"T-thank you, sir." Tenna replied instinctually to Herve before taking the wallet and placing it in her pouch.

Scrubbing at his eyes and sniffling and mumbling under his breath "damn colds" Bluff check 8 Bogorin returns Nagina's nod with one of his own in appreciation. His eye light up for a minute at the mention of Holy Water but then anger and disappointment cloud his features and he sniffs "T'ont need nae Holy Water. N' de boy's rite, us Dwarfs unt need no light tae see by inna dark needer." He does take the herb ball passed to him though and sniffs it and grunts. He then adjusts his armour, again, and curses under breath, again, and says "Carter…seems tae me 'ahap I do recall sumthin' o where he be at." "Here Willy. Why don't you take one and Bogorin take the other and why don't Tenna, Herve, and Willy take the vials. I hear dwarves are able to see in the dark and my eye-sight is better at night than most."

Talden

Spoiler:
Herbal ball are a druidic concoction essentially a potion of cure light wounds but designed so it can be eaten instead of drunk, the salve was probably made by the same person which is why Nagina warned you about using both, since it might constitute an overdose.

Talden, noticing that Bogorin set off in the wrong direction, steps down to the street.

"Hey Bogorin. Assuming we're heading to Old Carter's place I know a shortcut that will save us a few minutes but its this way" he says motioning in the opposite direction.

Turning to the group and addressing Nagina Talden says, "Ready when you are. Feel free to lead the way."

Without missing a beat the old dwarf turns around mid-step and says “Eye ‘new that o course! Jus testn yur sens o derectshun lad. Ye’ve passed! “ and he slyly winks at the young man as he stomps on by in the Right direction.

oh and Hopeless, i've left a couple posts for you on the ooc thread if you wouldn't mind taking a look?

Bogorin:

Spoiler:
The character is fine but I believe warrior's have a d10hd and your helmet only provides a +1 AC bonus against either headshots or attacks by large or even bigger sized foes, otherwise fine.

Turning to the group and addressing Nagina Talden says, "Ready when you are. Feel free to lead the way."

"I don't actually know where Old Carter lives, but he did say to meet him by the perimeter where the guardpost is at the edge of Waypoint," Nagina nods.

Nagina proceeds to head towards one of the guardposts located near one of the exits from Waypoint, barely a minute or two before you notice a group of horses tethered outside and a familiar figure (to some of you) arguing with someone outside the guardpost.

"Just make sure it goes to a good family you hear Henry?" Old Carter blusters.
"But what about when you return man?" the guard argues back.
"Somethings must be seen through to the 'nd and you know these whippersnappers these days couldn't tell the end of a sword from its point!" he argues back.
Old Carter is an aging Kelishite he looks more like a carpenter than a veteran soldier but the studded leather armour he's wearing has seen alot of use and the battelaxe he has strung over his back looks just as well worn.
If it wasn't for the folded up sleeve on his right hand side you wouldn't have believed he had only one arm from the way he's behaving.
The guard he's arguing with looks a little younger but seems just as experienced however he's clad in decent chain mail and has a scabbarded longsword and dagger at his belt across his back is a well worn wooden shield.

To Talden and Bogorin

Spoiler:
Henry is Henri Val Morr, he's was a Captain in the Olfden guards who retired here about five years ago, he came out of retirement to command Waypoint's militia at Old Carter's request and was on patrol at the time of the raid

To Tenna and Willy

Spoiler:
Henri is head of Waypoint's guards and the reason there is still a settlement here with all of the raiding thats been happening

Old Carter was pretty riled up about something and Talden didn't want to get in the middle of it but as he catches the last of Carter's words he begins to worry. Carter must have been talking about the reward and he seemed to think that he wouldn't make it back. Was the situation worse than everyone thought? It made Talden think of how the Lumber Consortium had deceived the townsfolk about the danger of the orc bandits and the number of people who died because of it. Talden began to get angry. Carter's last remark made Talden even angrier and he was about to say something smart about how fortunate it was that none of them were wielding swords when it occurred to him that things would only get harder for everyone if he angered or insulted Carter so instead he decided to cut to the point.

"Pardon my intrusion Carter sir. I couldn't help but overhear what you just said and I was wondering: is the situation that bad?"

