A'loran, Brianna, Demon, Kava, and Madresh:

It's been a pleasant journey so far. The weather has been exceptionally warm and clear for this early in the spring. And despite popular opinion that the King's Road is dangerous, the most perilous thing encountered has been a bull moose. The meticulous defensive precautions of the dragonborn have begun to seem a bit overzealous.

Since entering the Nentir Vale you've passed through the Harkenwold, several small villages of farmers and woodworkers along the White River. After crossing the river, you passed along the edge of a forest (where said moose was promptly turned into dinner), and into the Moon Hills. After several days of journeying Fallcrest should be visible before sunset.

The five of you may now post any in character discussions that take place during the journey.

I will gather as much halfling history as I can while furiously writing in my journal. I will also keep a safe distance from the dragonborn. Trying to use my insight to gage their intentions. They seem friendly but events of late have been rather troublesome in relation to dragons. If one gets too close I'll release a startled "eek" and teleport behind a wagon or tree.

Now Demon is an oddity that requires more study. While hiding behind a wagon I'll quickly move up and poke him with a shaky finger. "Wow... your the first contruct i've ever seen" (ready to teleport away if it gets angry) "I didn't realize contructs would be so intellegent. From what I read they are mostly used to guard treasures of great wizards or guardians of powerfull rulers. Are you on some wizard misson? Have you dishonored some ruler and been banished to the wilds?" "well if you need to guard a wizard I could fill in" Looking warily over his shoulder to make sure the dragonborn haven't gotten to close. "I sure could use a guardian while I travel these parts"

A'loran Longstride wrote:

A heartily beaming Kava Argentine strides up towards the wagon A'loran is perched upon, writing intently

"Hail Eladrin! Well met" <bampf> there is a slight snap of air as the Eladrin appears to wink out of existance
"Ixen di Bahamut!" exclams Kava stopping dead with hand frozen in mid hail. "That's a good trick." She frowns to herself "that explains alot" she says under her breath.

------------------------------------

"Brianna is it? You don't seem the teamster at heart, but the Halfmoons treat you like family and you seem to know your way around. Do you know much of the ruins of this valley? Madresh and I are searching for heeka di aritroth ...ahh... the old temples of Bahamut that were here and most likely forgotten now."

------------------------------------

Kava sits in her bare underclothes bathed in the 1st light of dawn and deep in her surise prayer to "the Protector." Its a simple ritual of meditation that all come to know in the time spent with Kava.

Sensing her best friend close she stirs "Madresh these people are so much more than we had been told. They seem so willing to work hard and share a good life with each other... Maybe the world isn't a sea of darkness like we've been told, with points of light struggling. Just from our friends here and the hearty villagers in the Harkenwold I'd say it was a world full of the light of Pelor and the heart of the protector."

------------------------------------

"Vinult usk sthyr ... Greetings Master Golem. Forgive me but I no not what to call you. My halfling friends keep calling you the Demon." Kava frowns momentarily at the thought before breaking into what you gather is a draconic smile "but they are full of odd well meaning humour. I am Kava Argentine. What should I call you?"

Female Halfling Rogue 1

Brianna grins at Kava. "Well, truth be told, I'm not much of a teamster. I am a find baker, though, and everyone loves breads and pies, don't they? Fresh food is always welcome, don't you agree?"

The little halfling woman tends to be very playful and cheerful and happily engages in idle conversation with anyone, and does, indeed, assist in the cooking of the meals.

A'loran's Journal

Close call today. I was jotting down notes about the various families of halflings that have influence the local commerce when the smaller dragonborn bounds up with a big toothy snarl threating with one of its massive claws raised up and hisses soemthing that might have been Die Eladrin. It was hard to hear since I was in the middle of concentraing on my fey step. But while I was hiding under the second wagon I thought I heard Bahamut. I'll have to keep a close eye on that one. Vicious dragonborn yet utters the name of Bahamut a good Deity.

"Very much thurirl Brissa. Dragonborn food is simple fair and I'm afraid until we met up with the Halfmoons we had only eaten trail rations or food so vah ..." Kava's nose crincles and her argent skin flushes a wan grey. "But I must admit this past week has been as if my sense of taste has just hatched. If I continue to keep halfling company then I may have to get my armour resized." Kava chuckles in her rich alto voice.

Walking along behind the cart full of halflings, Demon's only thought was that the cart looked like it was infested. The two dragonmen were proudly stomping and snorting about, when he felt a jabbing at his back.
Turning, he was bowled over by an outpouring of words so fast he couldn't respond.
Yes I...you didn't...where did you...well of course...STOP! Demon thrust out his hand, sighed, and chuckled. The last words he had heard were "I need protection".
"From what?" Demon asked. Following the little mans gaze, he saw the two dragonmen laughing and talking with another breather.
"Not from them. Don't worry." Then he thought harder on some of the dozen odd questions that had been posed on him. "No, I wasn't disgraced by a wizard. I am no breathers property." He couldn't smile, but did his best to posture in a somewhat possitive manor.
"What exactly are you?"

