So the real question here is: out of those, say, 25000 (the economy's bad this year) attendees, how many of them wound up with a Pathfinder Beta? I doubt we'll ever know. Companies are usually loath to share sales figures with the general public. If it's 1000 or more, that's gotta be a phenomenal success, especially considering the breakneck speed at which they sold out.

While I won't give you the exact number, it was more than twice the highest sales we have ever had on a single product at GenCon. It was also close to the number of copies of Werewolf that White Wolf sold in the early 90's, or at least I think it is. Stupid memory gets fuzzier as I get older. ;) So, a bunch! And I bet we could have sold 3 to 4 times that number! Who knew that a Beta would get that kind of attention? I remember when we first proposed printing the Beta, we were actually getting quotes for 1,000 and 2,000 copies. Boy, am I glad I went with a much larger print run! :)

I can't say for sure, but based on this, I'd say more than 1,000.
Congratulations Paizo! You prove on a daily basis that you're the best in the business (or any other business I've ever dealt with, for that matter). ^_^

I have been scrolling through my PDF, and am EXTREMELY happy with this product. There are very minor issues to be cleaned up but over all PRPG is very nicely done. I am not the least bit surprised they sold out.
My friends at Dwarven Sweatshoppe, Booth #1331 have been doing well also. We tripled have doubled last years sales and things look great. SO, if you are at the Con get to Booth #1331 and get one of the last high quality Dice trays left.

Well, I bought 4 copies, 1 for me and 3 for friends who couldn't make it, so the % of Gen Con attendees who bought a copy would actually be lower and misleading compared to the number of copies sold at Gen Con, since I know I wasn't the only one buying multiple copies.

The pdf is free yet you guys sold out? That's fantastic news.
I personally am waiting for the finished product a year from now. The Beta will be outdated very soon so I'll just use the pdf.
The fact that so many want to buy and hold it in their hands right now is so cool. Im very happy for you guys. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I got one bought for me (I also have one coming in the post...).

It'll be interesting to see how much does change by the final version, actually. It may be that the Beta is still useful, but I am planning to use the Beta in the meantime so I want a couple of bound copies (and I know I could dl the free pdf and get it printed and bound myself, but that's hassle and I'd rather send some money Paizo's way than give it to Kinko's).

I had an acquiantance in high school who once quoted someone as saying "U2 will never sell out!"
To this day, I have no idea which way he meant it, but clearly they have done so in one way, but arguably so in another.
arguably? *cough*vertigoipodcommercial*cough*
mine shipped friday apparently, so i'll have mine by the end of the week (i hope, as kirth and i hope to get a playtest going this weekend...)

Not so sound like a shameless shill (which, of course, I am), but I strongly urge anyone interested in a print copy of this book try to pick it up as soon as possible. It hits game stores next week, and as of yet we have no intention of selling them through the book trade (meaning Amazon will be a no-go). We just don't have enough of them to risk any of them getting tied up in a distributor's inventory.
Game and comic shops, Gen Con and Gen Con UK, and Paizo.com, basically. After the frenzy at Gen Con I am absolutely certain we printed far, far too few of the book (and we made an aggressive assessment based on sales of our other products).
The audience for the Pathfinder RPG, even an unfinished playtest version thereof, is MUCH LARGER than the audience for the monthly Pathfinder volumes, which are among the highest in the industry.
I had a hunch that the game was going to be bigger than we expected all along, but after Gen Con I am absolutely sure of it.
We are going to strongly consider reprinting the Beta, but this is a lengthy and expensive enterprise. Even if I gave the order tomorrow (and I might), it'd be at least two months before the book would end up on store shelves.
If you want a print copy of the Beta rules, now is the very best time to order.

Yeah I am still on the fence on if I want to pick it up.. Though I am getting all your products, I don't have a gaming group right now..and the prospects of finding one in the next year are low since I have not been able to find a steady group for the last 2 1/2 years..*you would think being in the largest military community in Europe it would be no problem finding a group!*, so I am not sure I would get any use of the Beta.. But I really want to!!!...Damn War!!! it is taking all my players!!!

I think you may have underestimated the backlash against 4E.
My girlfriend was off doing the miniature painting classes and told me she overheard no less than four different people in different sessions complain about 4E and that "they were going with Pathfinder from here on out". I was asked at least twice once I mentioned I really didn't like 4E if I was going Pathfinder. It's amazing that without even prompting people seem to assume you're going Pathfinder if you're not going 4E.

I've been thinking that my guess was right, that the audience for Pathfinder might be as much as 20% of 3e's. Figure 1/3 of 3e players won't go 4e, and then about half of those won't want to go Pathfinder for one reason or another. That's still a huge market by RPG standards.

What about those of us who have preorders with book trade retailers - mine is with BooksAMillion (that way I can support Paizo, and a locally-owned company at the same time)? Will those orders be cancelled?

I picked mine up Thusday afternoon from the gen con booth and am very glad that I did. The local gaming store in my area seems to find itself split about 50/50 for 4e vs not. I would say definitely more than half of the nots are looking seriously at pathfinder. I decided that I needed to pick up the print copy even though I can get the free pdf (and did in the alpha testing) because I much prefer to do my reading from a book and not from the computer. THere was soo much to do at gencon I just haven't been able to read it fast enough, but I'm working on it. I also want to say that I do everything in my power at my game store to put my two-cents in the corner of the company I think has the best product going (though I do like Monte Cook's game too.

Now I accidentally deleted my post while pursuing you to the customer service section to copy/paste it there in case you didn't notice it here. This is to confirm that you're sane.
Also, you're not the first person to be freaked out by my fast reply abilities.
EDIT: it appears you deleted your post too . . . Now I'm getting the paranoid "am I crazy" feeling I always get when I've replied to a nonexistent post.

I always try to live by the "does it add anything to the conversation?" mindset, and in review felt that it didn't. Then when I saw yours was gone, then I deleted mine. So, who's going to delete next?
PS: My vote for "Best conversation we never had ..."

Good question. I am not sure about this. We may release a small number to cover existing orders only. I'll check into this and let you know soon.

I got my copy of the print version in the mail yesterday and let me say that it is a must have if you are going to be running Pathfinder games the next year. Having the print copy in hand is so much better than just trying to read the pdf from the computer. Let me also say that the quality of the product is much better than I expected given the incredible $24.95 price. In any event, let me encourage anyone that doesn't have one yet to get one. I would bet my bottom dollar that their warehouse stock of these won't last a month.

OK, So I could not go to Gen Con this year. Therefore, I sent a friend to the Paizo booth pick me up a copy of the Beta. I saw this thread and I was concerned that I did not get a copy.
He came to work today with my copy and said it was a birthday present.
He told me that this copy was THE LAST copy sold at Gen Gon.

My preorder is with Amazon... damn, I don't know if my FLGS will have enough copies if I can't get it via Amazon! :(
And my players should get their copies, too... (can't have their greedy, sticky fingers leaving greasy prints all over my DM's copy, can I? ;))