Ninja'd while typing! lol (I pre-typed his Next post too ;-)

Never having been a dwarf to miss out on what looks like a good argument and as well still being mightily worried and scared, Bogorin sees someone to lay his own guilt and blame on and charges right up to the bickering pair. Though normally he had not ever had any problems with Henry and in fact has shared more than a few pints with him over the years, Bogorin, his face red, nevertheless charges right up to the man, shakes his warhammer in his face and shouts “ ’N Where ‘N de Bloddy Blazes Wuz You When Me Poor Dale wuz Gittin Ogre Snatched! Eh?”

Then, at Talden's words, before Henry or Carter or anyone else has a chance to reply, the Old Dwarf suddenly whirls on his much younger companions and growls

“What do the likes of ye know! A course it's Bad! Dis t’aint no berry pickin lark ‘n de forest we be on! I reckon none o ya’s eer e’en seen a nasty Gobbo let alone an Orge up close! And this time he is not ashamed, or is too angry, to care about the moisture which wells up in his eyes.

Old Carter briefly nods to Henry as he turns to the horses.
"Not here," he tells Talden.
"We need to make a move, once we're clear we'll be in a better position for explanations and rescue opportunities," he says to the rest.

To Bogorin:

Spoiler:

"Someone's on the take," Old Carter mutters in dwarf.

"Pick a mount from those available, the packs have enough rations for at least a week depending on need and can carry whatever else you got on yer' once yer' ready we'll head out we need to reach Dead Man's Hollow before the sun gets too close to dusk if we want any chance of success," Old Carter tells them as he swings up onto the mount he's selected.

Herve address himself to Carter
Do you have long spears in there . Having a reach weapon who can also be set against charge could be useful.

Turning back to the rest of the company :
Who amongst you has never rode a horse or a pony? It will help Mr Carter chooses more placid mounts for you. I know the basics of riding personally and I might never have fought against an ogre but I know how to fight. Saying so, Herve make his banded armor clonk with his fist

"If we catch it in the open sure, but we're heading for its den and there's little room for those things, least of all you are wanting to rescue those three after all?" Old Carter grumbles back as he mounts his horse and prepares to move out.

"People we need to be moving those packs have a pair of sunrods in them they're good for a few hours use them to mark your way, I take it that girl's given you some vials?" he asks abruptly.

"One over there if need be," Henry nods looking towards the other side of the guardpost where an old wagon lie disused but still whole enough in appearance.

"It'll be a bumpy ride if you use that," Old Carter warns them.

Female Human (Chelish) Commoner 1/Ranger 2

Tenna was getting worried with all the tension between the hunting party members. It seemed like tempers were getting dangerously close to boiling over.

"I never rode before." she admitted. "You just climb on, right?" She really wasn't sure. How do you make 'em do what you want?

Seeing no one really reply to his tirade, the wind seems to go out of Bogorin's sails a bit. At least it looked like they were finally about to be off anyway. Then, when Carter mentions Riding, on Horses, the poor old dwarfs face blanches as white as his beard. He stammers "Eh, 'oi, erm, dat is, I'll be helpn' the big ox 'ere ta 'ook up 'is wagon. We'll likely need it tae bring back our friends an enna treasure as we finds, rite?" And he moves over with Willy to get the wagon set up.

But I t'anit known no oak wot c'nae be cut down with a handy axe" As he pats the smaller weapon on his side. He then sticks out his calloused, worn yet still strong hand. Willy goes over to the other horses and takes the contents out of the saddlebags of two of them and puts the stuff on the wagon. Then, with Bogorin's help, he hitches the same two horses to it and gets into the driver's seat.

"Come on Bogey, get in! Anybody else wanna ride?!"

Hearing Tenna's hesitance about the horses Talden walks over and offers his assistance. He wasn't a particularly accomplished rider but he had a little experience and figured he would share what knowledge he had.

"I can give you a hand if you would like Tenna. Horses are pretty simple creatures at heart and most of them will take their lead from their rider. Show them some trust, a firm voice and a steady hand and they'll do what you ask. He takes a quick look through the saddle bags, making a mental note of their contents and transferring the sunrods to his backpack and his extra blanket and arrows to the saddle bags, before pulling himself up and mounting.

I'm going to include the horse and provisions in my inventory and update locations accordingly.

