Never baked any potatoes before and I have 2 in the frig. I'd like some help on the how tos.

wash
poke with fork several times
3 to 5 mins in the microwave on high
eat

small potatoes stop at three minutes to check for proper softness
large potatoes stop at 4 minutes to check

you can always put it back in for another 30 seconds or 1 minute if it's too hard

Surely, that's not the conventional way to bake a potato?

Thanks CJ, that's a big help.

it's pretty conventional, just not convectional.

they are tastier if baked in an oven... marginally.

And they soften more consistently

If you are gonna use the microwave at least roll them in olive oil and apply some salt and pepper to the outside for flavor.

Set oven to 400, poke with a fork a bunch of times, slather it in olive oil, salt and pepper, then rap it in aluminum foil, cook it for an hour, or until the inside is tender.

I use olive oil on the inside, too. i'm not a butter man.

Yeah, me too....or sometimes Ranch dressing. Something about that combo really does it for me. Weird, huh? Sometimes I don't even open them up, just pick it up and start gnawing away. The salt, pepper and oil is usually plenty good enough for flavor.

To help evenly cook them, you can also run a metal skewer through them and poke fewer holes with the fork. As they bake, the skewer conducts the heat and helps cook from within.

Also, you can cook off a whole bag of them and keep the ones you're not eating tonight in the fridge. They should be good for 4-7 days, and then you can just nuke them for a few minutes. But, they are always better fresh from the oven.

Awwww, you just looked that up! No fair cheater!

I always use plastic wrap or the potato bag my son made for me when using the microwave. Works fine.

Depending on the size of the potato, wrap in foil (dull side out) bake at 350 for about an hour until soft in the center. Poke with fork to test tater after an hour, if still hard bake for another half hour.

If you happen to have any 16 penny nails or six inch long iron wood screws stick one into the potato half way in and then bake. The nail will heat up and cook the potato from the inside cutting the cooking time to about 45 min.

hmmm... I am not sure why an oven? I usually just throw the foil-wrapped potato in last night's coals.

Potatoes are very bad for you. Do not eat. Try Sweet potato fritters instead.

There is only one kind of potato I hate; sweet potatoes.

And since when are potatoes bad for the body? Or are you being facetious?

Sweet potato fritters are not facetious. They are pure buttery fact.

Fine then. Poison your body with standard potatoes. It's your life.

LOL. I am yanking your chain. The whole time. I love potatoes and I hate sweet potatoes too. ;-)

Ummmm, I mean, wait, how dare you call my mom nasty!!!!

Nasty as eggplant.

Leftover baked potatoes make awesome gnocchi.

Sovereign Court

Once you have mastered baked potatoes you can move on to put-back potatoes.

Or
Mash up leftover baked potatoes and turn them into thin little pancakes and fry them in bacon grease the next morning.

Ok so who's in favor or taking your leftover baked potatoes aned turning them into twice baked potatoes?
Ya just take out the potatoe guts mix it with bacon bits or cooked sausage, some sour cream or butter(your choice) a little liquid like milk or chicken broth, mix it all together put it back in the potatoe skin and rebake for about 10-15 minutes top with pepper jack cheese and call it good, or am I the only weird on on this thread that does stuff like that?

No, you're not the only weird one. We can be weird together (and I can be ultraweird, since I use fake sausage in mine).

Also, for the record, I hate sweet potatoes almost as much as anyone, but have you guys ever tried oven baked sweet potato fries? Seriously, they're addicting. Only way I'll ever eat the things. In fact, I'm getting a sweet potato fry craving right now, and no sweet potatoes..... darn!

EDIT: Just gotta say, this is one of the best threads ever. Utilitarian to the max!

Sovereign Court

Sweet potatoes are awesome and very healthy for you, much more so than normal potatoes! Anyone who doesn't like them is a fascist commie who probably kicks puppies.

I'm just shocked Daigle [from Texas] didn't immediately suggest deep-frying them!

Step 1) Put a hole in the box

Silver Crusade

Have you seen those little individually wrapped microwavable potatoes? You put them in the microwave exactly as is and they come out well. No substitute from the oven-baked variety, I know, but in a pinch, they make the whole affair very easy.

<stoner> duuuuuude, my potatoes are half-baked. pass the cheetos. </stoner>

That's the only way I eat them.

Liberty's Edge

In the summer, I like to microwave them until they are soft enough, then toss them on the barbeque for a few minutes. Turn them to toast all sides, then enjoy! Fire makes them good.
