Fan Websites???

Website Feedback

Not sure if this is the Sub-Forum in which to place this thread but its my best guess. Please feel free to relocate as needed.

My question -

What is Paizo's policy, if any, with respect to fan websites that would utilize Paizo intellectual property, for example Pathfinder material, in the creation of derivative works - ie fan fiction or fan created game material?

By way of example, please see Canonfire.com, wherein fans have posted fan created Greyhawk fiction and fan created Greyhawk campaign material that builds upon or expands upon officially published Greyhawk material.

Does Paizo:

a) Prefer no such fan websites be created?
b) Encourage the creation of such fan websites?
c) Express no opinion, pro or con, with respect to such fan websites?
d) Look to evaluate such fan websites on a case by case basis?

Can you please provide me with some guidance?

Thank you.

infact if you look at the various art threads, various editors have commented about the fan art there and similar questions have been raised and answered... I'll see if I can find the threads.. the first link below is the fan created stuff for RotRL and the second one is the fanart thread with lots of editor input

While very busy, the staff at Paizo have been helpful and receptive to the Pathfinder Wiki. In the earliest stages of it, we were in contact with a number of them on how to proceed without stepping on their IP toes. They said that any art from the blog was open to use, so we've been able to include all of that. As for everything else, we credit all sources for information, and make it a point to try in as many ways as possible to drive users here to purchase materials for themselves. I imagine that as long as you aren't claiming the property as your own, and aren't copying verbatim products that they hope to make money on, that you'd have no problem, but it's really a question Vic, Lisa or Erik should answer. I can't see how a larger internet presence would hurt Paizo though.

We are just in the very, very early stages of drafting a fan site document (as in "thinking and talking about it, but not yet actually writing it").

Until that's done, let Fair Use and other aspects of copyright law, as well as the OGL's open content clauses, be your guide about what's ok and what's not. (And, as has been pointed out, it's also ok to use material from the Paizo Blog, though we'd like proper copyright attribution wherever possible.)

While I don't have much in the way of detail to share on our policy right now, you can expect that we'll ask for a few reasonable restrictions (such as proper attribution, and restriction against using our IP for profit), and in return we'll provide access to additional content that isn't available under Fair Use or the OGL.

Thank you very much for your reply. This is helpful. I will check back in 6 months or so, if there has been no general announcement. I am aware that both Eric Mona and Sean Reynolds have some experience in this area and trust Paizo will have a solid fan website policy.

Somewhat related to this, I was wondering if it's ok to upload covers for Paizo titles to sites like LibraryThing or Amazon. Amazon has the mockup covers (or worse, no cover at all) for a number of Paizo products. Granted, a user contributed cover on Amazon isn't the same as having the "real" cover updated, but it would be better than nothing. While I could photograph the covers or screenshot and resize the pdf's I own, LibraryThing requires that the uploader should have permission before uploading any images. I think that something like this would be fair use, but I haven't done so (in spite of my nagging OCD) because I try to be respectful of copyright.

I would think Paizo would be very happy to see someone keep Amazon up-to-date on Paizo products since Amazon can't do it themselves.

Yes! And you can consider our product covers ok to use for fan websites as well.

Vic, just to clarify...

You said we can use material from the blog, does that include the art?

Yes, but please indicate that the art is ©2008 (or 2007) Paizo Publishing, LLC.

I assume we should also include something along the bottom like you have below.

"Paizo Publishing, LLC, is a registered trademarks of, and Pathfinder, are trademarks of Paizo Publishing, LLC. Most product names are trademarks owned by the companies that publish those products; use of such names without mention of trademark status should not be construed as a challenge to such status. Artwork ©2007-2008 Paizo Publishing, LLC."

Would that be ok? I know how lawyers are :) I think there are a couple of rules lawyers on the forums as well :)

You mean the ones with the pretty horsies?

Edited:

"Pathfinder is a trademark of, and Paizo Publishing, LLC, is a registered trademark of Paizo Publishing, LLC. Artwork ©2007-2008 Paizo Publishing, LLC."

(That middle bit I cut out is disclaiming all of the third-party trademarks we use in the store without specific attribution, so is probably unnecessary on your fan site.)

Also appreciated would be language like "For more information on Pathfinder Adventure Paths or the Pathfinder RPG (or whatever else you might be talking about), please visit http://paizo.com."
