Question - Silence

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Sovereign Court

While helping my Cleric player choose his spells last night, we came up with a question about silence; namely, does someone entering the area of silence once it's been cast get to save vs. the effects? Suppose the Cleric casts silence on the party rogue who then moves 100ft. to sneak up on a wizard. Does the wizard get a save to avoid being silenced?

Thanks for your help!

Silence only gives a Will save if the spell is cast on a person or one of their objects, in which case only that person gets the Will save. If the spell is cast on an unattended object or a point in space, then their is no save. Entering the effect does not give a saving throw either.

Upon the casting of this spell, complete silence prevails in the affected area. All sound is stopped: Conversation is impossible, spells with verbal components cannot be cast, and no noise whatsoever issues from, enters, or passes through the area. The spell can be cast on a point in space, but the effect is stationary unless cast on a mobile object. The spell can be centered on a creature, and the effect then radiates from the creature and moves as it moves. An unwilling creature can attempt a Will save to negate the spell and can use spell resistance, if any. Items in a creature’s possession or magic items that emit sound receive the benefits of saves and spell resistance, but unattended objects and points in space do not. This spell provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks.

I think the only way you get a save is if it's cast directly on you which is why noone ever casts in on a person but usually a small stone or a coin or something that is unattended. At least that's the interpretation I see most. Which is why there is a second entry on both spell resistance and save for no and none.

Excellent, thanks for the clarifications! How my players have gone 6 years of playing D&D and not using silence is beyond me!

I really hate the "cast on unattended object" part of Silence. My PCs favorite tactic is to cast silence on a some tiny object, throw a whole bunch of them at the enemy caster and bum rush him. Grrr....

Grrr tell me about it. A monk in the campaign I GM has silence cast on a stone that he carries and then just follows around any enemy spellcaster and grapples them.

Yup, Grrr. The monk found a way to use tactics to make him a decent PC. Grrr.

That's why some casters would have silent spell+ dispel magic to counter when that happens. Not all but a lot of casters would know that Silence is a real problem for them.

Or at least a pair of boots of flying to knock together and fly straight up?
