Anyone have some ideas as to which world culture would connect to the city of Korvosa? Just looking for flavor and cultural concepts.
Thanks.

I'm guessing late medieval/ early rennaisance-reformation italy, especially Rome and Venice?

I based mine on the french riviera, which does have a bit of an italian feel. Also try Croatia, it has a good feel.

It may sound silly (especially in comparison to the other answers), but definitely New York City.
A colonial city, an island, taken from the shamanistic natives and more I just don't have the time to detail.
But, the general architecture may match more northern styles than the Italians.

The other good thing about New York -- and Long Island -- is that they were areas where Loyalists concentrated. When looking at various colonial histories for Korvosan inspiration, I'd look for old colonial cities that were loyal to the empire in question, and frowned on revolutionaries. Law and order! The crown!

I watched 'Gangs of New York' in preparation for running

I watched 'Gangs of New York' in preparation for running For example. Great Edge of Anarchy, and later Old Korvosa feeling. But Escape from New York is fitting as well.

I've been thinking more Byzantine...
A cosmopolitan city with Slavic "barbarians", gypsies, etc.

Its kind of out of the way to be fabled Constantinople, but it could easily be a far flung provincial city. If you know your history, and geography, Trapezous/Trebizond might be a better connection. Perhaps utilize some Armenian culture for the Shoanti.

We are going with a similar post Roman feel but would lean more to Ravenna.

My impression of Korvosa was always Dickensian London...maybe that's just because the PCs start out tangling with a darker and edgier version of F agin. (Seriously, auto-censor? A well-known character from a famous and prolific author, and I can't write his name out because of the first three letters?)
