Sorcerer Bloodlines and +1 Arcane Caster Level from Prestige Classes

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

I've performed multiple searches and ran across dozens of threads on this topic, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer.

I'm looking at creating a fey-bloodline sorcerer/rogue/arcane trickster for a new campaign. As a rogue 3/sorcerer 4/ arcane trickster 5 (caster level 9) - do I gain the fleeting glances bloodline power? The same question applies to the bloodline bonus spell received at 9th level.

Personally, I see the bloodline power as part of your magical heritage and whenever your caster level improves, then you would gain the bonuses associated with your heritage. I recognize the argument that bloodline powers are an aspect of the "Sorcerer" class, but I think the wording is misleading if that is what was intended.

Thanks,

Ed

Bloodline powers are class features of the sorcerer, so unless otherwise noted you do not gain them nor progress in them when taking levels in a PrC.

I believe that you would only gain the bonus spells known, as you gain spells known and spells per day as if you had advanced in the sorcerer class.

That said I would pose to your DM that the arcane trickster was weak in 3.5, and with the rogue increased in power (with feat equivalents every even level) that they are even weaker in Pathfinder and see if he would increase them a bit.

You can use the Dragon Disciple as an example, it's the only official PrC that explicitly advances Bloodline Powers, since no other PrC in the corebook grants a similar power, you can't just assume it does.

Considering that I just read a 30+ post thread on why Arcane tricksters suck in Pathfinder, I think I'll just pass on that prestige class. My GM is open to old WotC content like the Unseen Seer and Daggerspell mage, so I may go down that road instead.

Or even stick to a straight rogue, they were greatly buffed in Pathfinder and the sorcerer received no such love - they still have the problem of no social skills as class skills. My intention to multiclass as sorcerer was largely for the RP possibilities of the Fey bloodline.

My personal ruling as GM would be for it to progress with ALL character levels. The bloodline is part of your character after all, and it's not like it's going to go dormant if you pick up a level of fighter or rogue. But hey, that's just me

Considering the sorcerer is just spells + bloodline, I wouldn't allow bloodline to increase without an increased level in sorcerer (or prestige class that explicitly allows stacking). If you did otherwise, then there would be no reason to stay sorcerer (a problem that existed for both sorcerer and wizard in 3.5).

Although I would like more prestige class options for different bloodlines, and possibly one that is generic to all sorcerer bloodlines (stacks for bloodline, lose 3 caster levels, gives some other benefit universal to bloodlines).
I want an Aberrant Champion prestige class :P

The biggest problem with AT is dealing with multiple levels of being mediocre when you have weak casting and low Sneak Attack. If you are building your character as rogue 3/sorcerer 4/ arcane trickster 5 from go you skip over the really bad parts.

As to your original Q, you don't progress anything save casting in your sorcerer class.

Bloodline powers do not advance. +1 CL is the number of spells you gain and you caster level not class ability. The bloodline is a class ability of the sorcerer unless a PRC says it advances it {dragon disciple} then it does not. If ya notice the DD only advances 1 bloodline. the dragon bloodline
