PaizoCon Mix Challenge

This was really a lot of fun.

Listening to DJ Whispering Tyrant laying down the tracks was a excellent way to cap off an otherwise awesome day.

I wished I would have had the time and energy to submit my selections BEFORE Sunday morning.

Your lack of CD brings shame to the Paizocon mix challenge....oh s@@* I forgot mine as well.

Yeahh...I forgot mine too...*shakes fist*

Can we get a final track list from DJ Whispering Tyrant...who was most assuredly NOT whispering, but rockin' out at this gathering?

Liberty's Edge

I do hope many moons from now, as other paizocons come and go, we will build up a pretty sweet library. Can you imagine as we get better at this and get deeper into our collections what we can pull out. Four paizocons from now will legend....................................................wait for it...........................................ary!

Well, that was all kinds of awesome.

I think everyone agreed that the best discovery was Wishmaster, a Finnish theatrical metal band with an operatic female singer presented by Paizo's star Finn.

The mix ended up 39 songs long, with some really cool stuff. I will post the final track list later this week.

Does that include my three?

(Next year I WILL have a CD. Promise.)

I think it was 42 with your three Silkygreenbelly. If I remember correctly ... that was a LOT of music.

Scarab Sages

It was a blast!
Too tired to stay the whole time but it was really fun.

Thanks Erik and everyone.

It was a pretty cool deal and a good way to end a great evening. There were a lot of cool tracks brought in.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

This was a fun event and a great way to wind down that evening. Thanks to everyone who brought stuff to share, but especially, thanks to Zuxius for letting me sample his delicious brew while listening to good tunes. I think that really tied it all together well.

Damn, that beer was tasty!

Erik,
Will you be posting the song list?

You left my Corvus Corax track off the list. That's okay though, because I can't find a link to the track (well, except one that someone used for a WoW video without permission; the audio was deleted). So here's a good sample of Corvus Corax's general style:Saltarello

Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel (featuring Henry Rollins);just click on the player on the right of the screen.

Wouldn't you know it, can't find either doubleDrive song on the netz. Well, since this came about because of a discussion of cover songs, here's one by them: Mexican Radio. Apparently, someone customized it for Guitar Hero.

After the sucess of this year, I have a feeling the 2010 PaizoCon Mix Challenge will have to be limited to one song.

Unless the minute and a half rule is in effect through the entire event. It really made a difference for the last handful of songs ...

Erik-

I noticed you didn't put any of the Opeth on the list--did you get a chance to listen to it yet?

EDIT--I really wish I could have come down to the Mix Challenge Party, but I was starting to run out of steam. Needed sleep!

"Porcelain Heart" is my favorite on the CD, but they all are quite good. Most of Opeth's stuff, however, takes more than one listen as it is quite dense and has many layers. I hope you enjoy it!

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

This is a live clip, but the audio is pretty good:
Sally By Gogol Bordello

Someone on YouTube made a video with this song using Cowboy Bebop. Ignore that weird intro thingy:
Thieves in the Night by Blackstar (Talib Kwelli and Mos Def)

Live recording of ReBirth playing this song in the Quarter:
Do Whatcha Wanna by ReBirth Brass Band

Looks like a legit video to me:
Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio

A number of the tracks we listened to during the mix party brought to mind the novels of one of my favorite authors...Joe R. Lansdale...very much a East Texas horror and action writer.

I wish I could recall which particular tracks evoked his writing...but I can't.

CJ

Wow...

More Blues and Folk than I was expecting. I was expected harder stuff.

Not saying there is anything wrong with that. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

Wouldn't be harder stuff if it were not for the blues.

Next year, jazz will be in the mix. ;)

The Exchange

I will have to try harder on this next go-around on this unofficial event. I believe it was discussed that next time there would be only one song per person. Given poor Erik's drive home, that seems fair.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

I may try to stay at the hotel at least the night of the mix party next year, so that won't be such an issue (I hope). That said, I think there will likely be more people, too, so I'm likely to reduce the number of songs per person to 2.

1 song is just not enough.

Oh yes!

Erik Mona has come to party!

And I have just the recipe.

What a great first trip to the States... we even got Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary when visiting game shops in San Francisco during free rpg day! Links to "harder stuff":

Nightwish: Wishmaster and Elvenpath and Nemo

Amorphis: Sampo ok... it was too long...

Thanks to everybody we talked and played with during the weekend and paizo people for doing this. And thanks to Zuxius for great beer and special thanks to Sean from my girlfriend (you didn't make her first playing experience too weird being god and all that :)

Dude, you were totally cool! Thanks for visiting us in the states. We will have to figure out a beer deal.

