What Old School(pre-3.x) D&D artist would you most want to see do a piece for Golarion?

All this art talk lately has made me curious. I got to thinking about the old 1E and especially 2E artists I fell in love with back in the 90's. Larry Elmore, Keith Parkinson, Clyde Caldwell, Brom, and the rest.

If you could have any pre 3.x D&D artist do any piece of art based on Golarion and/or the iconics, who would you want?

Totally not a ploy to bait Paizo into actually pursuing this.

(And yeah I know Wayne Reynolds did 2E work. Just work with me here.)

You know who would be a natural fit for illustrating forays into Irrisen and the First World? Tony Freakin' DiTerlizzi. Heck, much of his already existing art would fit those two areas like a glove.

I would be all over a Brom rendition of an Osirion-themed party too. You know, with Valeros and Seelah actually dressing for the climate. He'd probably be the go-to guy for Worldwound panoramas as well.

edit-Man, I wish Keith Parkinson was still with us, just got to thinking over how much I enjoyed his backgrounds...

Tony Diterlizzi would be awesome... so would Brom. I think R.K. Post would do some good work for Golarion (didn't I spot him AT paizocon though?).

I would love to see some Valerie Valusek art again. I used to love her interior art in 2E.

Silver Crusade

That's right, r.k.Post was there! What has he been up to lately?

Damn, I can't match the name to the art. Any specific pieces from specific books you can recall?

I'm trying to remember who it was that did that "soft" black/gray/white art in some of the Ravenloft books(and the Shadow Elves supplement for Mystara) too...

Erol Outus, especially for some strange monsters.. especially Lovecraftian monsters....

She did a lot of the black and white interior art for Forgotten Realms material in 2E, especially in the mid 2E era, as well as some of the interior art for Dragonlance products as well.

I know she did more than this, but those are the main one's that spring to mind.

I would love to the the Iconics by Elmore

Phil Foglio, definitely.

I just want to see SEONI BY Larry Elmore. I mean I love the way she's drawn now, but Larry Elmore's women are ... way too hot for drawings.

Grand Lodge

*sigh* Keith Parkinson would have been an AWESOME choice. I LOVED his work.

I would have to say I'd vote for Larry Elmore in a heart beat or less. I think his vision and art DEFINED D&D for me.

I'd have to go for Larry Elmore too, his art has always seemed so iconically D&D to me. Not that I'd complain about any of those mentioned doing some work for Paizo! :)

Having said that, I certainly haven't had any compaints about the artists that have been used to far. The beautiful presentation is what originally drew me to the few Pathfinder products on the local game store shelves!

Oh yeah, this thread should in no way be taken as any sort of complaint about the current artists being used and I will Mike Tyson the ears off anyone who tries to hijack it for that purpose.

Much love to Reynolds, Hou, Prescott, Wilderman, Yan and every other artist that has shown up in Pathfinder so far. Keep on keeping on.

edit-Nor should it be taken as a knock against the 3rd Edition art crew. I know I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at a Todd Lockwood free-for-all featuring the iconics.

Krome wrote:

I just realized that Parkinson would have been the perfect choice to paint a Kyra. He could certainly rock the intricate details and layered clothing. Man, I really miss him.

Y'know, I wouldn't mind seeing the other "traditionalists" like Elmore, Caldwell, Fields and etc. taking a crack at some of the more "wildly" designed iconics like Amiri, Sajan, and Lini.

Liberty's Edge

Brom for the win!

I miss his art so much.

Agreed though I'd love to see him do Lini too. I can't be the only one that thinks the new gnomes are just adorably cute and neat but it's always Seoni Seoni Seoni

... I mean it IS Seoni

Yu're thinking of Stephen Fabian, who had quite a career in pulp fanzines before working on Ravenloft.

Agreed.

I also love the new looks for gnomes and halflings. Lini and Lem are great, cute, funny looking and represent a little world of adventure all by themselves.
To be fair, i already liked the WotC iconic Gimble (by Wayne Reynolds), who was cute, funny looking and very gnomish.
But although Lidda is cute, she always looked more kenderish to me than halflingish. Now Lem, with his funky outfit and his furry feet, that's a halfling. Obviously more in the tradition of hobbits, but that's the way i like them.

About the artists i would like to see working on Pathfinder or Golarion :
Tony DiTerlizzi and Brom.

Erol Otus and Jeff Dee, maybe for some new old school type Pathfinder module line (hint maybe?) :)

Beyond that id go with Tony DiTerlizzi.

Scarab Sages

Dave Trampier, and his woodcut style.
Yeah, I know, not going to happen, but this is a wish-list, not a predict-list.

Jeff Dee?

Caldwell and Elmore get my vote.

Liberty's Edge

I met Jeff Easley at the Texas Ren Fest last year, and he was a cool mofo (and my favorite "second wave" D&D artist), so he definitely gets my vote. Trampier was my favorite "first wave" guy, so he gets my vote as well.

