I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but I've seen a few creatures that have the stunning critical feat without having the staggering critical prereq... is that intentional?

For examples, please see ancient red dragon (and implicitly, its older bretheren) or shoggoth.

It's not intentional, but it's hardly game breaking. If you want to actually make them follow the rules, switch the feats to staggering critical or swap out a lesser feat for staggering critical.

Rat Swarm lists Balance as a skill, I assume this should be Acrobatics. I don't see this mentioned in the Errata.

Calculation Errors: Fly and Perception are both +1 too high

This 5 HD large magical beast (2 + Int / HD skill points) has an Int of 5, so it gets 5 skill points.

Calculations should be as follows:

Acrobatics +10 (1 rank, +3 class skill, +2 Dex (15), +4 racial modifier)
Fly +4 (1 rank, +3 class skill, +2 Dex (15), -2 size)
Perception +11 (3 ranks, +3 class skill, +1 Wis (13), +4 racial modifier)

The version in Bestiary 2nd printing is correct (Acro +10, Fly +6, Perc +12; Acro 1 rank, Fly 3 ranks, Perception 1 rank). You forgot to account for the +3 from Skill Focus (Perception).

Okay, thanks, I haven't been following the Bestiary quite as closely and didn't review the errata. (Plus I guess my input is sort of diminished when trying to point out a calculation error, I make one of my own such as not including Skill Focus). I'll try to be more accurate so I don't needlessly waste your time.

Calculation Error: I seem to run out of ranks by the time I get to Stealth and the ranks are too high for Perception & Stealth, over 12 and there are only 12 HD.

12 HD aberration (4 + Int / HD skill points) has an Int of 13 (+1), 60 skill points

Calculations as follows:

Climb +27 (12 rank, +3 class skill, +12 Str(34))

UMD is a class skill in his case, likely. From the Outsider type description: Due to their varied nature, outsiders also receive 4 additional class skills determined by the creature's theme.

Yet several smaller monsters (and giant centipedes, apparently) do indeed use their Dex instead of their Str for Climbing. That's either an error in the Climb skill description or an ability that wasn't mentioned in the individual monster descriptions, as opposed to a skill rank error.

I think that the rule is in 3/3.5 and got accidentially snipped in the conversion to Pathfinder, but is still in effect and being used.

Some monsters explicitly say in the Racial modifiers for skills:

"Racial Modifiers uses Dex to modify Climb and Swim"

but I am still searching to see if/where it is explicitly a feature of tiny and smaller creatures. It appears to be common among swarms and rodents at least.

The phrase "Racial Modifiers uses Dex to modify Climb and Swim" occurs only on the pages:


  • dire rat
  • rat swarm
  • dire rat animal companion stat blocks

So if the rule is an accepted feature of tiny or smaller creatures, its exceptionally well-hidden. Either that or my search-fu sucks lol

A ghoul has no Con so how come +4 on its 2d8 hit dice?
