Advanced Player's Guide Playtest General Discussion

Two polls

1. (for those who have play tested all classes) Which new class works the best (not ness most powerful or cool or what not)

2. For anyone, which new class do you like the most and hate the most (you do not have to state why)

1. I have playtested the summoner, oracle and cavalier. I love the cavalier and summoner. Both classes seem to do their job well. The oracle I am on the fence about the oracle. It is very easy to make a poor oracle. It requires alot of thinking to make a good one, and the good ones in my opinion are the battle/combat oriented oracles. Which is kind of off for a primary casting class. There definately needs to be additions to the spells lists, and I'd like to see a more direct structure for the Foci, like sorceror bloodlines, instead of pick and choose.

2. My favorite has to be the summoner so far. Though I am hoping i get to try out the inquisitor soon. I dont really hate any of the classes, but I think the witch oracle, and alchemist need some work.

1. Haven't tested them all.

2. Really like the Inquisitor. Funny, because before the playtest, that was the one that I was least excited about. Don't like the summoner. I just don't like having a minion being your primary focus. I don't like the leadership feat either, for what ever that's worth.. It should be noted that this is based of off just reading them through, not actually playtesting them.

1)I'm play testing the summoner right now, i love it, the possibilities are countless.

2) i don't really care for the caviler, nothing wrong with it, i just don't care. i've never been a fan of such classes (i don't even like the paladin).

1. Cavalier funnily enough... it was the one I wasn't so happy with on paper so to speak.

2. Witch or Alchemist... it's a toss up between those two.

I like the inquisitor (though I'm disappointed it's more of a Van Helsing class then it is an interrogator/seeker of truth) the most.

I like the cavalier the least. Tying him to a mount limits his ability. I've rarely had the opportunity to really do mounted combat.

1...Haven't playtested them all yet.

2...Looking forward to playing the summoner, though I'm more looking forward to running an alchemist against my group of PCs.

1. I felt the Summoner, Oracle, Cavalier and Inquisitor were the best classes right out of the gate. Their class abilities are (I feel) very balanced.

2. I am addicted to playing the Witch. It is everything I've ever wanted in a witch, it is what I think of when someone says witch. There are MAJOR problems with the mechanics of this class (I feel it's underpowered), but the class's flavor is SO GOOD that it just doesn't phase me anymore. I don't think the Oracle's powers reflect the class very well (except for their Curse, that is great), EVERYONE in my playing group thought the Alchemist was a booster, but instead it's the worst self-booster ever, and the I didn't like how the Inquisitor is actually a monster hunter. But, I really do like them all.

Playtested a Cavalier (trying to put together an Oracle). Love the Oracle and the Witch; hate the Summoner.

I'll tell you by monday -- I'm running an adventure featuring two witches and their charmed cavalier "minion" today.

On paper I like them all (maybe the summoner and the inquisitor most), but I think the cavalier needs some work (too much overlap between certain Order benefits, oaths and class features; and, all too few oaths to my taste in general).

I love the Witch

I myself have not been able to play since summer and I'm itching too.So I cannot say about playtesting. As for what I've read I would say that I like the witch,Oracle,Alchmist and cavalier in idea, but only the witch comes close to being good (still needs work though)
The others I feel are weak in overall concept esp the Inquisitor.

I've had all six make a test entry as vilains.

The summoner wiped the party pretty handilly. Not just due to having a very nasty animal Eidolon (but it was pretty powerful) but becuase they were partially crippled just fighting their way in.

The lame half orc Oracle of battle impaled the wizard with a trident before having two half orc monks kick the crap out of her.

The Cavlier wiped out the sorcerer and wizard, but was choked to death by the halfling barbarian.

The witch ate magic missiles very early in the fight. probably the downside to having a sorcerer, a wizard and a bard in a party

The alchemist drank a mutagen (+2 dex +2AC), drank an extract of shield, and threw vials of acid loaded with point blank shot. The wizard grabbed a freaking halberd and used hand of the apprentice to get the agile little bugger. if not for a natural 20 I think that may have been another kill.

The inquisitor of callistria had a grand time with the offhand whip, before being knocked out and returned to the church.

All In all, at low levels (1-5) the PC's were as successful as you would expect them to be (IE closely matched and a genuine fear of loss). A Natural 20 prevented the defence optimised alchemist from triumphing, and the fight with the eidolon was over in 2 hits due to the PC's being pretty poor temple raiders rather than falling in fair combat.

I like the functioning of the oracle, though why anyone would take any curse other than 'tounges' is beyond me. I'm fond of the inquisitor, which is what i was after as far as another skill guy.

1. Sadly playtesting is for others; I saw a summoner at one of my tables at PFS, and dunno why the rest of the party showed up. Of course, that was pre-nerf; so I can't even comment too much on that.

2. I like the Cavalier; and unlike the stating, I believe it's good no matter what (Halflings and Gnomes on riding dogs make excellent dungeon chargers). Good option if you want to be a precision-damage type Paladin. I don't like the Summoner; even if it's properly fixed, I hate classes that spam more minis onto the board. I think they actually made them worse summoners than mages/bards/druids though (basically they are an eidilion with the occasional summon now? Can only have out 1 at a time, and no mins/level?) Regardless, too much miniture upkeep; fine for those who are REALLY on the ball, bad for the other 95% of gamers.

Just some quick thoughts after running half of the playtest adventure mentioned above... the PCs creamed an equal-level witch and her ogre "minions" without taking ANY damage. It was a combination of good tactics and a series of great Ref saves plus 'Protection from Evil' on everyone and I had mostly selected mind-affecting spells for the witch.

The cavalier ALMOST took out the paladin he challenged, and seemed a genuine threat (at times) when he was mounted and could charge. However, he would need several cavalier buddies to support him; in my opinion "mere" fighters or warriors did not play together well with his abilities (or they should have been mounted). An inquisitor would have been a better choice for a "villain" in this particular adventure than a cavalier. In retrospect, I should have stuck to using Ride-By Attack and Overrun only, and forgot about full-attack. Also, the flanking bonus everyone gets against cavalier is something I'd like to see tweaked a bit -- if the group has a rogue, it may turn into a pretty one-sided fight.

Anyway, I'll post a "real" report of these encounters in a couple of days.

I have playtest the summoner, and I will do the witch this weekend.

Summoner: Pounce is to cheap, and it gets to many attacks at low levels. I dont might it getting magic items. As far as armor it should be made so that only each type of armor proficiency should be a separate purchase, and the higher the armor proficiency purchased the lower your natural armor bonus is allowed to be from evolution purchases. The summoning is ok. I think SLA active at a time will work pretty well.

I have made my witch, and it seems(without actually playing it) to be slightly behind the sorcerer and the wizards. I still don't like the idea of a walking spellbook, so if I ever use one in a game I will have scrolls of those spells.

The cavalier is meh. The oracle and cavalier, I dont care for. The ideas are intriguing, but the mechanics are not desirable. The Inquisitor should probably be more of a martial character than it is.
