Are you talking about "brutalist style" architecture? Usu. poured concrete; all those old office and government buildings that looked like a good place to film a Dr. Who episode in the 70's.
It was used in a lot of those buildings, but as an interior finish. It tends to be off-white or beige, often in big tiles. It looks like it was once a smooth surface, but years later it always winds up looking like swiss cheese...

I always liked travertine. There are some travertine walls on the SMU campus, which surprisingly works okay with the Georgian architecture.
