I was thinking 10 in a row because it sets up a buffer between the offensive posts and the (hopefully) non-offensive posts that follow the smurfing.
Yeah, I like that idea too. Although, I could see it get real complicated. Imagine a day or time-of-day when it was tough getting to get 10 folks to smurf all at once. EX:
________________________________________________________________________
1-Jerk.
2-No, you're a jerk.
1-You're a jerk for all these jerky reasons.
2-Your reasons are wrong, not surprising for a Jerk.
1-Your mamma was a jerk.
2-And thereby you prove your jerkiness.
3-Hey guys, can we get back on topic?
1-Jerk off.
2-You can't talk that way to her, you jerk.
SMURF WARNING
1-You smurfs can also jerk off.
Smurf 1
Smurf 2
Smurf 3
2-Freakin smurfs! You will not silence my treatment of jerkitude!
Smurf 1
Smurf 2
1-Your treatment silences itself, jerk.
Smurf 1
Smurf 2
Smurf 3
Smurf 4
Smurf 5
Smurf 6
Smurf 7
3-Anyway, back to the original point, blah, blah, blah...

See what I mean? Would we keep smurfing after 3 tried to get the thread back on track? Would we give her a chance, or would we insist on getting the magic 10 before leaving the thread alone for a while, before requesting a resmurfing? My feeling is that rules may not always cover the nuances of some of these situations.

Good point. I suppose just 10 smurfs then. The #1 rule of the smurf alliance should be to put out the fires, but I want to make sure we've got limits on how much we do so we don't become a worse problem than the flame war itself.
The other problem is that, to be effective, we can't really debate the merits of whether a thread should(n't) be smurfed. That should probably be another rule, because otherwise we will end up in meta debates that mirror the actual debate, which would be contrary to the purpose of the alliance.

Can I put catrolls in my smurfings? It's like a rickroll, but I use clips from the musical Cats.
No. We will have TPS reports for the smurfing, which must be complied with. We will install an auditor-in-smurf to review each smurfing post to determine whether or not the TPS reports were complied with. Failure to comply with a TPS report will result in 10 demerits. At 50 demerits, you need to send me $10 to get back into the Smurf Alliance.
I'd say as long as the post contains the word "smurf" and is off-topic, that's good enough.

Yeah, if the state of the thread is arguable, then we don't want to get caught up in that. Ten total smurf postings, or ten by ten different posters? The later would give us the moral authority of more than three annoyed people smurfing.

You guys are hilarious!! I think the absurdity of ten smurfs popping in ...
You've never seen it before?
'tis a beautiful sight.
...and saying something completely unrelated and silly would be enough to derail any argument.
You'd think so...but there's some resilient, angry mothers out there. Well, I guess when any of us gets really angry, our resilience gets pretty high.
Best wishes on the interview!

Thank you!
You know, even at my angriest I am up for a laugh. Guess I really don't get that angry. And I hate getting into those discussions. I find that my time here is my relaxation time, so getting into a completely assinine debate with people who don't want to listen to opposing ideas, and simply are wanting to shove their complaints or grievences about things down other peoples throats is just not my idea of relaxing.

Well I managed to score a phone interview with the job that I was applying for, unfortunatley I missed it while I was at the docs today, good thing is, dude doing the hiring is a FB friend and said he will simply call back. :)
Still crossing fingers!!!
Congrats on the phone interview. Still sending happy thoughts your way. :)

Grats on the potential interview!
As it happened, I missed an important phone call by 10 minutes today ... and it may end up costing me over $200 because I won't have something in by the date it was supposed to be in now. It might be okay, but it's gone from 100% okay to 50/50. =P Ah well, you win some, some you hope you didn't lose ....

Nothing but danger there, and everytime I posted advocating moderation I got my face chewed off. They still busy over there? Honestly I haven't kept up with the new iterations evolution. They generally seem calmed down, but I don't go there much anymore either. I'm starting to become a Heathy type poster who just drops in to make a joke and moves on.
Except I do it with style.
Pony landmines? Cool.

Why limit ourselves to the boards?
lol. Now there's a great visual. :) A whole bunch of people holding up smurf posters and making jokes during a tense political moment...
Right up until they got booted out of course. :)

No stones thrown from my end Patrick - it seems like the type of thread that is hard not to respond to given how it was pitched.
I'm in on the 4e drive-bys.

I heard an urban myth that said if you stand in front of a mirror and say "I don't like 4e" three times he shows up and kills you. ;)

Good luck with the job interview. Here's to not having to drive to Texas!
