round, and only a move or standard action.
Hellefire |
Fubar and Ahz both open their mouths to mention the baby polar bear, when with a *roar* momma polar bear launches herself off the hill you are sheltered behind.
Attacking: (random in alpha order A-C-F-K-R-V) 1d6 ⇒ 2 Caydee
Attack Roll(counts as a charge): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25
Damage Roll: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Attempt to hold Caydee down with its paw (CMB-20 grapple check):
CMB 15-20 = roll-5 vs Caydees CMD of (looks like 16?)
1d20 - 5 ⇒ (20) - 5 = 15
Roll to check for success due to natural 20 (effectively the first roll of my crit system, needs a natural 14 or higher):
1d20 ⇒ 5
*Note*: That preceding probably wasn't following the actual rules, as I still don't use grapple much I still have to look everything up 5 times. It probably couldn't have held the grapple anyway, as it is impossible to get a 16 with a d20-5, but since it got a natural 20 I gave it a chance.
The bear hits Caydee squarely in the chest, raking her with its huge paw. She takes 9 points of damages and is knocked to the ground, but manages to roll out from under the bear before it can ring its full weight down to pin her.
Caydee you are lying on the ground next to the bear.
Fubar: Surprise round action = you get a move or a standard action. You can charge with a standard action and move up to your normal speed and attack if you wish, and you do still have your daily weapons out. This will give you +2 to hit and -2 on your ac until your next turn. Or you can roll 1d6, and on a 1 you are next to the bear anyway and may attack normally (on a 2 you're next to Caydee, on a 6 you are next to both).
Ahz: Same roll to determine if you are adjacent to either the bear or Caydee (1 you're next to the bear, 2 next to Caydee, 6 next to both).
Hellefire |
Fubar charges the bear, smacking it on the nose and doing 8 points of damage.
Ahz moves over to Caydee.
Caydee, sorry but according to the core rules you cant use stealth if the enemy can already percieve you through any sense. And you'd have to wait until your turn, but yeah, sorry, you cant do that.
Its the bear's turn, maybe, still waiting for Robbo's initiative. I'll wait a day for that then get on with it. By the way, new guys, we have a basic understanding that if someone doesnt show up for a couple days we go on, either without them or with the DM running them.
Hellefire |
KD, your arsenal of weapons is still in various sheathes attached to your body, and your bow is lying on the ground next to you. You ahve the prone position (-4 on melee attack, -4 on ac vs melee attack, move action which allows attack of opportunity to stand, can crawl 5' as a move action, also allows attack of opportunity). Just for reference when it gets to your turn.

Mamma bear turns to the guy that just hit her and attacks...
Fubar current AC 18 due to charge -
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
to hit: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Grab/grapple (15, vs CMD 18 looks like): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
..and rakes her claws across Fubars ribs, then bites down on his shoulder, causing a total of 20 points of damage. She also grabs him into a bear hug.
initiative order:
bear
Krill
Caydee
Vardara
Fubar
Ahz
Caydee Brunland |
"Damn this," Caydee sighs miserably, more at the massive misunderstanding then the pain from the bear's attack. She stands up as quickly as she can and picks up her bow to shoot the bear who's intent on mauling her friend. "Ahz, some help for Fubar'd be nice!"
roll to hit 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Hellefire |
Caydee, standing takes a move action and picking up you bow takes another move action, which doesn't leave any extra actions for firing. Because you can't fire anything but a crossbow from a prone position, I am going to assume you use your actions to stand up, and to pick up your bow. Note that you are still standing next to the bear.
Free actions - always a question of whether or not you can perform them when it is not your turn, including for speaking, etc. Because I am going to rule on this that the bear cannot take a free action to release the grapple, I am going to stick with that ruling from now on - which means that you can only take free actions on your turn. Because the bear has the grappled condition, it does nto get attacks of opportunity, and cannot attack Caydee when she stands up. I considered allowing it the option of releasing the grapple on Fubar to take a swipe at Caydee, but because of the Free Action decision it cannot.
Caydee stands, and quickly reaches down to pick up her bow and knocks an arrow.
Vardara lets out an icy scream and charges, swinging her maul with ease....
I can't seem to find a rule for attacking someone involved in a grapple, though I think there at least used to be one. But since I can't find anything at the moment...
...and connects squarely with the shoulder of the bear, at which time there is a loud 'SNAP' and the bear's roar is almost defening.
Fubar, you're up!
Hoppin' Robbo |
"Holy smokes! Where'd that bear come from?" yells Robbo!
Running over to the fray, joining Ahz in his efforts to keep the big warrior alive. Muttering the words as he runs over, he places his hand on Fubar's back and completes the spell.
Cure Light Wounds on Fubar: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Hellefire |
The mamma bear, in a rage, decides to hug Fubar...tight...while biting down on his shoulder again...
grapple:1d20 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21
roll to fumble:1d20 ⇒ 15
damage:1d6 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
...almost loses her grip, but manages to hold on and chews another 11 points out of Fubars hide. (thats 20-10+11 = 21 current damage)
Krill, you're up!
Hellefire |
Krill throws a mighty punch which might have broken the skull of a human, but it seems to glance off the polar bears thick hide.
Not sure if you meant you counted grappled condition or I should, but either way you don't quite hit. In the future, to avoid any confusion, count your conditions, etc and I'll deal with the enemies conditions, etc. I assume the extra +2 you applied was for flanking. On the plus side, because you tried to grapple the bear last turn, you are next to it, and only need a 5' step to flank it across from Vardara. Because of this, if you want to turn that into a flurry attack and did not because you did not think you had a full round attack available, feel free to make your extra attack (on the other hand, if you simply took a single attack for accuracy, then let it stand).
Caydee, you're up!
