Down to 9 HP people

You'll have to step into the grease to do this. In moving back and to the side to let you pass, Poltur is stepping further into the grease patch. Do you follow?

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

No I am not following him...nor am I placing my back towards him either.

Revised round 3 moves.

Ewald steps back as Poltur gestures opens a potion bottle then swigs it down..

Cure Mod Wounds2d8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8

Initiative order / Round 3
Eria (23) -- in the hold near the bow -- ACTED
Amanda (23) -- in the hold near the bow
Ewald (22) -- in the hold near the ladder near the bow -- ACTED
Thing in the hold (18) -- behind the ladder near the stern
Liandra (17) -- in the hold near the stern
Galadar (14) -- in the hold
Poltur (8)-- in the hold near the bow
Mimics (8)-- near the bow, in the middle, and near the stern

Dismissing the dancing lights makes the thing in the hold slightly more visible. Galadar and Liandra can see a glowing outline of something catlike. They are also aware of the new threat posed by the ridiculous looking walking crates.

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Noting the walking crate Liandra resists the urge to laugh. Lookig past the glowing feline outline she makes eye contact with Galadar.

"Let's finish this quick."

She srges forward attacking in tandem with him
Attack 1
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7

Attack 2
1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12

Amanda will climb the ladder partway before hooking her arm through to cast a spell, sending a pair of beams toward the walking crates.

Move action: Move up ladder as high as possible in one move

Standard action: Cast Scorching Ray
She will target whichever crate is in front and closest to her; if the first one targeted falls, she will target the next. Otherwise, both rays go to the same crate.

Scorching Ray #1 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Fire damage 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5, 3) = 13

Scorching Ray #2 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Fire damage 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 3, 4) = 13

Oddly symmetrical...

WOW, that's just.....bizarre.

The shimmering leopard like creature in the hold attacks Galadar again.
Before Liandra gets her attack.

The creature attacks with its claws 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 201d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 311d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 81d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Liandra strikes twice and the creature finally succumbs to her blades. It falls to the ground. The shimmering outline breathes shallowly for a bit and then vanishes.

Meanwhile, Amanda has hit one of the odd shapeshifters with two perfectly symmetrical scorching rays.

Down to 16 hp here.

Can I make it over to help Ewald or are there things in the way?

There's a patch of grease in the way on this hold. You could go up and come down the other ladder, of course.

Why only down to 16? I thought you took multiple hits.

You know, I completely missed the last two attacks somehow being at me. I'm at -5 hp.

Just as I envision myself helping Ewald, my wounds talk better sense into me and I collapse unconscious.

Poltur climbs up on one of the crates that didn't stand up and walk away. He's now out of the grease. The mimics haven't moved from their position to approach you.

I'm sorry; I really have to update the map. Every other crate is a mimic. Looking at this, that means that one mimic will be outside of the grease on each side. I'll leave their attacks to the next round though.

Initiative order / Round 4
Eria (23) -- in the hold near the bow
Amanda (23) -- in the hold near the bow
Ewald (22) -- in the hold near the ladder near the bow
Thing in the hold (18) -- behind the ladder near the stern
Liandra (17) -- in the hold near the stern
Galadar (14) -- in the hold
Poltur (8)-- in the hold near the bow
Mimics (8)-- near the bow, in the middle, and near the stern

I'm afraid the map doesn't really clear much up for me, sorry. I have no idea where we are relative to one another or the bad guys. One note, however, Amanda has partially climbed back up the ladder she came down on, so she's not actually on the floor in the hold.

Lastly, who's up? Are we at the top of the order again with Eria?

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Eria will fire at the nearest Mimic again

Attack

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27

Damage

1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Liandra quickly crouches over Gladar producing a potion she pours past his lips.

CMW2d8 + 2 ⇒ (2, 7) + 2 = 11

"C'mon pretty boy, you are not getting killer by walking boxes in this dank hole,"

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald looks around the hold..with eight of the walking crates to deal with and one of his comrades down there is only one conclusion he can reach.."Everyone out" he calls "we can't fight down here"

He berates himself for having led the others into this trap while preparing to cover the retreat.

Seriously..8 mimics..that's hardly level appropriate.

There's 4 mimics and 4 normal crates. The (8) was their initiative roll.

Here's an updated MAP.

Ew = Ewald
Er = Eria
A = Amanda
m = Mimic
P = Poltur
G = Galdar
L = Liandra
Dark spot = grease
Anyone missed?

Both groups are gathered around ladders.

Thank you very much for the illustration - I had this so wrong in my head...

Amanda debates a parting shot at the enemy but decides to conserve her power until she knows what the others want to do. She climbs the rest of the way up the ladder and gets into position where she can watch Poltur.

I just want to make sure that Ewald is still exiting, now that he realizes 4 of those crates are not attacking him. Everyone else has taken an action this round except the mimics and Poltur.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald moves part way up the ladder to join Eria while opening a second flask. He drinks it down as he watches the crates hoping that they cannot follow him up the stairs

CMW 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (5, 6) + 3 = 14

Current HP = 29

Sorry about the delay..I'm having major problems signing into the message boards from home and at present can only post from work which means I am very limited in what I can do

"Let them go!" orders Poltur as the party climbs the ladder, "Zasril told me what I needed to know before he died. They've served their purpose."

