OK, help I want to make bender classes

Homebrew and House Rules

I love the Nicktoon Avatar The Last Airbender (I hope the movie does not ruin it) I want to make a class that bends the elements, I don't think that they have to be completely different from one another, but maybe just have a interchangeable abilities, but use different elements. Of course as the levels get higher the abilities would get more different from one element to another. (ex. at 1st level each would get a d6 dmg dealer AKA elemental blast, but then by 5th lvl. Earth benders can make a rocky shell on their body, and maybe an air bender can walk on air) different but elementally related...Thoughts?

Not at all what I thought through the title.

On the other hand, I could have sworn I have seen another thread talk about this, or something very related.

Very interested in this very project.

Will have some more input when on real computer

If anything i am feeling like a cross between the monk and the elemental Bloodline from sorc.
With the monks BAB progression and save mods
thena mix and match of their abilities with the sorc bloodline

Silver Crusade

I wonder if a psionics-like power point system my be appropriate here.

Or something like the rage points system with numerous bending power options to buy each level(2,1,2,1, and so on maybe).

There are many posts about making elemental benders on the WotC forums. Some really great stuff. I think there is also a site that put together a rules set. (you can google it... avatar d20 classes or something like that.)

I would make a variant Sorcerer class, I think. I would stay away from the Psionic point system. I just don't think that it is necessary to make different systems for essentially spellcasting.

I would probably do something similar to the Battle Sorcerer class variant in the old Unearthed Arcana, then create bloodlines for the four elements.

Just a thought.

I was really hoping this would be a thread about larcenous, alcoholic robots.

Sorry, that is in the Eberron Thread... ^_^

I actually started working on an idea like this over a year ago for personal use. I used the Warlock as a base, but replaced their list of invocations and gave a thematically appropriate replacement for eldritch blast (which was pretty much- fire damage for fire, plus a free "brimstone blast" burning effect, cold damage from a stream of water that also puts out fires, bludgeoning damage with a blast of wind with an accompanied bull rush, and either a relatively large rock thrown as a projectile or a blast of rocks from below, with the latter having a trip attempt attached to it). I had only finished the list of Least Invocations, sadly, because it was during a time that I had no means to play D&D. I would gladly start the project up again, if the folks here on the boards would be interested in such a thing.

For a simple build of the ____ bender type classes, I think I'd start with the monk, strip out most of the abilities gained from level progression, and replace them with bard-type spellcasting. With elementally-limited spell lists, I think you'd have a pretty decently balanced class.

Wow....thank you! We have started playing most of our games as gestalt and this thread just gave me inspiration....monk/warlock! That IS a bender.

For a good long while there was a fairly large project to make the benders from Avatar over of the GitP forums. They looked really good from what I remember, I'll post a link as soon as I can find it.

This rule set is very well developed...

Or Eric here can beat me to the punch. That's what I get for going to make food before doing a search on the internet.

I think maybe using the swordsage tome of battle method of near 4th edition but not quite per encounter power moves that progress through level. I think though that there would have a lot done to make waterbenders relevant, and i think earthbending would be broken as it is displayed in the show, not by damage per se but battlefield control.
I would like to help very much with this, as a fellow avatar the last air bender.

If we have a bender class, we need a monk / druid crossover ; Marebenders... heeh

I agree the swordsage is good place to start (heck some of the desertwind(?) styles are great for fire benders already) Water benders who were good enough at their bending could pull water out of the air.

I have had this problem to of wanting a bender style class i was originaly goin to try a wu jen style conversion but it ended up a little to much like a staight mage with fire/cold spell. i Have found the tome of battle style classed the best base mechanics to use and have done a few write ups when i finish my class i will put it up and see how everyone likes it
