Nuveril |
The spider meanwhile snaps again at Nuveril, this time it's bite taking effect (5 points of damage and a DC 12 Fort save to avoid taking 2 points fo Str damage).
Fortitude save (1d20+4=11) Stupid IC! One short of saving. I think I would rather have rolled a 1. Oh well, time to rage....
Nuveril gasps and stumbles slightly as the poison enters her system; then she steels herself, the knuckles gripping her weapons going white as she growls through gritted teeth, and, a manic light in her eyes, swings with renewed vigor. Her blade swings wide, but the spike of her madu manages to pierce the chitinous exoskeleton of the spider, leaving behind a thin, yellowish trickle.
scimitar and madu (1d20+2=9, 1d20+2=20) madu damage (1d3+1=2)
Rage round 1

Sorry, I was out of town all day yesterday. I do try to check on updates at least once every 24hrs.
Nothing personal, I'm just trying to keep the pace up. To that end, I'm also continuing Monty's "Everyone post ASAP, and I'll sort it into init order" trick, so it looked like it had been more like 5 days than one... Not to worry!
Could someone continue to post for Nano until his Player makes a re-appearence...?
Losk Hammertin |
Losk takes another swipe at the spider, this time hitting it properly, (1d20+2=15, 1d8+1=7) a leg snaps, but the spider doesn't fall...
Nevynxxx |
Sadly, that should have been just one point of damage to the spider. I forgot to adjust my half-strength-damage-with-off-hand-weapons for the spider poison. Do you want to roll for Nano, gavgoyle, since you didn't get to roll for Parvenah? I keep rolling ones....
Or, "Please do it, someone needs to roll high!"

:) Particularly since Nuveril is going down if she gets hit again ... and then she comes out of Rage and gets even more in the negatives. Thank Jason Buhlman for death at negative Con!

I'm sure we can do something about that, now, how do these healing surges work again ;)
More seriously, if I do somthing other than an outright attack, will the spider get an AOO, since it's still in combat with Nuveril?
Parvenah Az'Hadria |
Nano lets out a little yelp and steps way from the spider (5'step if he was adjacent). Gathering his magical energies, the halfling sorcerer lets fly a acidic bolt from his fingertips.
Attack: 13+5= 18
Damage: 5
_______________________________________
Parvenah also jockeys for a good angle on the spider, but as it recoils from Nano's acid bolt, it jerks away from the path of the archer's arrow.
Attack: 9
Gavgoyle |
You can still take a 5' step at the begining of the round, correct? I don't have my Core Book handy, so I can't check... are there any substantive changes to the AoO? Can AoOs be made with natural weapons? I thought that they could not...
Joana |

Well, if it has a reach of 5 and you came up directly behind Nuveril, I don't think it would get an AoO on you. As I have been picturing combat, however, I thought Losk was coming from the door we came in and the spider was between Nuveril and him as she had been approaching the door in the opposite wall. If that's the case, then he'd have to Tumble through the spider's threatened squares to avoid the AoO.
I'd say don't worry about Nuveril right now. If the rest of the party can just kill the spider and prevent it from carrying her off to eat her, she's revivable. I will point out for the DM that her AC is a 14 right now, while she's raging.
EDIT: Ninja'd by Gavgoyle! According to the PRD, you can't make an AoO unarmed, but creatures with natural physical weapons count as being armed. I just don't know if Nuveril and Losk are on the same side of the spider.

Losk should be adjacent to it, since he just hit it with his axe... :)
That said, the channel energy I was referring to is a standard action that doesn't cause an AOO, according to the PRD.
That said, Nano just took the spider out...[/ooc]
As Nano's magical blast washes over the spider, it collapses to the ground, yellow ichor seeping out of it's wounds.
Not sure how much XP that was, I'll post it up later on...

With the spider dead, Losk takes a few steps towards the centre of the room, and pulls something from a pocket. Closing his eyes, he concentrates deeply, and rays of sunshine stream through the holes in the roof, bathing the room in a brilliant glow. As the rays wash over everyone, they feel reinvigorated and renewed.
Losk moves to get everyone in the 30ft radius of channel energy, so that would be 1d6 HP each up ot your MAX.

Do you play that everyone rolls their own d6 instead of the cleric rolling one for everyone? If so...
Nuveril glares suspiciously at the dwarf as she feels the energy wash over her, but as the angry wound from the spider bite closes over, she relaxes and bends over to retrieve her dropped javelin. "Cursed creature," she mutters, still feeling the weakness in her muscles.
Fatigued for 2 rounds. Do I have to roll another save against the poison?
Montgomery Hall |
Do you play that everyone rolls their own d6 instead of the cleric rolling one for everyone? If so...
Postive energy (1d6=5)
That's a good question, the line in the PRD is not at all clear...
Channeling energy causes a burst that affects all
creatures of one type (either undead or living) in a 30-foot
radius centered on the cleric. The amount of damage dealt
or healed is equal to 1d6 points of damage plus 1d6 points
of damage for every two cleric levels beyond 1st (2d6 at 3rd,
3d6 at 5th, and so on). Creatures that take damage from
channeled energy receive a Will save to halve the damage.
The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the cleric’s level
+ the cleric’s Charisma modifier. Creatures healed by
channeled energy cannot exceed their maximum hit point
total—all excess healing is lost.
I like randomness though, so yeah, everyone rolls their own...

