Losk watches he small flask strike near the pugwampis and realises what the others are up to, he aims a strike up there...

1d20 ⇒ 101d20 ⇒ 161d6 ⇒ 2

Despite Nano's encouragement, Losk's firebolt misses the oil soaked pugwampis, slamming into the roof of the chapel behind them as they yap excitedly and draw yet more tiny arrows from the quivers they wear. The flash of light distracts Nuveril causing her to flinch slightly just as she releases her javelin which sails harmlessly past the pugwampi king.

Grumbling as she shoots another arrow up at the creature in the rafters, Parvenah is also distracted at just the wrong moment by the explosion of Losk's bolt of fire, her arrow whizzing past the leader's shoulder.

Attack:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15.1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage:1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

With a snarl, the pugwampi leader shouts orders at his underlings, storming over to the ladder angrily and descending to the lower level. Two of his henchman accompany him, seemingly overcoming their fear of Nuveril as they once more draw their tiny daggers and spread out on either side of their king. Two more of the irritating creatures emerge from the canopy above, bows at the ready as they join with their comrade in releasing another volley of arrows towards your group below.

Most of the tiny arrows fly wide, however Losk is hit by one, suffering a minor wound to his arm. Losk takes 1 hit point.

Attacks on Losk:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19.1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Damage:1d3 ⇒ 1.1d3 ⇒ 2

Attack on Parvenah:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage:1d3 ⇒ 1

Here is the updated map. A tad confusing, I'm afraid - the pugwampis enclosed in circles are in the rafters above. The king and the two at F5 and H5 have come down the ladder and are on the ground floor with you. I hope that's clear enough.

Seeing the pugwampis heading down the ladder, Nuveril's face breaks into a fierce grin. "Keep trying to set fire to the beasts with the arrows, dwarf," she commands, "or we've wasted the flask of oil. I'll hold off this 'king.'" She moves to place herself between the base of the ladder and the rest of the party, drawing her scimitar and madu.

I'm assuming we have a bit of time to get ready for them as they're climbing down.

Felicia and Shadrack:

Spoiler:
You have been spending the last few days scouting the region around Kelmarane for Almah and Garavel. There seem to be many creatures living within the abandoned town, although nowhere near as many as could be comfortably housed there. Most are gnolls, bugbears and other humanoids, although you have also spotted one or two humans and half-orcs moving about the town. It's difficult to tell from the ditance you've been observing, however you would guess them to be disreputable mercenary types by the look of them.

Having returned to report to Garavel, you discover the camp is being packed up - the mercenaries are stowing supplies in the wagons and it appears the entire group is preparing to move out.

"We were attacked yesterday," Garavel informs you by way of explanation. "Lady Almah feels this place is too exposed. Agents of ours are currently scouting the abandoned monastery, once secured it should provide us with a much more defensible position. You've worked with Parvenah, we also sent a dwarven priest called Losk and a couple of halflings, Nano and Nuveril - they returned with me from Solku. We havent heard from them in a while and the day wears on."

"I need you to go and find out what the state of play is. Lend what assistance you can and send Parvenah back to make a report - tell them Lady Almah is becoming impatient, we must have the monastery secured by nightfall."

Nuveril wrote:

Well one of the vagaries of a turn based system means such things are difficult to accomodate. Since you and Nano didnt do much last turn, we can assume you two switched places - putting you at F6 and him at G8. It also means you're now in range of the pugwampi at F5 or could five foot step to fight the king at G4 (if you don't mind being surrounded, of course). Hopefully that all makes sense...You're now at F6, Nano you're at G8 and Losk you remain at F7. All of you can post actions for this turn

Shadrach agrees to Garavel's instructions, and quickly bothers Hadrah and Hadrod for any cold, leftover stew to share with Qafir, as rations have left neither of them satisfied.

He is frustrated at having seen no signs of Haleen in his observations, but securing the monastary seems like a sensible position from which to further scout the town.

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

Felicia also agrees to Garavils request and immediately goes about preparing to headout.

Rereading Monty's post, I just realized that the 2 pugwampis on the floor with the king are oil-soaked. Do you have a torch you can spend a round lighting, Nano?

With a feral grin, Nuveril steps into the midst of the pugwampis. "Welcome, your majesty. How nice of you to come down where I can kill you better."

Shadrach and Felicia:

Spoiler:
“Mister Shadrach!” exclaims Hadrah enthusiastically as she doles out some stew for you and Qafir. “And Miss Felicia,” she continues with a deferential bob of her head as the two of you catch a quick bite to eat before heading out to the monastery. “We had quite the adventure while you were gone…”

“Quite an adventure,” interrupts Hadrod, “poor Rothbard…He was lost you know. Kidnapped!”

“Kidnapped by pugwampis,” explains Hadrah. “Nasty little things came into the camp and set fire to the wagons. Poor old Eloiah…” she breaks off, sadly shaking her head at the memory of the fortune teller.

“Indeed, always had a kind word,” agrees her husband. “Awful way to go…”

“An awful way.”