And no one does hotties like Elmore, so he'll do for the iconics...

Brom and DiTerlizzi would be cool as well.

For everyone suggesting rk post, he was at PaizoCon doing illustrations and on the PaizoCon, so we might be seeing some of his stuff in the Core Rulebook, the Bestiary, or other upcoming products.

For me, I'd love to see Erol Otis do his signature line drawings to compliment a Pathfinder's Journal series with a decidedly old-school flair. I don't know if some of the other artists listed would really fit with the visual style that Paizo has established for the line in the last two years, so I'm hesitant to say I'd like a Brom or Elmore version of the iconics, at least not in print. Perhaps in some sort of special art book? Or in my imagination? Both of those would be fine, but I like the continuity of styles between most of the artists who frequently appear in the pages of Pathfinder.

That desire for a continuation of style is why I sort of qualified Erol Otus for monsters.. His people have never bothered me (they're fine), but I appreciate the desire to maintain a particular art style.

However Otus could do a fantastic old style monster piece which wouldn't rub against the current styles being used.

Though he doesn't do a lot of color...

Mikaze wrote:

Larry Elmore hands down! :)

I'd only want Otus for certain kinds of pieces. I'd have to say the same for Brom and DiTerlizzi, actually.

R. K. Post--yeah, what's going on there? I'd like to know. (But he's outside the purview of the OP, right?)

Trampier -- yes, but does he do anything other than B&W? Not that I'd mind some B&W. In the Society adventures, maybe? Certainly in the novels.

What I really wish is that we had not lost Parkinson. But of these, I think I'd have to say Clyde Caldwell the most.

EDIT: OK, maybe I'd say Elmore for #2. I like his characters, but his dragons annoy me.

Jeff Dee, Larry Elmore and Phil Foglio are all awesome in different ways!

Please get RK Post to draw some tieflings, or anything fiendish at all. *profuse drool*

Trampier non-black and white - does the classic PH cover with the idol ring a bell? :)

Yeah, I'm brain dead. The funny thing is, I thought I typed "mostly b&w". But obviously, I didn't. Poor brain.

While I'm at it, Caldwell's dragons don't win any prizes in my book...but they're not as annoying to me as Elmore's.

Silver Crusade

Erol Otus and Jim Holloway. Nothing says "Oldskool" more to me than the art of those two.

DiTerlizzi. I never played Planescape... I have a lot of the Planescape material.. I always told myself it was interesting "background material", but really, mainly for his art. There are a lot of others who would be good from the point of nostalgia. Dave Sutherland, people like that. I'm not a fan of some of the more popular artists in the genre (Elmore, Caldwell). I liked a lot of the work in various versions of Empire of the Petal Throne / Tekumel (starting with Barker's own work in EPT) over the years. Some great stuff... by Craig James Smith, Chris Huddle, Kathy Marscall, Giovanni Fregni, and more I can't recall -- black and white interior illustrations mostly. All in all, one of Paizo's strongpoints is their choice of artwork. I'll probably be happy with their current art choices.

Agree! Erol Otus is my first choice. Jeff Dee is a close second.

Scarab Sages

I wanna see Brom, Michael Whelan or Elmore.

The Exchange

I have to admit that the only old-edition-artists who made me whish to have certain books just for the artwork were Tony di Terlizzi and Todd Lockwood. With these notable exceptions, I much prefer the style Ben Wootten, Eva Widermann and Andrew Hou brought to Dragon/Dungeon and nowadays to Pathfinder.

I'd love a solid Elmore of the iconics. Most of the old school art that creeps into my mind is Elmore. I continually think of the older editions I have of the Dragonlance Chronicles series where Elmore did the cover art: 3 characters from the series in simple poses and a dragon in the background.

Just sexy enough for the women, the men weren't overtly on steroids. Each with a decidedly sincere look on their faces. I'd love to get that look with the Iconics.

Larry Elmore and Erol Otus... those guys captured the feel, the times and of course our imaginations... I still remember the first time I saw the cover of Dieties and Demigods... yes the original with the CoCT mythos in it... I had to have it...lol...even though I was 12 at the time...and my Funde family was aghast at the obvious human sacrafice going on...

YES! EROL OTUS FOR THE WIN!
I always had a soft spot for Russ Nicholson (1e FF) as well.
And Jim Roslof as a runner-up, I guess.

Really? 99% of the reason I can't stand the 1e FF is his "art"! ;)

I think I'm going to kill everyone in our Pathfinder Society game today. We got SLAMMED last night at work (Pride parade watchers/participants) and I need sleep. Thinking TPK in the third room...

Never said he was good, just that I had a soft spot for it.

Yeah, for a town as conservative as Houston pretends to be, they definitely mobilize one hell of a massive parade. Kudos. And having too much work is always preferrable to having too little...