Yo Erik, any new news about the Mix Challenge for this year?

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 4

Already burned my!

1st song found, hard to decide on 2nd... maybe something from the origins of Mordenkainen.

Sovereign Court

I think this year will be a delve into the world of jazz and bluegrass ... get all you metal lovers a bit of culture (I kid, I kid). Maybe a jump into the local music scene here to give y'all a taste of something you otherwise may never hear. So many options, so many options ...

The Exchange

I think this time we need more atmosphere with the lights and other things. Make it a party!

The Exchange

Still wondering about this one.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

Ok, I'm going to pull this together this year, but I'm buried under a mountain of stress related to the following:

Shipping all our Gen Con product (DONE!)

Book Expo America (Next Week!)

Moving (Two weeks from now!)

I'll try to get some space from Josh, but in the meantime I'm thinking that we should each only get to choose ONE song. I don't think anyone has the endurance for another 6-hour event like last year.

Any suggestions on how else we should put this together?

I will definitely be attending this... sounds amazing. I can't imagine digesting 6 hours of music like that...Nightwish won!?!?? Moondance was good from them. They're cool for a progressive metal band, but I'd have thought someone would have brought some Sonata Arctica or Within Temptation.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I don’t think finding space will be difficult. We can just do what we did last year and take over a room once events are over.

As far as number of songs goes, one will be hard to pick, but will probably work out a bit better. I, however, propose that we extend the duration of the track up from the 3:30 range. That’s fine for your average pop song, but I doubt most of us are going to bring in your average pop song. How about a single song no longer than 5 minutes, or however many tracks you can fit into five minutes (for punk/hardcore fans, that could easily be four songs :P ).

How about this:

PAIZOCON MIX CHALLENGE 2010
--------------------------

Bring your favorite musical discovery of the year to share with other music-loving Paizo fans. The idea is to expose your fellows to genuinely cool, quirky music they probably don't know, solidifying your reputation as a maven of musical quality and refined taste. Don't bring a KISS song or Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit* and think you're going to blow everyone's socks off.

THE RULES
---------

ONE song, audio file on CD.

NO popular stuff unless you want to expose yourself as having terrible and limited musical taste.

NO song over 5 minutes in length, period.

NO more than ONE song, no matter what.

NO cute little jokes, movie quotes, or sound effects.

ABSOLUTELY NO soundtrack garbage. Save that stuff for your RPGs, losers.

THE PARTICULARS
---------------

Day and location TBD, but will most likely be after hours FRIDAY.

There WILL be beers present, so this is probably not a good event for children. I'm guessing there will be some swears, too, so keep this in mind if you are easily offended.

* Sara-Marie!

Sounds great, but one song ... man that puts on some pressure.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

Yeah, it's gonna be rough. I've spent a good part of the evening just listening to music trying to think of what'd be the best thing to bring.

The Exchange

Thanks for getting back to this Erik, despite the stress. Hope the massage helped!

I like the swearing. I never swear, but when you have to stress a point, it helps. Just not on every other adjective please!

The 5 mins limitation should go to 6 mins. I think songs rarely go to 4 mins and beyond, so a couple lengthy pieces won't hurt terribly.

I am all for a beer event. This time cold brews will be brought to the location. Cold homebrews.

I kind of like the H.S. dance motif with Erik Mona as the D.J. and the room open for dancing with the lights down and the disco ball spinning.

Nobody is out dancing, nobody.

Grand Lodge

For me I like some old school odd.

Genesis, "Mama" (yes, Genesis)

Oingo Boingo, "Just Another Day" (For that Cuthulu paranoia)

And hell I know it's fron a soundtrack, but it rocks,

Queen, "Give me the Prize"

The Exchange

Trying to keep this one in mind. We will have two songs. My wife and I are bringing Minnesota to PaizoCon!

No Problem.

Prepare to have your ear-holes to be reamed anew by the purest Viking Metal known to man or Gawds!

Time to know where and when. I understand that NEX is what is FIRST.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

Oof. Yeah, my Spire of Nex game just ruined me today. I was too exhausted to run this after, and it looked like the usual suspects were otherwise engaged until late in the evening. Let's do it Saturday after the banquet. I'll announce the location during the banquet so that everyone gets the info. It'll be in one of the downstairs rooms.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Lots of people asking about my entry, Blue Stahli.

The song is on this page as a free download, too!

I also recommend checking out Celldweller!