As you prepare, the camp is being packed up around you. The red-armored guards are at their usual station around Almah’s tent and seem more tense than usual. The mercenaries move quickly and quietly about their tasks under Garavel’s direction, talking in low voices as they watch the surrounding scrub. Although you have never ventured inside, you both know the monastery and will be able to reach it relatively swiftly. Once secured it should provide a defensible vantage point from which to observe Kelmarane and its surroundings.

As Nuveril steps forward into their midst, the tiny creatures yelp with alarm. However, as she brings both weapons to bear on the king, Nuveril's attack is spoiled as a stray scrap of burning fabric blows down onto her from the growing blaze in the rafters.

Nano's attempt at igniting one of the oil covered pugwampis is also thwarted, the small door to the lamp swinging open just as he hurls it towards the creatures, the flame dying as it sails through the air.

Shadrach selects the best chunks of stew to hand-feed the fierce looking desert wolf, leaving himself mostly broth, as he can better subsist on rations. He good-naturedly turns from cook to cook as they finish each others sentences, looking somewhat like he is watching some sort of sporting event as his head swivels to regard each speaker in turn.

"If you are ready, Miss Felicia," he says with a smile, using the same form of address used by the cooks, "you should probably lead the way, as it is your area of expertise."

Felicia knows quite well that desert survival and navigation is also Shadrach's 'area of expertise,' and that he's just being silly again. She's gotten the notion in their time together that he's not terribly familiar with halflings, and swings from treating her as if she's younger than he is, to being unnecessarily formal, and coming across as a bit parochial, if not unintentionally condescending...

Losk, glances at his companions, noting their obvious struggle, and nano's distinct lack of magic recently.

"Nano. Nuveril. Move back. The way we came, to the walled Garden. We can defend that. I will come last, and hold them off."

That said, he lets another fire bolt go.

1d20 ⇒ 111d20 ⇒ 181d6 ⇒ 3

As Losk attempts to fire another bolt of fire, he stumbles over the words of the prayer like some novice initiate, his mind going blank at the crucial moment as he sends the spell sailing wide.

Parvenah steps back, firing another arrow at the closest Pugwampi and this time she manages a clean shot. The tough hide of the creature turns away the worst of the attack, however it yelps in pain and is obviously wounded.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12.1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

The one struck by Parvenah makes a dash for the doorway, the King barking an order angrily as it turns and flees. Nuveril can make an attack of opportunity as it leaves

The other pugwampi narrows its eyes and emits a loud, shrill scream, Nuveril's madu vibrating and thrumming in response, shaking violently in the halfling's hand. 1d20 ⇒ 18 With an angry glare, it suddenly cuts off the scream and the vibration ceases, the weapon remaining unharmed.

Finally, the king swings his oversized warhammer at Nuveril, snarling fiercely as those in the rafters pepper your group with tiny arrows. Nuveril is struck by the tiny creature's blow, however he is struggling to handle the oversized weapon and the damage is minor. Nuveril takes 1 hit point damage.

Attack on Nuveril:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Damage:1d6 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Despite a flurry of activity and noise from the rafters above, the tiny arrows shower down amongst you to no effect.

My gosh, these things can destroy our weapons, too? Like the unluck aura isn't bad enough.

Here is the current map. The pugwampis enclosed in circles are in the rafters above.

You can all act for the next round.

Felicia and Shadrach:

After leaving the flurry of activity in the camp, the two of you moved through the scrubland and have now cautiously approached the monastery nave. As you pass through the ruined opening, you can hear sounds of battle and strange, barking calls emanating from the chapel to the east. As you look towards the sound, a tiny ratlike creature with a head like a jackal comes tearing through the doorway, charging towards you with a look of terror in its beady eyes.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

"Flee if you want, dwarf," Nuveril barks, "and you give our enemies time to put out the fires and regroup. I would rather fight his supreme majesty on the ground than face these thrice-damnable creatures in the rafters." She attacks again, focusing all her attention on the pugwampi king in the belief that if he falls the rest will flee but misses again. :P.

"Some sort of immature gnoll?" Shadrach replies with uncertainty, "I have seen nothing of the sort..."

He readies a dagger to throw at the creature, should it prove hostile and begins moving towards the chapel, one hand on Qafir's shoulder, urging restraint.

"We should enter quickly, if those sent ahead are in danger."

Parvenah unslings her backpack and casts it in Nano's direction, the halfling catching it deftly.

"The blue flask, hit the one covered with oil," she instructs him tersely as she readies another arrow and releases it at the pugwampis in the rafters above. "It'll burn to a crisp."

Unfortunately, as she tries to coordinate the action and release her attack, the strap on the backback snags on her quiver and the opportunity is lost.

Parvenah's Attack
To hit:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10.1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage:1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Nano grabs the backpack and pulls out the indicated flask, steadying himself before hurling it towards the nearest pugwampi standing beside Nuveril. The flask cracks open as it strikes the small creature, the oily contents covering it as it staggers backwards, eyes wide. Once exposed to the air, the alchemical fire smolders briefly and then ignites, immolating the creature as it collapses backwards onto the floor.

