I'm giddy and I may be offline for a while as I delve into it's depths! My initial impression (based solely upon the table of contents and the pretty pictures inside) very classy looking!
Darrin, please let us know more of your impressions when you get back from your "delve!" This is my #1 "must-buy" when the exhibit hall doors open at Gen Con.

This is what I keep telling myself... as I hit refresh on my email and my My Accounts page for the 4th time Today....
I just subscribed Friday because I wanted to start with SD and the Campaign setting... so I'm likely at the end of the queue. *Sigh*

I've made it through the non-human races so far. I tried to get farther last night, but fatigue got the best of me and I crashed out while I was trying to read. So far so good, though.

You may want to doublecheck with customer service to make sure that your subscription will start with the CS. I wouldn't take the chance if it were me.

Also, Dennis DaOgre, I don't see a subscriber tag next to your name, so you might want to check to make sure that you are actually, indeed, subscribed.
He's posting using an alias. I'm a superscriber, as you can see by my avatar border, but my tag isn't displayed (I really wish there were some way to switch my "main" name with my alias).

How's the production value? How's it holding up?
So far the book seems very sturdy and isn't falling apart on me. The pages are what you would normally expect from the Pathfinder AP in terms of page weight, color, gloss, etc. The map is a little heavier. The art is excellent. The writing is compelling and the editing is good (I've only spotted a couple of minor issues so far, one of which is just an extra space at the beginning inside of a parenthesis, so not anything terribly noticeable).
Now that I'm several entries into the human races now, I can say that they are all notable and memorable. When the text mentions a Cheliaxian, I'll remember what makes them distinct from an Azlanti, for example, because their history, appearance, and cultural differences are enough to for me to easily keep them straight.

Yeah, patience isn't one of my virtues.
The strange thing is that I received the "download-email" for Pathfinder #12 and #13, The Curse of the Crimson Throne Map Folio and the Pathfinder Companion - Second Darkness, but no Campaign Setting! I don't want to wait another month or longer!!!!!

I keep my subscriber tags under wraps, it's brand new and I haven't even taken the plastic wrapping off of it. I figure if I keep it put away it will keep that new tag shine for longer. I'll bring it out on special occasions. It's not as valuable as a "Charter" tag but it's certain to be a collectable.

Yeah, it would be nice to at least make a preferred alias. So I don't have to swap them all the time.

Right now they are swamped. My order shows a $50 charge this month so I'm going to take the order system at it's word. If it doesn't ship in a day or two after they've had a chance to work their way through the queue I'll drop them a note.
It would have been nice to have had the option to choose the Campaign Setting and SD as my first issues for my subscribe a little earlier but it's not that big a deal. Actually if it wasn't for people like you taunting us I wouldn't be anxious for it at all.

Rather than start a whole new thread for a single question, I just thought I would append this here. The sorcerer variant class ability (pg 50) lists the cost of using the ability as "the sorcerer is fatigued after the spell is completed," and goes on to note that the ability can be used a number of times per day equal to the character's Charisma bonus, but never while the sorcerer is fatigued.
Fatigue, by default, doesn't end until after 8 hours of rest, so how is the character ever going to be able to use this ability more than once per day?

When the character is immune to fatigue (as in the case of undead spellcasters) or after the character gets hit with a spell effect like lesser restoration that removes fatigue.

Yup. In 3.5, there are many ways to get around certain restrictions. Thus, additional restrictions must sometimes be added.

I haven't received my CS book yet, so I was wondering if someone with the book could answer the following question:
Is the bladed scarf and/or any of the other Varisian specific items in Ch. 5?
Thanks!
Bladed Scarf, dogslicer, etc. is in chapter 5 along with a bunch of new weapons and equipment.

Is there any reason to get the Gazetteer if you have the Campaign Setting?
Only if you want a very summarized and abridged reference. It lacks many of the additional discussions in the CS (flora, fauna, demon lords, prestige classes, etc.).
More specifically, the Gazetteer has discussions of races, classes, history, countries and religion for the major gods.

Is there any reason to get the Gazetteer if you have the Campaign Setting?
I likened the Gazetteer to a player-friendly version of the CS bk. This was important to me because it allowed me to point the players directly to the Gazetteer, without the need to cut and paste, etc, etc.

Katowice wrote:Is there any reason to get the Gazetteer if you have the Campaign Setting? The Gazetteer is also more of a player-friendly book, whereas the Campaign Setting is a DM-only sort of tome.
Um... wut?
I'm very interested to hear why you think that. The CS was designed from the ground-up to be aimed equally at players and GMs. I'm curious to know in what ways we failed to do that.

I wasn't going to get it, but you guys put up a PDF version, so I couldn't resist it. Definitely glad I got it. The intrigue between the different nations is amazing. The world lives and breathes, it speaks to me. Congratulations on making something truly amazing Paizo.
P.S. Isn't that the Whispering Tyrant on the cover?

I liked a lot of the gnome stuff - the idea that they become more colorful the more they experience is cool. Also that the Gnome language is a kind of Esperanto mish-mosh of other languages makes me grin.
I love the Mammoth Lords tribes kidnap giant babies to raise them as their tribal mascots.
I like that the Ulfen have added extra letters to their language just to have more letter than the old Taldane language. And that Draconic is a root language for everyone else.
I like that there's a section on trade, technology, the climate, time and distance. I also love the many sidebars that are rich with details that help make the place feel real and organic.
I also like that we have firearms, but that most places don't use them - the exception being the Duchy that is in a no-magic zone. That one picture we had with the guys with rifles and all is now explained.
The little class-substitution features are also nice for world-building.

small nitpick about the intro section ...
While it was nice to have Rob Kuntz and RA Salvatore write something in the introduction, did they have to self promote/remind us of their own works in the Pathfinder book?
It read like both were reminding us of their past credits with all teh comparisons more than the promotion of the book itself.
Mike McArtor's Introduction was excellent and inviting. That would have been enough on its own. :)

Yes it is. Knowing that really got me jived up for the CS, but I was disappointed to find out they wouldn't be statting major NPCs in it. It makes sense, though - the PFRPG final rules are yet to come, so why provide crunch that will just need to be converted anyway?
James has said there might be a book with NPC stats in it published separately. That's not a definite, but I'd certainly like to see it. I liked seeing their versions of powerful NPCs in Savage Tide. Seeing the cover of the CS immediately made me curious what ol' bag o' bones would be like. Don't tell him I called him that.