Medium spider venom Type:injury DC:14 Frequency:1/rd. for 4 rds. Damage:1d2 Str Cure: 1 save
Which means (as I read it) you need to make the save every round for 4 rounds, or until you make a single save. It also means I rolled the wrong thing for the Str damage, but since it was <=2, and hasn't affected you yet, I think we can ignore that....

Heh. I like to think of her little white blood cells Raging up themselves and bullrushing those poisonous interlopers right out of that wound. If anyone wants to search this room without Nuveril opening doors and letting in more things to fight, now's their chance while she's recovering from her fatigue. If that spider jumped anyone else, their equipment ought to be around someplace.

Is the pattern of the mold suggestive of anything?

The curious Nano starts to poke around the beds, seeing if anyone has left anything interesting in this room.
Anything of value has long since rotted away to dust, or rusted, ven in this dry heat.

Only unnatural growth, beyond that, there is nothing more to see.

Hopefully that story is coming to an end with these acts, and another, better one can begin. There's an arch? *back to map* Is that the door in the south wall? That's where Nuveril was headed before the spider attacked, so let's go there.
This is the lowest chamber of what was once a 40ft heigh tower. All of the wooden floors have now collapsed and the old ladder that used to access these lies atop the pile of rotting wood. To one side, a 10ft wide stairway leads down into darkness.
Nuveril follows Parvenah into the collapsed tower and peers at the stairway dubiously. "This 'mission' of Her-High-and-Mightiness just got longer. There's no telling how deep this thing may go, and there could be all kinds of strange creatures down there. At least, we can hope this is the only way up. I say we finish searching the aboveground level first. Until then, let's drag some of this wood over the staircase. It may not keep anything down there, but if we come back and find it disturbed, at least we'll know there's something stalking us." She turns to Losk. "Looks like you'll be reacquainting yourself with your ancestors' underground way of life, dwarf. Let's hope your Sun-Lady's patronage doesn't end where the darkness begins."

That's a sound plan though." and with that, he stands his axe carefully to one side, and starts shifting wood.Nuveril |

Five austere beds line the north wall of this humble office and living quarters. A dented metal chest rests at the foot of each bed, and a simple mosaic pattern of red and orange glass chips brings some color to the wall. A layer of grime and filth coats many of the surfaces in this small room, and the redolent stench of dirty fur hangs heavy in the air.
Nuveril wrinkles her nose at the smell. "Your monkey friends have been in here, it seems," she comments. She takes a quick look around to see if there are any more still hiding.
Updated map? Which room are we in: the one behind the statue of Sarenrae or the big square one?

Nano once again takes a moment to search the room for anything of value.
Nano doesn't find anything, even in the locked chests....
It's getting awfully multiple-personalities in here....
Indeed!
Ok, a bit of DM Fait to skip ahead, there really isn't a lot of interest
Descriptions for the next set of rooms as followed on the map follow, I'll spoiler them to keep the post more readable...
must once have been the monastery’s library. An overpowering odor of musty, rotting paper and old leather fills the air here, and hundreds of books—most too damaged even to open without destroying them—litter the floors. Empty bookshelves line the walls of both levels.
at a touch, one book (Search DC 16 to locate) is very well
preserved. This unusual book is called Courts of Stone and
Flame, and is a treatise on genies of the elemental planes.[ooc]This book would take around a day of study to properly absorb[ooc]
A sweeping bas-relief sculpture along the north wall depicts five bearded, larger-than-life humans riding the wind with triumph carved upon their faces. Though some of their arms and hands are missing, each is clearly meant to wield a distinctive weapon. One of the five warriors holds a large axe, while another holds a fragment of what must once have been a regal staff. In the distance, an ominous mountain looms over the quintet. East of the wall decoration, two open archesl ead into small rooms off the north wall. The south wall is little more than a series of open arches that look out into an open-air courtyard.
Two open arches on opposite ends of the west wall lead out into the ruined nave.
Nuveril |
Nuveril pokes around the ruined library, a look of disgust on her face. She picks up one volume with skeptical interest and flips through it but then tosses it back into the mess with comtempt. "I hope the she-camel doesn't expect us to clear this rubbish out of here to make a place for her to sleep. I haven't seen an area of this 'civilized' construction as clean and fresh as the open land."
By the time the party reaches the freizes around the open courtyard, Nuveril's short supply of patience has been exhausted. She rolls her eyes, sighs, and bounces irritably on the balls of her feet, swinging her weapons through the air restlessly. "This is a waste of my time," she snaps. "If Lady High-and-Mighty weren't intent on sleeping inside a husk tonight, we could be a day closer to Kelmarane!"
Nuveril doesn't have History or Religion knowledges, and though she made her Perception check, she has less than no interest in books -- especially those without pictures and conversations.
Losk Hammertin |
Perception:1d20+3=19, Knowledge Religion:1d20+7=21, no Knowledge History I'm afraid....
As Losk wanders into the library he sees Nuveril tossing the book, with lightning reflexes, he drops his axe to the floor with a clatter, and throws himself across the room to catch the book, landing in a heap of dwarf.
"Bloody Hell Lass, tha'll not treat books like that aroun' me! Especially ones in a Library to ma Goddess!" With that he stomps out into the sunshine of the court yard, and sits down to start looking over the book, checking first that it is properly intact and then looking at the contents.
As the others come outside, he looks pointedly at Nuveril, "She'll need rebinding, but that was true before you picked her oop. I think I'll keep her though, as a remnant of tha people who started this place."
Looking at the images on the walls Losk again speaks up, "Those are genies, 5 of them, that called themselves the Templars of the five winds."