The mimics allow you to exit. (And, yes, mimics can climb ladders.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald leads the party off the ship..

"I apologise for almost getting you all killed" he says quietly as the get back on dry land.."One thing I am now sure off, that man needs to die and soon..but how do we do it..nothing we do seems to hurt him."

Female Halfling Cleric 5

"Well wont kill him but could we not cut the ship loose let it float off and strand him?"

"Who is this Zasril he mentioned?"

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"I know not but it seems whoever it was is no longer a concern off ours as he is dead.As for casting the ship off..I'm not sure if that is either possible or advisable or indeed if our adversary hasn't some means to circumvent that..he certainly seems to have the upper hand at the moment something we have to change and fast."

"If I had any hopes of it working I'd set the whole damned ship afire and let it take him to the bottom"

Remember (or, perhaps it wasn't clear) that this ship is in a cavern -- a very large one. Setting it adrift isn't going to send it very far.

"OK, but it bothers me that he thinks we've served some purpose for him."

All's quiet from the ship.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"Right" Ewalds voice firms as he pulls himself together "Suggestions please.but no arguments as we do not have long to act methinks"

"I suspect he's already gone, using magic. All I could hope to do is let him believe I'm one of his hobgoblins, but it's pretty obvious that they are all out of the picture. We need someone with stealth to see if he and his walking boxes are still on board." She looks at Galadar and the elf. "I think one of you would have the best chance of success, don't you?"

She shrugs, "I have no other ideas. Tell me what to do - I still have some of my magic, but I don't know how useful any of it will be."

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"Tell me what you can still do..the same for the rest of you who can cast spells."

Ewald Salodar wrote:
"Tell me what you can still do..the same for the rest of you who can cast spells."

She looks shocked, "A girl has to have some secrets, sir!" Then she grins and starts counting off on her fingers, but she does so in a low voice so Ewald actually has to lean closer to hear her, "I can throw acid or frost or lights or a quick flash in the eyes, see magic, move small objects at a distance, or whisper at a distance. I can pretty much do those anytime.

"Or I can make a small group fall asleep, cast a ray that burns or weakens, deliver a touch that muddies the mind, get someone to see me as a friend, you've seen where I can make something slick, and... I guess that's it.

"I would guess that I haven't used half my power for the day - I feel pretty good yet."

I've been sick and offline a bit, but I'm back.

While the party talks, one of the mimics ascends the ladder, steps out through the trap door from the lower deck, and begins to change its shape. It quivers and expands in a bubbling wave seemingly liquid but defying gravity and flowing up and out in all directions until it meets what appear to be invisible surfaces giving it shape. The surface texture soon changes until it is doing a convincing representation of a brick wall.

So, a mimic is mimicking a very narrow wall between you and the trap door to the lower deck. Plans? Actions?

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Eria suspecting the thing is trying to stop the group from seeing something will shoot at it

Attack

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Confirm

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

Damage

1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

Ewald utters a soft curse brings up his bow and fires.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2

Liandra's cross bow snaps up as she looses a bolt at the "wall".

1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
1d10 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

that will teach me to cut and paste when im not fully awake..the second attack should only be at +5 and is therefore a 20

The mimic-come-wall takes bolts and arrows but does not fall. Another mimic climbs up by its side and also forms a wall, further blocking your view of the portal.

Female Halfling Cleric 5

Eria continues to fire

Attack

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Damage

1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Do the mimics completely span the deck or could someone acrobatic get past?

"We are trying to kill the wall-thing? I was saving these, but..."

She stretches out a hand and focuses her attention on the mimic that the others have been shooting at. Scorching Ray

Attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Damage 4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 5) = 15

Tarren:

I don't remember if she gets two rays or not. If she gets a second ray, she will use it on the same mimic unless it falls; in that case, she will aim the second ray at the second mimic. Here's the roll just in case.

Attack 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage 4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 1) = 9

The mimics do not block the entire deck; they block your view of the ladder to the lower deck. No one objected when Ewald said that he led you back to 'dry land' which means off the ship. You can get back on the ship and move around them if you want. Getting on the ship and around them will mean moving through a two threatened squares though.

The first mimic falls with Amanda's first ray. Behind it, a second one is climbing up the ladder to take it's place.

Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote:

Tarren:
I verified - she doesn't get the second ray until next level. My bad - I think I've been giving her two all this time.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"I think these are just a diversion" Ewald shouts.."we need to clear them fast and get after Poltur wherever he is."

Checking his quiver and finding himself down to just 12 shafts he curses softly

These things are just eating our resources

Scarab Sages

Male Human Expert 3/Cleric 3

"I'm afraid I'm not going to be much good until I get some of my strength back," I say wearily.

6 hp here at the moment. Any healers? :)

Nevertheless, I load my crossbow and fire at the mimics.

crossbow attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4

The wall continues to block your view of the ladder coming up.

DC 15 Perception check:
You hear a splash from the other side of the ship.

The mimics begin to retreat into the hold.

Male Human Ranger 6(favoured Class)

"Well I was right..there goes our target. Lets see if there is another way out of this cavern"

There's a door on the east wall and a 15' wide opening also on the east wall.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Rogue 6

I move to the side of the ship to see if I can tell who went into the water.