Nuveril is also splashed by the burning liquid, however the damage is minor and she is easily able to pat out the flame before it spreads too far. Nuveril takes 1 hit point damage.

Nano's Attack
To hit:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19.1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Damage:1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Felicia and Shadrach:

Out in the nave, the fleeing pugwampi catches sight of Felicia and Shadrack and offers a small yelp of alarm. Without slowing, it turns and bolts towards an opening in the wall, disappearing out into the surrounding scrubland.

The two of you hurry towards the sound of combat, entering the chapel to see Parvenah fighting alongside a dwarf and two halflings. More of the strange pugwampis are perched in the rafters, firing down on the group as a larger one engages Nuveril in melee.

Barking orders at his archers above, the king shows no fear as he once more swings his warhammer towards Nuveril, a clumsy blow which she is easily able to avoid.

Attack on Nuveril:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Damage:1d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

The three in the roof release another volley of arrows, yelping and barking with alarm as they see the newcomers arrive in the chapel doorway. Once more the tiny arrows fail to have much of an impact, although Nano suffers a minor wound. Nano takes 2 hit points.

Attack on Losk:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Damage:1d3 ⇒ 1

Attack on Nano:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Damage:1d3 ⇒ 2

Attack on Parvenah:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage:1d3 ⇒ 2

Here are the current positions. The three pugwampis enclosed in a circle are fifteen feet above you in the rafters. The large, curtained off area in the south western part of the room is currently on fire. Although small at the moment, the dry wooden rafters and abundant fabric mean it is in real danger of spreading throughout the roof of the chapel.

Annoyed with the fact that the group seems to be ignoring his obviously wise advice. Losk moves north, (To E4), planting his feet, and intoning a prayer to Serenrae, a cone of fire leaps forth from his hands, engulfing the pugwampi king, and just about missing Nuveril.

Stepping up beside Parvenah, Felicia steadies her bow and releases an arrow into the rafters above. The two archers concentrate on the Pugwampi at J5. Although Parvenah's arrow flies wide, Felicia's hits the tiny creature, making it cry out in pain.

Losk steps up beside the king, his gout of flame washing over him as he tries in vain to twist out of the way. Meanwhile, Nuveril's attack glances harmlessly of his armor as the larger pugwampi turns his attention to his new foe.

The creature Felica struck cowers back from the edge of the platform, looking left and right desperately for some way of escape. Seeing a break in the chapel roof, the miserable creature scurries over and clambers through, disappearing outside as it flees from you.

Undeterred, the other two return fire towards Parvenah and Felicia as the pugwampi king engages Losk with his oversized hammer. The two arrows fail to strike either of their targets, however Losk is caught a nasty blow across the head, ducking only just in time to avoid serious injury. Losk takes 3 damage.

There is a slight shimmer in the air, then a blur of motion as the eagle Shadrach summoned appears with a shriek and streaks toward on of the pugwampis remaining in the rafters. The tiny jackal-like creature's eyes widen in terror as the bird dives towards it, attempting to rip it apart with its talons and beak. Although one of its talons does manage to connect, it appears as though the pugwampi's tough hide is able to turn away most of the damage, leaving it yelping in alarm but unharmed. Having swooped past the two pugwampis in the rafters, the eagle banks as if preparing for a second pass. However, as it does the air shimmers once more and the creature is suddenly gone.

I might have misunderstood the action. When Monty said the king "turned to face his new foe," I assumed Losk was in melee. But he could have just meant the king turned that way but hadn't taken a step; seems he's still in the same square. In any case, she missed, flanking or no, so it doesn't really make a difference to her actions.

Makes a difference for Losk, don't want to cast a spell if he *did* take a 5ft step... :)

Okay, looks like I made a bit of a mess of all of that. Sorry for any confusion...

I posted actions for the eagle for the last round (happily with the same effect as the ones you posted) as I understood the spell to read that the eagle appeared and acted in the casting round during your turn. With a duration of one round it's now gone, hasnt it?

Sorry for all of that. I havent run a lot of PBP battles and this one seems more confusing than most. :/

Nuveril steps into the space behind the king, hoping to force him to split his attention between two foes. Unfortunately for her, Losk's fire still smolders in the area she is in and she inhales some smoke just as she launches her attack, the resultant cough distracting her and preventing any meaningful threat.

Felicia has more luck, her arrow striking the pugwampi and managing to penetrate its tough hide. It gives a tiny yelp, nervously eyeing the hole in the roof its companion has recently fled through as if in two minds.

Okay, looks like I made a bit of a mess of all of that. Sorry for any confusion...

Not a problem, it looks like I was the only one confused, as usual :)

Losk raises his axe as the King moves towards him, flinching at the blow he takes. His eyes light with rage though and he raisies his axe.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 201d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 61d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Slipping though, his axe crashes to the floor, taking a chip out of the stone.

Damn pugwamip, it would be beheaded if that crit was possible, no question!

Shadrach waggles his fingers for a full round, and on the next round, the eagle appears, gets one round of action, and then vanishes at the end of the round. Same effect, just it doesn't appear until the round after the spellcasting.