You can store up to three long spears if you want on the wagon without the Mounted Combat feat using such a weapon whilst mounted could prove more dangerous to even a skilled rider, however the option remains open

"Thanks. Sir." Tenna hastily appended as she was helped into her saddle. For a moment she wasn't sure she really meant it when she realized she was on top of a large animal that, if it had a mind to, could do whatever it wanted while she was stuck in the saddle. In her mind she knew she wasn't that high up from the ground, but actually being there had a way of making it seem much further.

Even so, the excitement of riding for the first time was beginning to creep up on her, despite all the worries about the other hunting party members and their quarry. There was the faintest hint of childlike joy in her eyes, something that was rarely present there, as she turned to Talden and said, "Um, I'll just follow yer lead then." The half-elf seemed to be the most dependable among those present that she already knew. She decided to err on the side of familiarity and stick close to him, intending to follow his lead on more than riding the horses.

I've never been a real fight before. And now we might face an ogre and a band of goblins? Gods, I half hope we don't find them. That thought shamed her more than a little, but she knew she meant it.

Talden was shocked to hear the news. He hadn't heard that both of Carter's sons had died and now he understood why Carter was in such a rush. Herve mounts one horse and takes the rear position for the time being

Boy it does feel good to be back on one horse !
He does a quick perusal of his new command .
Tenna , a little shy but it's normal for a new recruit. Seems to be worried about the group dynamics but still press one . no real worry there yet .
Talden , hum , friend to everyone but Herve decides to keep an eye of him . Bravado turns to fear too quickly in some people
Bogo . experienced at first sight but a little too involved emotionally . Still a dwarf tends to keep his head on his shoulders . Herve ponders if the situation would have a relation to why he took to drink . Given the dwarves reputation , it takes a lot to make a dwarf become a drunkard
Willard could be a problem . Still for the moment , he seems more boisterous than bully. No sign of being a lecher , thanks Iomedae ! In any case , Tenna could be cowed by him in doing the chores but pity the fool if he tries to go further , the girl has hidden backbone
Could be a worst first command , he thinks to himself , wonder if the barmaid is pretty ...

About an hour into the journey Old Carter comes to a stop and he points somewhat due North-north-east where a hill coming into view brings a sense of unease into you all.

"There's some kind of nest atop of that hill, noone I know of has ever bothered with that route, the front entrance is usually blocked during the night but there's sentries there day and night, however there is back way into the place IF you want to sneak in that is," Old Carter gestures towards the hill.

"Been meaning to ask yer if you have any questions you want me to answer given you do know I have serious misgivings with whats been going on?" Old Carter then announces looking around.

As the group leaves town heading towards Falcon's Hollow Talden thinks back on his last adventure and how different this one was already. He spends most of his time quietly remembering his first adventure, the fear, the mishaps, and the fights when Old Carter turns off the road and heads north. Snapping back to reality Talden realizes that he needs to focus on the current task and not the past.

"Carter sir. I'll be honest. I have a lot of questions. Bala'Datha mam and Henry sir mentioned that you seemed to know where the ogre lives and that you've known about him for some time." He hesitated for a moment. Talden had a lot of questions and wasn't sure how to proceed and figured it would be best to start with the where and the whats.

"How far is the ogre lair from town and what kind of place is it? Also, do you know how many goblins there are and is there anything else besides them? If you've known about them for a while why was nothing done sooner and why have they only now just started attacking us? Frankly, I feel like you or someone is hiding a lot about what is happening here and while that won't stop me from trying to get Dale and Jonas back it isn't right that we increase the risk by not having all of the information. We need to know what to expect and have as much information as possible."

"Pardon Herve. But since Tenna has the pouch with the healing salves and is a crack shot with her bow why don't Old Boggo or I take the other spear? We can fight in front while she shoots them with her bow. Although, we should probably just ask Tenna what she would prefer to do."

Tenna looked uncomfortable with being put on the spot. She looked to Herve apologetically, "I'm not really used to fightin' with spears, sir." She glanced at Talden. She had not forgotten his request that she speak to him as an equal, but the nobleman had not given her permission to do so, and she did not want to presume too much.

"If everyone thinks it's a good idea, I can take one. It's just...all I've ever used is my da's bow and my sling. I only ever had to use my knife once..." Her hand reflexively went to the scar on her mouth, remembering the terrifying moment that gave it to her.

