"Aye, i'm with ya, brighteyes"

Liberty's Edge

Going back to the stairway you make your way up to the top, just above the level of the roof of the surrounding room. The stairs lead to a hallway that heads west and ends in another stairway that goes back down. From the top of the stairs you can just barely make out a larger room below.

Updated Map with slightly assumed party order.

Sorry for the long absence! Internet problems gave way to computer problems - all at the busiest time of year work-wise. But I'm caught up at the moment, so time to get back into the game! I'll just backtrack a bit.

Manduzi Steelsong wrote:
"I think We're all okay." He starts as he places a hand on the broad shoulders of the dwarf."Thanks to you that is, Mr. Ironhame." He clarifies with a firm grip on Drosk's shoulder, hoping to strengthen the resolve of his stout friend.

"My thanks, lad," Drosk says with a weary grin. "If that last bit of Torag's holy might hadn't taken care of that shadow-thing, I don't know what we would have done."

The dwarf looks at the others. "If we run into any more creatures like that, I'm afraid I won't be much help. I used up the last of Torag's blessing that I can channel for today. I still have a few spells left, but they won't be much help against the restless dead. But I'm willing to keep pressing on - we need to see to poor Dimiria. How about those stairs?" With a grim set to his shoulders, the priest hefts his shield and warhammer as he marches with his companions to the stairs leading up out of the beetle's lair.

Naria carefully heads down the stairs keeping her eyes ears open for trouble

Perception

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Liberty's Edge

Naria creeps down the stairs to peek into the room.

The south half of this lofty chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing against the southern wall is a tall wooden statue of Kassen grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand. One of the shields is inscribed with the word “home,” while the other reads “family.”

There is a door on the north wall, as well as one on the southern wall.

Female Halfling Monk 1

"Just a big wooden statue with some shields." Naria calls to the others

Liberty's Edge

It feels like I'm starting to lose everyone here. I realize the shadow fight slowed things down because of the difficulty in hitting it meaning that a lot of people were passing. Can I get everyone who is still around and active to chime in so I can make sure we haven't lost folks?

Velios follows Naria down the stairs keeping his eyes open for signs of danger. "I would guess the crypt may be beyond this room." He says with a concerned look on his face.

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Male Dwarf Monk 1

Bandar follows Naria and Velios.
"Bah! What does a village dweller know 'bout crypts and bein' underground. The Crypt is this way" Bandar bellows, pointing on the opposite door than Velios.

I'm still here

Liberty's Edge

Looking from the base of the stairs there doesn't appear to be anything to the room beyond the large statue on the lower level and the north and south door. Unlike the other rooms there are no signs of remains, items, or evidence of habitation.

Anyone who is looking around can go ahead and make a knowledge(arcana) check for me, if you meet the DC listed below you can look at the accompanying spoiler.

DC 15

Spoiler:
You recognize the statue as more than that. It has all the trappings of a wood golem.

DC 20

Spoiler:
You know that golems are resistant to almost all magics. However, wood golems are extra injured by fire and fire spells and are slowed by spells that affect wood. They are resistant to damage unless it is from a source that cuts into them.

Drosk warily follows the others down the stairs. Something about the chamber tugs at his memory.

"Those shields... Didn't Roldare say something about needing 'shields and keys?'"

Leaving the knowledge (arcana) check to those who have some ranks in it.

Male Human Rouge/1st

Manduzi will slide into the room, Drawn close with weapon drawn to the statue, the only attraction in the room."Anyone Recognize this fellow?" He asks as he pours over the details.

Might as well try, maybe I'll hit the jackpot.
Knowledge Arcana 1d20 ⇒ 10 Nope, Dang!

"We did find a key in the fire Drosk. Mayeb that has something to do with it."

Liberty's Edge

Manduzi advances towards the large wooden statue, moving down the flight of stairs. As he gets half-way down there is a sudden creak as the statue's head turns slowly to look towards the man approaching him. It takes a sudden step forward with a lurch and ad it does there is a click from beneath it and a matching one coming from the stairway.

Suddenly the steps beneath the rogues feet feel like they drop away, each individual step tilting down at 45 degrees with a thunk to form a slick ramp. The ramp looks like it would be very difficult to scamper back up.

Manduzi, you will slide down to the bottom of the ramp. Its a DC 10 acrobatics check to keep your feet as you go, otherwise you end up prone at the bottom.