"Hmmm" Kava's head hung in thought "I know what you mean, I think. I am plagued by my own demons, Madresh and myself ..."

Kava halted. Catching a glimpse of what might be what passed for a warforged smile bouyed her own irrepresible optimism. Thinking that she'd most likely been caught out by the warforged's dry irony she raised her head a beamed back at him with an equally inhuman smile.

"It is my pleasure to make your aquaintance Ushakal Kothar - Sir Demon" She bowed deeply. "Just no dragon lady humour and I can see we shall get along spendidly." Her lopsided smile was aimed toward some halfling children, who had insisted on calling her DragonLady for the past few days.

Demon looked at the Dragon... lady... bowing before him. 'I will never learn the differences between sexes in all of these breathers', he thought dryly to himself.
"As well, Kava. Just Demon, then. And there will be no dragonLADY humor from me, unless I am addressing the fine female dragon companion that travels with you," Demon finished with a chuckle, nodding towards the obviously not feminine complanion. "Where are we headed?"

Male Dragonborn Warlord 1

Madresh is so dep into his meditation that he barely hears kava speak as she bounds off into the camp. that girl is so excited, she's going to freak out the whole camp

Madresh then gets up and puts his armour on before going to scout the camps perimeter. He sees no signs that they are being watched and breathes out. it may make me a little unpopular but at least we are all still alive

As Madresh goes round the camp, he sees most of the group talking, and an Eladrin nearby furiously scribbling into what presumably is his journal. I'd better not disturb him, but I do want to know how rumoured that teleporation works

Approaching the main group, he hears the demonic looking one (Warforged was a term he had come across in an old battle tome, and it seemed to fit the bill) mention that he was called demon and chuckling about dragonladies. At this Madresh's blood turns colder, however, the group were talking in the sun, so it was practical as well as good manners to formally introduce himself there.

"Greetings good friends! I am Madresh, I do have a family name, but I prefer not to use it. You may call me whatever you wish though." Madresh said while putting his right hand to his chest. "shio vinult bahamut!" Madresh wasn't very devout follower of Bahamut but he felt that Kava appreciated it and that was what mattered. Curiosity got the better of him though as he asks "Forgive me for asking...Demon." Madresh hesitated "But I am fascinated by your body, how do you prevent it from corroding? If our armour looked as good as your body then we could serve as palace guards!" Madresh realises that probably wasn't the best way of phrasing the question and hopes that no-one notices his slightly naive wording.

Akva, A'loran, Brianna, Demon, Kava,

The last leg of your journey has been just as uneventful as the rest. As you draw near Fallcrest you pass scattered farms, as well as evidence that the land was once more heavily populated. Blackened foundations and crumbling stone walls show up much more frequently than any actual habitations. Any unspoken thoughts of "What happened?" are almost immediately answered by Selgund Halfmoon, the caravan leader. "Orcs did this. Almost 90 years ago an army of them came out of the Stonemarch. Fallcrest survived, but nobody can come to town without seeing what happened."

Here is the battle map.

Black squares are the carts, P indicates a pony.
White squares are either road or short grass and do not hinder moovement.
Grey squares indicate boulders or stonework, you can duck behind them for cover. Entering a grey square requires an Athletics check and 4 squares of movement.
Green squares are foliage. It takes 2 squares of movement to enter a green square and it provides cover.

Please indicate which square you're standing in, within 3 squares of any cart.

Anmuspi -

Spoiler:
You've followed the tracks and have come upon your quarry. The little beasts are ducked among the ruined farmhouses along the King's Road. It looks like you showed up just in time because they seem focused on a trio of halfling wagons coming up the road. The halflings have a handful of impressive looking guards, two dragonborn and a human covered head to toe in elaborate and evil looking plate armor, but an ambush doesn't care how nice your armor looks.

You are in square C2 on the map. Once I know where the others are standing I'll update the map and we'll start with the surprise round.

Yeah, probably from other dragonborn. That or one of those squirrels we just passed. One of them gave me a very angry look. Typically us Eladrin get along fine with the woodland creatures. Probably mad cause of those Dragonborn in their territory. Do you think we’ll be stopping for food soon? Weird that the big Dragonborn yelled out something about a clock face. I assume he’s talking about a sundial which is typically aimed south. I hope he can figure it out if I say that the squirrels are attacking from the north. Strange that all the others are so far away since that pile of rocks over there would make a great ambush point. I hope there is some more of that tasty bread left over. That would really hit the spot when we stop later. Whoa I almost stepped on some road apples. I do like apples but not that kind!”

Demon

Spoiler:
The dragonborn's precations prove founded. You don't travel much further before you notice small reptilian creatures armed with spears and javelins, adjusting in their hiding spots.

