Assuming you collect the chest and give Sylvia the box.
bad assumption, right now this box is the only leverage and bargaining chip we have and I want to know what we're dealing with before I go willy nilly handing dangerous boxes to green dragons.
I tell you what, why don't you lead us to mommy and I'll decide what to do when we get there.
in the meantime wherever "mommy's" house is I want to know where the nearest cliff is, we're on a small island so it can't be too far from the shore, also are there any latches or openings on this box, if worse comes to worse I'm hoping being able to open it is enough of a threat to keep them in line

Okay, small time warp to fix this. Small forested island, and I don't have a map for this place. Through experimentation, you find no way to open the box, but Sylvia doesn't know that.

thanks, worse case scenario I want to be able to throw it off the edge of a cliff so that they either have to go after it giving us time to escape, or kill us and loose the box. Barring the ability to do that I'm hoping it's smashable if that's the only thing that will keep it out of a green dragon's hands

Kora cringed at the sudden turn of events. "Cayden's sake, man! Didn't you see what she did to that lock? You wanna go upsetting a kid that can do something like that?" she whispered furiously. "Hell, it wouldn't be hard for mommy to find out where we live if she's this close to town!"
That'll go over great in Sandpoint, she thought. Bringin' a dragon down on all our heads...

whispering backYes it's so much better to save our own necks and hand over some powerful evil artifact to an evil dragon, because that won't have terrible reprocussions.

"Yes, and I'm sure we would have no problem keeping said artifact from said dragon, if it desired to just take it from us. In the process making it angrier, as well."
Elijah Blair |
Everyone is assuming it's an artifact...[evil dm laugh]
Incorrect, I've assumed nothing so far. As far as I'm concerned it's probably the draconic version of a German chocolate cake. Considering that the young lady is part green dragon maybe an emerald of exceptional size... in the end it doesn't matter I entered an accord, which I intend to keep.
Sehkola |
Everyone is assuming it's an artifact...[evil dm laugh]
Sehkola was just repeating how Gavrin described it ... knowing you, I have learned to assume nothing! :-) The last time I assumed anything, an Alien dropped off the ceiling; ain't gonna let that surprise me again!
Kora Oaks |
Kora tried to give Sylvia a disarming smile, something very difficult for her to manage, before turning to the others. "Okay, we're gen'rally agreed on not pissin' her or her mother off, right? So how's about we hurry up and make nice with her already?"
As far as she was concerned, one more misstep meant that they and possibly a good portion of Sandpoint would be living on borrowed time.
Gavrin Bighit Norbera |
Everyone is assuming it's an artifact...[evil dm laugh]
nope not assuming that at all, just running on the assumption that it could be one. Just like I don't assume her mother is a green dragon, but she could be.
still whispering And just so you know I'm working on the threat of dropping it off a cliff or just breaking it if need be. which mean elijah keep that hammer of yours at the ready. I'm not saying we aren't handing over the box, but I'm playing this a lot more cautiously than you longshanks are aparently. And can someone detect magic on this damned thing already?
Sehkola |
Sehkola wrote:Sehkola uses detect magic on the inside contents, to see which items gave off the previous aura when the chest was closed.
"Yes, I think we should meet your mother," he says, assuming Gavrin's grab for the box doesn't make the child do to him what she did to the goblins earlier ...
The scrolls and the dagger shine with faint magic, though the blade's aura is slightly stronger.
"Oh, mommy will be so happy to meet yo- Give me that box! You have no idea what you are holding!!" Seeing Gavrin grabbing the box causes Sylvia to become furious. Despite her strong words however, you can hear fear in her voice.
Not "its a bomb" fear, more like "Please don't drop it!" fear.
Ummm ... I did cast detect magic on everything ...

"This way then." She eventually leads you a well made house, outside of which a beautiful elven woman sits at a table, reading by candle.
"Mommy, we're here!" The elven woman looks up with a charming smile on her face, and hurries into the house. She emerges with chairs and enough food for everyone.
"Why hello there! You must be tired after walking all the way here. Come, eat and rest yourselves. It has been such a long time since we've had guests. Feel free to stay the night."
And so the adventurers continue on, not aware of what is about to happen...

No thank you, I have no interest in your food nor rest really, we have a rather traumatized child here and I think it's best that we sort this out and get him to his mother as soon as possible, as a mother yourself I'm sure you'll understand. Now if you would please kindly reveal your true form and tell us about this box.

"Good day Mi'Lady... as you can plainly see my friend here tries to make up for his stature with his mouth, however he is a very good man and well worth putting up with. We met your daughter earlier and agreed to get the box for her while on our way to rescue this child... speaking of which I'm afraid I'll have to decline your offer of hospitality for today as we need to get the child home as quickly as possible." Elijah continues, "However we were curious about what was in the box, your daughter suggested we just ask you about it as she wasn't allowed to say, and we didn't want to get her in trouble. I also had another motive for wanting to meet you: I don't think it is just goblins living in those caves -- we ran across a monsterous creature that had acid for blood in there and two humans with magical powers... as well as a disembodied voice that seemed to have a connection to the humans... I wanted to tell you about this in case you might have some thoughts on it, or needed warning of it."
Elijah keeps his voice even while presenting his information trying to sooth over any rough feelings.

