Will there be a "Pathfinder OGL"?

Will you allow companies to write games/campaign settings/etc. for the Pathfinder Edition of D&D once its released?

Or is that not how things work?

Liberty's Edge

You can write material using anything published under the OGL, including Pathfinder. You just can't use trademarked stuff like the Pathfinder gods or setting.

I do believe that is the idea. I think the only thing that is not OGL is the pathfinder campaign setting but I could be wrong.

There was, if i remember correctly, some talk of some sort of licence to produce products based in golarie-verse. But i may be wrong on that.

I think I heard something about an OGL-like license that would allow you to specifically say that your product was Pathfinder RPG compatible. Haven't heard anything about a Golarion license, though.

I heard about a Pathfinder license, sort of like the d20 license, and I think I heard that a Golarion license MIGHT be something allowed for very exclusive authors...maybe.

We fully intend to make the Pathfinder RPG as open as the 3.5 SRD. Maybe even MORE open. Paizo is 100% dedicated to the open gaming movement... as far as rules are concerned.

Golarion will not be made open. That's our campaign world, and while we might allow other companies to do stuff for Golarion now and then, those'll be licenses handled separately from the rules themselves.

I can confirm that such a thing is indeed in the works; in fact, it's being looked over by our lawyer as we speak. (It does not, however, allow you to create products using our setting.)

How does fan fiction work with that? It has always been such a gray area to me. By fan fiction I mean something along the lines of stories posted to the net for free.

I would assume that fan adventures set in Golalrion would be right out. No matter what.

The first document I was talking about, the Pathfinder RPG Compatibility License, is nothing more than a license that allows publishers to indicate that their OGL product is compatible with the Pathfinder RPG. It doesn't do anything else.

However, our lawyer is also looking over another document: our Community Use Policy. That will allow non-professionals to use some of our trademarks and other setting material in particular ways; fan fiction and fan-created adventures fall under that policy.

That is really awesome! You do know I am sitting on Pins and Needles waiting for more on that Community Use Policy :)

And no matter what restrictions there are (there HAS to be some to protect Paizo's interests) you guys have already been FAR more fan friendly than just about every other company... anywhere! Just another reason we love you guys *BIG HUG*

ahem- ummm how about them Seahawks?

I completely agree - and that has been a factor that helped me decide to turn my energies toward Paizo instead of Wiz... Very very soon now (hopefully this week), Paizo's RPG will be getting one of the most powerful character sheets available as a Tool for PFRPG Users !! :)

I'll need a copy of that license :D

How would you feel about a video game made with the Pathfinder OGL rules? Once you release your Bestiary, would the legal issues for that still fall under WotC's OGL ruling (If I recall, video games can't be made with WotC's OGL material)?

Oh, and.. post #500!!!

I heard ont he grapevine that Oklahoma City was looking for a pro football team. I guess the Seahawks kinda qualify....

That looks very nice!

I do have a question though. Why do people use Spreadsheets to make Character sheets instead of a database?

I had heard that too... the Oklahoma Seahawks just kind of sound funny though... I think they should try to go for maybe the Oklahoma Cowboys... :)

Wizards' d20 license prohibits "Interactive Games," but there's no such restriction in the OGL.

However, the Pathfinder RPG Compatibility License will only apply to printed books, electronic books, and websites that are freely available to the general public. Anybody wanting to do anything else will need to contact us for a specific license.

So, if you want to translate the Open Content parts of the rules to computer form, I believe that's allowed under the OGL, but if you want to use the word "Pathfinder" on it, you'll need to talk to us. (And if you want to use anything that's not Open Content, including most of our setting material, you'll definitely need to talk to us.)

Off the top of my head:

* Allows people to create their own formulas using Excel as a base, thus allowing for creativity in the creation of Race/Class/Items/Weapons/Shield/Armor/Rings (etc)
* Allows the automation of the rules for character creation (which creates a rule-perfect character much faster then with a Pen & Paper)
* Allows for Dynamic Play (video example of what I mean) for Laptop users.

Note that TOS+ is not designed as a "database" of all existing material - but rather as a time-saving tool to facilitate Character Creation & Maintenance.

I imagine because the skill set required for a spreadsheet is more common than those for databases.