Looking at the images on the walls Losk again speaks up, "Those are genies, 5 of them, that called themselves the Templars of the five winds."
Nuveril spits on the floor, as if to rid her mouth of a bad taste. "Genies! Not to be trusted, foul tricksters. They tempt the weak-minded with promises of decadence and then ensnare them."
Nano Bristlestick |
Nano has been seeming far away during the search of the rooms. He does go around searching the rooms, but he does so absently and without real interest in the things he finds.
As he search the library he finds a crumbled book. Most of the pages is destroyed by time and weather, but one page is intact enough for him to recognize the picture of a gnoll eating of some large bone.
He closes his eyes with a pained expression on his face. Behind his eyelids, his eyes seem to dart back and forth as if having a nightmare.
His face pales and he clutches the page hard, crumbling the fragile old paper. But he seems not to notice that, or any other of his surrounding.
As Losk drop to the floor, he is torn out of his thoughts and suddenly opens his eyes. With a true expression of terror in his eyes he screams "ANUMA!! NO!"
As he regain his senses, he looks around the room remembering where he is. His chins starts to blush, and he tries to cover his outburst in a coughing.
He looks around embarrased and hopes the others didn't notice his scream.
Hey guys. I'm so happy to see this thread still going.
I finally got my connection working, and has seen to some personal stuff so i'm ready to get Nano going again and save Joana before she becomes skitzofrenia.

Let's try the 2 arches into small rooms on the north wall from A4 then.
Tiring of the art, Nuveril peers into the arch near the corner.
Actually that would be the Eastern corner, following on from Monty's re-orientation of the monastery when we first sighted it....Either way, the room closest to the bottom of the map is A12...
The brightly painted walls of this small chapel, probably meant for personal prayer and reflection, stand out as unusually garish for the otherwise reserved architecture notable elsewhere in the monastery. On the walls, numerous rectangular wooden plates traced in gold filigree depict a strapping warrior battling creatures of fire, riding a chariot on the wind, and engaging in other acts of noble heroism. It is the same figure depicted elsewhere in the monastery, but the sheer number of images here suggest that this shrine was especially important to the
clerics who honored him as a saint of Sarenrae. Perhaps a quarter of the gold plates have been pried away or hacked apart by long-absent vandals.
Opposite the door, dominating a section of the north wall, stands a man-sized statue of the warrior, its face marred by what look like numerous blows from an axe. The statue holds both hands in front of him, bent at the elbow, palms up, as if expecting an offering. Several deep rents from similar axe blows make it clear that someone tried to hack the arms from the statue decades ago, but was unable to do so.
Nuveril |
Nuveril nods in approval of the pictures on the walls. "At least the fools who shut themselves up in here had the sense to venerate a true warrior," she says to herself. "Bards' tales can't be stolen, though," she adds, eyeing the empty spaces, "and as long as the tribe endures, a hero's memory can't be destroyed. Here, dwarf," she shouts. "There's another lump of stone in here to pay your respects to."
Losk Hammertin |
"There's another lump of stone in here to pay your respects to."
At Nuveril's words, Losk looks up. He carefully stows the book in his backpack, and moves to look in the room. "Oh, we are investigatin' again are we lassie? Well, that's no statue to ma Goddess, but looks at a glance to be the same guy as outside, a shrine dedicated to him though, very interestin' I'm sure."
With that he moves out of the room, and looks through the next archway, "Ohh, some nice pictures in here too, and seems to lead further in. Shall we follow?"