"Yeah, what he said." Kora added after Elijah, thankful that one of them could at least sweettalk the...whatever she really was. She wasn't taking appearanced for granted tonight.
"Yeah well, guess we better be takin' him home then. Guess we need to hand that box over too, eh?" she said looking squarely at Gavrin.

What is this box that needs to be "safe" before opening? And you still haven't revealed yourself, unless that is, this is your true form. My companions seem to think I am being rude and if so I apologize, but I am merely trying to be direct while at the same time getting along quickly. However you'll understand if after what we encountered and seeing your daughters true form, I am a little suspicious. Not that your daughter hasn't been upfront with us, she has, I am just trying my best to puzzle out what I see as a very troubling situation. So again, kindly either let us know that this is your true form, or reveal yourself and explain to us what this box is.
As an aside as quietly as possible Sehkola are you going to detect magic on her or what?
Sehkola |

"No, I do not see the need. Judging by her daughter, she is either an elf or a dragon. If she is an elf, detect magic tells us nothing. If she is a dragon, then I do not wish to anger her. For that matter, even if she is an elf, she and her daughter live near goblins, monsters with acid for blood, and other powerful beings, without having been too bothered. I think either way, I do not wish to anger her."

"What is inside that box is very precious to Sylvia and myself, more than you could guess. As for showing you my true form? You seem to be the only one to ask, so you shall see." She walks over to Gavrin, and gently puts a finger to his forehead. Images fill his mind, several creatures can be seen, but the same image does not stay clear in his miind for long. Before to long she breaks contact with Gavrin. "I hope that answers your question, now may I please be allowed to open the box in a safe place? You do need to return the child home."
Elijah can find no trace of evil on her, or(if you check again) Sylvia.

and what exactly is it that it needs to be opened in a "safe" place? Please understand I am not stalling because I wish to cause you fear or displeasure, I just do not feel comfortable handing over magic items to strangers without some inkling of what it is that I'm dealing with. But know that so long as I feel comfortable that it is of no threat to sandpoint that I swear I will hand it over.

"I only wish to keep it from being stolen again. In time, what resides in this box could grow to one of the greatest defenders Sandpoint has ever seen, as will Sylvia", she says, looking fondly at Sylvia trying to play peek-a-boo with Chayton.

::Sense motive d20+2=4:: Very well I believe what you say, but I would point out that you continue to efusively avoid actually answering my question as to what it is.
and who or what is Chayton?
Kora Oaks |
and who or what is Chayton?
He's the child we came to rescue.
Kora let out a sigh of relief when things seemed to calm down and at Elijah's reassurance.
"So, uh...yer daughter kill goblins that often?" she ventured with her idea of polite conversation.

"I must add to Kora's question, if I may," Sehkola asks. "I hope I am not seeming rude, but with the amount of magical power you and your daughter seem to posses, why did you require us to get the box back for you? I would think you would be able to easily retrieve it. I know we discussed this a bit before, but I am a bit of a slow learner," he says with a big grin.
Dragonborn3 |
"Sylvia was only protecting you from an ambush, she isn't strong enough to do so often. As to why we could not claim the box? Something keep us from the caves, we couldn't enter them no matter how hard we tried. I'm not being elusive on purpose, friend gnome, that is just my nature. If I show you what is in this box you can be at ease knowing it is not something of evil make."
Dragonborn3 |
If you can show me while I still hold it yes, that would satisfy me. And once satisfied I will hand it over.
"...Fine." She reaches down and places her hand on the box, moving it from one side to the other. The top of the box slowly fades from sight, revealing a shimmering silver egg nestled on blue velvet. She strokes it gently, as if looking for imperfections. "Is this enough to satisfy you, friend gnome?"
Kora Oaks |
Kora stared in awe at the sight, but quickly put two and two together. She leaned in close to Gavrin and whispered, "Don't. Drop. It."
She remembered her father nearly going after another dockworker with a hatchet after accidentally knocking her off a pier. She suspected this "lady" had a bit more than a hatchet at her disposal.
Gavrin Bighit Norbera |
Hmph, could be a green dragon egg, but at the worst it's no immeadiate threat, take it, I'm good to my word. Gavrin still not 100% comfortable, grudgingly holds out the box for her. Once taken from his hands he turns to his companions and says We should be going now, we've kept our promise and that child needs to get back to his mother before anything worse happens to him, to the lady thank you for your hospitality may the fates see to you favorably.
Dragonborn3 |
may the fates see to you favorably.
"May they smile upoun you as well. If you ever need any help, do not hesitate to ask." She quickly moves the box and the egg within into the house. Sylvia ends her game with Chayton and waves goodbye before going back into the island's forest.