The statue appears obviously hostile, its attention currently focused on the rogue at the base of the ramp. I'll need initiative from everyone.

OH NO!

As the stairs under Manduzi's feet give way, Velios sees the statue come to life looking at the rogue. Having to act quickly, Velios jumps from the upper section of the room moving toward the animated creature. "We mean no harm. We are here to collect the Everflame." as he finishes his sentence, Velios rummages through his pack holding forth the lantern.

Manduzi slides confidently down the ramp taking the trap in stride as he flicks his rapier in a wide flourish towards the statue as he stands on the tips of his toes, ready to dodge any incoming blows from the behemoth." Stand aside statue!" he taunts. " You will not deter our quest!"

Total defense this round, +4 ac right?

Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 15

Drosk digs into his backpack, gingerly removes a flask of alchemist's fire, and gently hands it to Naria.

Beilin
Drosk
Naria

Bandar(bottom of the round)
Manduzi
Velios

Manduzi slides to the bottom of the ramp, quickly bringing up his rapier and setting himself at his guard in a protective stance.

Velios drops from the ledge, landing on the ground below hard enough to twist an ankle. He holds up the lantern, but the creature doesn't seem distracted by it or even register the flame.

1d6 ⇒ 4 Falling Damage

Beilin, you are up next followed by Drosk. I haven't heard from Beilin for a bit, so I'll give him til this evening and then I'll post for him to keep things moving.

Is falling damage non-lethal? Off-topic: Tarlane, you still in for the Googlewave game? I know it is moving at a snails pace, he asked for perception checks.

Male Dwarf Monk 1

I'm having some connection problems at the moment. Could you NPC me for a day or two?

Liberty's Edge

Beilin moves out along the upper platform, bringing up his shortbow and firing an arrow towards the large creature.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
1d6 ⇒ 2

The arrow flies out and bounces harmlessly off one of the statue's shields.

Drosk, you are up. Naria, you're on deck. Feel free to post in whatever order is easiest for you.

Here's my move action as posted above (I thought that this would take my whole action, but then realized that retrieving a stored item is just a move action. I still have a standard action, yay!):

Drosk Ironhame wrote:

"That thing is as big as the broad side of a barn, and I probably still couldn't hit it! Here, lass, take this. If that big hunk of wood attacks the lads, toss this at it!"

After making sure that the halfling has received the alchemist's fire safely, Drosk reaches into his pack again to retrieve a flask of oil. "Here mates!" he says to Bandar and Naria, "I'll light this one if that thing attacks, and one of you can throw it next!"

Using my standard action to retrieve the oil flask from the backpack. If the animated wooden statue attacks this round, I will use a full round action next round to get the oil flask lit so that one of the monks can throw it at the statue.

Female Halfling Monk 1

Naria following Drosk's advice takes a ready action to throw the flask if the statue attacks any of them. After an afterthought she shouts to the others "Try not to damage the shields as Drosk says we may need them."

Liberty's Edge

Those of you who have readied action can go ahead and roll your attacks.

The statue stands there, looking at you curiously as several of you begin to light various flames. Suddenly then, it lurches forward towards Manduzi, its shields raising up and readying to swing down at him.

The party's hits resolve first, but assuming the party doesn't bring down the statue immediately it swings both its shields and one of them hits Manduzi for 5 damage.

Male Dwarf Monk 1

"That's right. Burn that thing!" Bandar yells while going for a kick at the statue.

Liberty's Edge

The flaming bottle shatters against the side of the statue, causing a flame to run up the side of the creature. It doesn't seem to notice, showing no signs of feeling pain, though part of its frame obviously chars.

Even as it burns the creature swings each of its shields at Manduzi, wielding the large towershields as if they were weapons. One of them clips him solidly.Doing the damage noted above.

Bandar drops down from the ledge and moves around the creature, not quite able to get to flanking position with Manduzi but close. He delivers a hard kick to its flank but its like kicking a tree for all the injury it seems to cause.

Female Halfling Monk 1

Is the golum still burning?

Liberty's Edge

For the one additional round, as per alchemist fire. It seems to have injured it more than you might have expected, but it doesn't look like it is actually catching on fire and staying that way.

Female Halfling Monk 1

If Naria gets given another oil flask from Drosk she will try to throw it at the statue

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Not sure what kind of damage it would do or if it would just keep the fire going.

Liberty's Edge

I think what I will end up doing is extending the alchemists fire with the oil. So this round would be 1d6 also and the third round would be the 1 point.

