Thank you. I didn't want to be the one to have to point that out; the Dingo might bite me, and (speaking of vaccines!) I'm not sure my rabies vaccination is up to date.

No rabies in Australia.... No H1N1 either :-) the only confirmed Australian is in London.

mmm, in 2003 we had the bird-flu, people thought that itwas going to be bad. Here we are, in 2009, with swine-fle. I am not all that worried, but then again, I live in Europe.

I am actually more worried that people using Tamiflu will make the flu resistant to its effects, and then we will have a real problem, just like we have with bacteria who are resistant to most anti-bacterial medicines.

You caught on! well done!...they are treating a new virus with something that covers an old variant of bird flu...and yes it could cause the Bird flu aspect to go resistant to Tamiflu.

Ten minutes from now you will realize that any virus that doesnt have genetic debris characteristic of a natural evolution was man made...and therefore it was deliberatly dispersed in Mexico City.

SO lets call it the MEXICO CITY INCIDENT...because we know better.

A bit of advice: Governments will tell you what you need to hear purely to maintain order. If a lie keeps you from rioting outside a hospital for the only three remaining vials of vaccine then they will lie. If you die, its not like you will be around to vote them out or run against them at the next election.

Yes. Of course. Because the news media have been a bastion of level-headedness the last few weeks. Call me when the deaths from H1N1 surpass the deaths from drinking and driving for the same time period. Then, I'll freak.

Or for that matter when it exceeds the death toll of last season's flu.

Yeah, I'm waiting for one of these news organizations or reporters to apologize for making so much out of nothing. It did cost Mexico an estimated 2 billion in tourist dollars, at a time when they could least afford it. I think that was the biggest casualty of this whole mess.

What it makes me worry about is what news SHOULD we have been getting reported to us during that time that got quietly swept under the rug?

Fiendish Dire Weasel wrote:

I don't think the issue is quite that simple. If this turned out to be a repeat of 1918, any news outlet that told everyone not to worry would be immediately out of business, and subject to near-infinite lawsuits, long before the death toll reached 40 million. Deadly pandemic flu events DO occur; every one is not a hoax. No one can predict which outbreak will turn out to be one of those, so the trick is to treat them all seriopusly, but without panicking. Assuming that it can never happen is dangerously head-in-the-sand, and expecting news agencies to have perfect oracular vision is likewise unrealistic. So they did what they could: reported that it could become a dangerous pandemic.

P.S. The 1918 event started with mild cases in the spring. After everyone thought it was a false alarm, the daggone virus mutated into something very nasty and came back in the fall. Worldwide fatalities were high enough to create a perceptable dip in a plot of human population vs. time.

Oh, now that IS pretty crazy. I'm not suggesting some big conspiracy theory that released this illness.

I know 99% of this is an exercise in CYA. The government (and by extension the press) is so leery after Katrina and 9/11 and such that they know if something gets away from them it will be very bad for PR. So as a result the reaction to everything is overblown.

But at the same time, there's an old saying in politics that you should "never let a crisis go to waste". All I'm suggesting is perhaps everybody was focused on this swine flu, and somebody somewhere took advantage of that.

I'm confused. Did you listen to the audio? Obviously he's just being a goof and admits as much when he says, "I'm just trying to say this in a creative way" but you can't really say that it is 'out of context'. So dumb even Rush Limbaugh thought it sounded dumb as he said it, but not out of context.

Sure but there is abig difference between playing when the cat is away and engineering a biological weapon that targets and kills cats in order to play.

I'd bet money that there are some low lifes in Mexico that are trying to peddle 'Swine Flu' Elixer (also cures cancer - will make your manhood the size of a bus and will keep a girl looking like she's 21 forever). The fact that they are peddling such things does not mean that they caused the virus.

The Exchange

Agree 100%. Sorry if my original point was misunderstood. In NO way was I trying to suggest Obama or any other human entity "caused" this virus or outbreak, or anything of the sort.

Also, to just clear the air, Elvis is really dead, and we really did land on the moon. :)

No, I didn't listen to the audio, I just read the text. My internet connection is really slow today, so the audio was buffering every half second.

How about some liquids, Vitamin C, bedrest and Tamiflu? Seems to work just fine ...

I've heard it may mingle with the seasonal flu in the Southern Hemisphere. Can I have Australia? I have always wanted a pet koala.

Some information about last season’s flu season.

39,827 confirmed cases for 2007-2008

During the 2007--08 influenza season, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) exceeded the epidemic threshold†† for 8 consecutive weeks in the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System during the weeks ending January 12--May 17, 2008 (weeks 9--16). The percentage of P&I deaths peaked at 9.1% during the week ending March 15, 2008 (week 11).

Roughly 3,624.257 more deaths needed before it matches the epidemic, world ending, level it was last year.

They just say its the Swine flu...Its actually a Zombie Plague spread by Koala. Last night in a secret briefing to Commonwealth High Priority Citizens - we were told that Shotguns and Hallucinagenic drugs would be the ideal choice at this time. So the Zombie Plague outbreak is going to be pretty bad this time.

Thank you. I didn't want to be the one to have to point that out; the Dingo might bite me, and (speaking of vaccines!) I'm not sure my rabies vaccination is up to date.

No need to panic Kirth, rabies is one of the few diseases where you can be successfully vaccinated AFTER contracting it. It usually takes 10 to 18 days (I think, check Google and Wikipedia as well as disease books like Microterrors for more info) for rabies to really start having an effect on you.

On the H1N1 it seems to be relatively mild so don't panic but stay alert would basically be my suggestion. It hasn't done the travel industry any favours though (working in the travel industry, I can say that it hasn't caused too much trouble but some) Also on the Muslim oriented conspiracy theories, cases (or suspected cases) have shown up in Israel which is not exactly a pork producing centre of the world either.