She could still remember that wolf's breath...

Herve looks at Willard a little surprised but after Talden's speech
'Sorry , people , my mistake here . do keep to the weapons you're more used to . Talden , it would be better to keep you at the rear just in case ! '
To himself
Damn, Two raw recruits !

Enjoying the big lad’s easy (if perhaps unfounded) confidence, Boggo laughed along with him. It felt good to forget about his worry for Dale, if even for a moment “Nay boyo, dem pig sticker’s t’aint fer me. Mind ye, I ‘ave seen Dwarven Spear ranks do some mitey fine damge tae a wall o’ screamn’ Orcs. But, me? Na, I prefers ta Mash ‘Em.” As he fondly pats his mighty warhammer. Looking at the lumberjack’s grin, Bogorin was of a mind to add something else, for cutting down Ogres and Goblins was Not the same as cutting down trees. But he changed his mind thinking ’Nae, de lad’ll find it out soon e’nou hisself. Tis da best way.’

The old dwarf then smiled to himself as he discerned by his manner and words how the lordling styled himself to be the leader of this group. He’d known the type before. Pampered and trained in all the best schools, and probably a fair hand with that brand new looking axe or sword of his…on a training ground. The Truth would come to the fore right thought it would with 500 lbs of screaming Ogre in his face. Then they’d see what type of ‘leader’ he turned out to be. The Dwarf couldn’t help a naughty little chuckle.

Bogorin didn’t know Carter all that well. He did fuzzily remember hearing about the poor man loosing both his sons. First his arm and then both his only sons, that’d have to play on a man something fierce. But Talden ‘s astute questions did have the effect of cluing Bogorin into the fact that the old hunter was acting strange even given his recent tragedies and he could help calling out “Yea, ‘n if’n ye know aught ‘bout why dey took me Dale ye better tell us all ye know right now!”

Frankly, I feel like you or...

"He's been here for at least five years by my count, they first started raiding Waypoint three years ago but someone didn't want anyone knowing about it, usually they hit caravans heading from the Eagle Knights stronghold down towards Olfden or those coming from Falcon's Hollow never directly Waypoint until then. I know this because I survived one of those raids and I lost good friends and family during those attacks and the previous attempts to stop them, but back then they didn't know about the Ogre... or Otis," Old Carter looks so sad he seemed even more older than you previously thought.

"Someone at Waypoint is feeding them information, I don't know who but I do know they've got a stranglehold on someone in the Consortium enough to keep it quiet but something else is going on," Old Carter adds.

"You can ask them yourself," Old Carter sighed.

"Remember what I said that hill over there, three passages, one above where there's a nest, the one near the back is a rear entrance keep those vials handy if you try that route the front entrance is always guarded..." he mutters to them almost too calmly.

What Willy has seen:

Spoiler:
You notice where he's looking and realise there's alot of tracks on the ground considering you know Waypoint enough to know no resident of that settlement made those tracks even if you can't tell how long they've been there.
The other detail is that you spot a number of figures now coming into view surrounding the wagon and the riders most of whom look like goblins except they're strangely quiet almost as if mesmerised.

"Oh crap! Look at that. Do you see them?" Willy nudges Bogorin

Nudged out of his Glare at Carter, Bogorin sees the strange looking Goblins and jumps on the bench on the wagon, readying his warhammer and shield as he yells " Goblins! Time tae earn yer pay youngins!"

Oddly enough, suddenly the old dwarf appears happier than anyone has seen him be in some time.

You mean Tenna, right? ;)

Tenna frowned as Old Carter spoke of someone keeping the matter of the raids quiet. The idea of someone from Waypoint betraying the town like that both angered and worried her. And this has been going on for years?! She wondered at the mention of "Otis" when everyone started looking around.

Perception: 7

Bogorin's shouting sent her reaching for her bow as she jerked her head around, frantically trying to see what they had spotted. Where are they?! She twisted in her saddle, seeming to be about to attempt to dismount. She wasn't sure she wanted to be on the horse if it panicked.

"Do you know why they've started attacking Waypoint and who is Otis? Speak up old man!" Talden says getting angry at the prospect that someone in Waypoint would willing betray the town.

Is the name Otis familiar to Talden? Is there anyone in town name Otis that Talden might know of or has heard about? Knowledge: Local check = 14