Recovering from his ankle injury, Velios brings his guisarme up to strike the wooden creature.

Tarlane wrote:

Per the PF SRD, Alchemist's Fire does an additional 1d6 fire damage on the second round, not just 1 point of damage.

It takes Drosk a full-round action to get the oil flask prepared for throwing. If it hits, there is a 50% chance of the flask igniting successfully for 1d6 points of damage.

Male Dwarf Monk 1

Bandar whirls around and kicks high, coming up with a right fist at the statue.

Liberty's Edge

Ah! So it is. I am not quite sure what I was thinking of, Drosk but thank you for pointing that out to me. I will still go with the same interpretation as above in regards to having the flame last an additional round, but with that it would mean having it be 1d6 for three rounds.

Just waiting for Manduzi right now. If I don't hear from him by tonight I will NPC him. The rest of you can feel free to post your actions if you have an idea of what you are doing and I'll put them in order.

I wanted to apologize for my own silence this weekend. I had a kind of unexpected net outage at home and with the holiday yesterday I wasn't in at work. Hopefully things will be working smoothly again within a couple days, but since I can post from work things shouldn't be further affected.

Going to be posting now as I catch up on all my PbPs.

Liberty's Edge

Manduzi dodges back out of the way of another blow from the statue, ducking under swing and keeping its attention.

Velios moves in as it follows the rogue, cutting deeply into its burning flank and hacking away several hunks of wood.

Beilin advances as well, sliding down the far ramp and narrowly keeping his balance. He moves up, getting just behind Manduzi and preparing to move in and help chip away at the creature.

Drosk hurriedly tears a strip of cloth, shoves it into the opening of the oil flask that he retrieved from his pack the previous round, lights the make-shift wick with his flint and steel, and hands the impromptu incendiary device to Naria to throw at the animated wooden statue.

As posted above, Drosk takes a full-round action to get the oil flask prepared for throwing and hands it off to Naria.

Male The rules don't contain a specific for a mix of all races..... Drafter 20/Father 8

Sorry everyone, I have been out of town and starting a new job. I am going to try and get back on regular posting now. Again, sorry for the silence.

Liberty's Edge

I wasn't sure if Drosk was doing the same thing again, but it works for me and certainly seems to be injuring the thing.

Drosk preps another impromptu incendiary device even as Naria hurls the next flask of oil onto the still burning statue, sending a huge gout of flame up its side. The injuries seem to truly be getting to the thing at this point, and while it shows no signs of pain it does appear to be having more difficulty moving.

The statue continues to follow Manduzi with a one track mindedness, swinging each of its heavy shields, one after the other. The first going far wide, the second batted away but only barely, had the rogue not been as alert and prepared he would have likely taken a mighty blow.

Attempting to make use of the creatures distraction, Bandar sets in two quick blows against the statue. The first bouncing harmlessly off one of its shields, the second thudding against what must have been a reinforced beam and not seeming to injure it.

Manduzi, you are up again. Velios, you are on deck.

Drosk will take the following actions on his next turn:

Rummaging in his backpack, Drosk retrieves one final flask that may be of use against the wooden statue. "I've used up all of the fire I've got," he comments to Naria as he hands her the flask, "let's see what some acid can do to that thing."

Drosk hands Naria a flask of acid to throw at the animated wooden statue. Throwing it is a ranged touch attack that deals 1d6 acid damage on a direct hit. Every creature within 5 feet of the point where the acid hits takes 1 point of acid damage from the splash.

With all of his useful projectiles expended, the dwarf priest hefts his handaxe and shield and moves to the top of the far stairs (location B21), preparing to slide down to join the other combatants on the following round.

I'm afraid that some health issues that looked like they were minor last week spiked up badly enough that it has required some hospital time towards the end of last week. Right now, I'm not totally sure where things stand in that regard, whether I am going to be back on my feet in a relatively short time or if I'm mostly going to be out of comission for a while.

Unfortunately, either way it means I will probably be off the boards for a few weeks at least or maybe longer. There is nothing life threatening for folks to be worried about, but I'm all drugged up while I'm dealing with this and it makes it really hard to put together coherant thoughts(this post has already taken forever to try and make myself focus to get through it).

I've really enjoyed all my PbPs and hopefully you all understand my disapearance and accept my apology.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! I'm sure we'd all be willing to pick the game back up when you feel better (if you still want to continue). I know that I've had a blast with this one.

Get well soon!
