New Posts for Listed Threads

Sovereign Court

I have listed a bunch of threads I'm interested in following, and I know some of them have died off a bit, but for the last couple weeks, I've seen that none of them have had any new posts added, and decided to check on one today that I know was a pretty constant thread, due to constant updating and bug reports for an Excel-based character sheet. I checked and noticed there were probably a few hundred new posts in there than when I last looked, but there was no indication of that on my list page. Has this function been removed, or is there some kind of bug with it?

Thanks.

Today there are no (x new) posts on any of the topics I have checked out before. Just thought I would let someone know.

We had some problems this morning with the servers that store the x new and dots. The dots and new posts counts should return gradually over the next few days.

Thanks, Gary. It is working because it showed your post as (1 new).

Have I publicly appreciated Gary yet today?

Not that Gary's lacking for work or anything, but is there anything on the site like a bookmark feature?

What I'm looking for is a single page where it would list all of the threads I've visited. Often, even if there are new posts since the last time I visited, I wouldn't see that info without actually going into each subcategory directly, since they're no long in the top 5-10 most recently posted to threads.

Such a thing would be really cool :)

Yeah, I call that feature "global focus" and as soon as I can figure out how to do it without killing the site performance-wise I'll build it.

Until then you can use the focus link in any individual subforum to see threads you've recently viewed or posted in.

Ah yes .. the wonderful world of web design.

If you don't mind my asking, is the back end Java-based, or is it all something like PHP or straight CGI? Seeing the WebObjects up there in the URL makes me think Java ...

What we did under similar circumstances (back when I worked at a web company and not an embedded systems place) was to cache specific users' requests at the tomcat level, each of which was just a list of references to second-level objects.

So in this case a given user might end up with their list of threads cached (best case just a list of integers, i.e. thread numbers), and each entry in the list would be a reference to the underlying thread. I'm guessing those are cached already, so it would only be a matter of storing one list per user in the web tier. I think we kept 'em around for 5-10 minutes or so before dropping them.

For us it was personalized searches for baseball tickets and individual ticket offers, but it's a similar kind of thing.

But that's all just guesswork on my part :)

Me not am seeing anything wrong with me messages.

Gary, I just made my first list and I was wondering: are threads added to a list are supposed to get dots?

If not, it would be nice if they did. There's a couple PbPs I enjoy reading, but I don't want to just but in so I can get a dot for easy reading.

Also, is there a way to tell the boards to stop following a thread for us? Sometimes I'll pop into a topic because the title is interesting, but I'll decide that I don't want to follow it. Seeing the "x new" (or even a dot) after such a thread is kind of annoying when just scrolling thru for updates.

They should but it's possible it's not working. I'll investigate when I get a chance.

There isn't currently. I'm a little leery of adding more stuff to click on so I'll have to think about this a bit so we can avoid extra visual clutter.
