Morning, Devlyn!
How goes it?
Don't worry man, you could be stuck where I am, temp in the negatives, windchill in the negative 20's (all Fahrenheit) and stuck in place of residence.

He was a welder, but this was over 30 yrs ago. He worked there and Newport News, We still have the Zippo Lighter he got for working on the U.S.S. Enterprise. :D
I had to endure Sta Trek jokes most of my life growing up because when people asked me what my dad did I told them he was a plank holder and enginneer on the U.S.S. Enterprise. I also was sad to see them use the Ranger as a standin for the Enterprise in Star Trek IV.

I hope the next Ford-class carrier gets named the Enterprise. The Navy should never be without one.

You'll keep enjoying him as he grows. 'Til he hits about 10, and you're no longer his superhero. My oldest is 24 and is finally turning the corner back into the son I once knew.

My oldest turns twelve in March. It's been quite a ride so far.

True, but I just want them to be prepared for it when it happens. I'd prefer that they stop naming carriers after mediocre presidents and go back to classic names like Hornet, Yorktown and Ranger.

First post of the morning was top of the page!
Good morning, all. What did I miss?
Well, Tom was shocked when he discovered that his fiance Evelyn had ben leading a secret life as a construction worker. Luckily, he was still blissfuly unaware of her penguin problem. On the other side of town, Detective Horg was no closer to discovering who was involved in the break-in and theft at the local sperm bank. Meanwhile, Benjamin was...no wait! That's my soap opera.

The don't pick the names based on what people think of them - it's (generally) based on either a Navy career (such as with Ford and Bush), or being friendly to the Navy (such as with Reagan). That's why you'll likely never see one named after Clinton. With Carter, they named a submarine.
Since the number of Presidents who served is (sadly) dwindling, and we don't always get Presidents friendly to the military, you just might see a change to some of those old names.

Meh, I've done it so many times, I don't really need any rehearsal - it's just the day of that I'll be busy.

No, I realize that. Ford and Bush both served on carriers but I just don't see that as a good enough reason to name the biggest, most powerful ships after them. Well, maybe Bush, I guess.
I definitely don't think that Vinson and Stennis should have gotten that honor either. Destroyers would have worked for all of them.Reagan, Truman, FDR, Teddy, Lincoln; have no problem with those guys. I do think the Navy should give more to John Adams as he was responsible for pretty much starting the Navy.

I agree about Stennis - never understood that one. Vinson, on the other hand, was a huge supporter of the Navy and helped modernize it heading into WWII. He also played a big role in the development of the Nuke Carriers.

Agreed. John-boy doesn't get enough credit.

True, but I bet if we looked through history, there were plenty of other senators, representatives, secretaries of the Navy, etc. that were instrumental in helping the Navy out at some point in their careers. Again, I think a destroyer name would have served just fine.
Sorry about the ranting, I always get worked up about the bizarre ways the Navy names it's classes these days.