There also appears to be a human hiding in the bushes beyond the creatures. His bow is aimed at the back of one of their heads.

Initiative during the surprise round will be: the kobolds, Anmuspi, and then Demon. During this round you make make a single Attack, Move, or Minor action.

"Donotreska bwoihj, donotreska last!" ehoes from the surrounding hillside as small dark-scaled reptillian humanoids rise from hidden spots on both sides of the road. Javelins fly through the air.

Kava, you are hit for 2 points of damage by K1.
Brianna, K2 misses you.
Madresh, you are hit for 3 points of damage by K4
Demon, you are hit for 2 points of damage by K5
Madresh, you are missed by K6

You're up Anmuspi. I guess the best way to do this is to describe your action, then tell me any power you intend to use. If you don't list a power I'll assume you're using a basic attack. And if you move you can just list the final square.

Male Human Ranger 2

Ah, the little devils have shown their hand and are distracted. The time to act is now...

I will (if possible), move 6 squares low to the ground to [H4] and attempt to remain hidden. My expectation is that the only kobold I should be in clear view of is [K1]. The rest I should have some sort of stone or foliage or cart blocking line of sight.

I then look at Kava (under the assumption of caravan guard) and quickly point at K1 before aiming a shot (for my next turn) at K2, K3 or K4 -- whichever is closest that I can actually see.

Just to clear things up, to charge all of your movement must be in a straight line towards your intended target. And you can't take any actions in between. So, you'll be able to charge K2, but you won't be able to use your Divine Challenge.

Kava rushes towards the crumbling remains of a farmhouse and swings her flail in a wide arc, right over the kobold's head. The brave warcy let out by these creatures less than a second ago has lost some of its impact, seeing the diminutive things tightly gripping their spears in shaking claws.

A'loran hit K1 for 8 points

Male Dragonborn Warlord 1

In that case, I will do that same

With a roar, Madresh screams "Attack!" at the very point he a struck by a javelin and another glances off his shield. He tears the javelin out with a grunt and looked around to see one kobold disappointed that his spear had failed to strike.

Knowing kobolds and their sneaky kind are better at ambush and hiding than direct melee; Madresh decides the best thing to do is a direct attack across both flanks.

With the majority on the other side of the caravan, Madresh decides it's nest to deal with the others ones that he can see. Drawing his battleaxe, he moves to where he can see the kobold and charges in, screaming: "nomeno ui svanoa wux lowd vi irlym!" With this he aims for a solid strike across the chest.

In other words:
Minor action: draw battleaxe
Move action: P20
Standard action: Charge with Melee basic attack

Anmuspi winces in pain, focuses his attention on the kobold that stabbed him, takes a step back and then looses two arrows point blank into it. He notes K2's advance and prepares himself tactically.

Read as:
Minor Action: Hunter's Quarry -- K1 defined as Quarry.
Move Action: Shift to square I5.
Standard Action: Twin Strike -- 2 arrows at +6/+6 to hit, and 1d10+1d8+5 damage for the first arrow if it hits, and 1d10+5 damage for the second arrow if it hits.

GM

Spoiler:
Was I tracking 6 kobolds, or did I note a larger group at work?

Male Eladrin Wizard 3

OOC: my actions won't mess up kava too much and I'll be away from the computer for several hours.

IC: If K1 is still up I'll target him with another Magic Missle. If he's down I'll target K2 with a magic missle.

GM:

Spoiler:
Do I have any knowledge of these creatures?

M half-orc Dungeon Master lvl 18

Anmuspi's first arrow doesn't penetrate the rough hide that the kobold wears, but the second arrow strikes true.

Your second arrow hits for 13 (HQ was added), and K1 is bloodied.

Spoiler:
You followed 6 that broke off of a larger group.

M half-orc Dungeon Master lvl 18

Flames spring up around the kobold and instantly die out, leaving the kobold scorched.

Demon you dealt 10 points of fire damage to K5.

M half-orc Dungeon Master lvl 18

Kava's flail sends fragments of stone into th air, and once the kobold realizes it still has a head it begins laughing.

Sorry, missed again.

M half-orc Dungeon Master lvl 18

This time the wounded kobold ducks the silvery bolt thrown by A'loran.

Spoiler:
You do recognize these natural humanoids as kobolds, distant relatives of dragons.

Now it's Brianna, Madresh, and then the kobolds.

Female Halfling Rogue 1

The little halfling grins as her dagger draws blood on the kobold and then she is moving nimbly, slipping through the rubble to get a better position. "You little dragons picked the wrong wagons to ambush!" she taunts.

As a standard action I'll use Deft Strike which lets me move two squares before the attack and I go K10, L9. I'll need an athletics check for K10 and will draw an OA, but my AC is real good against them so I'll risk it. If I get there and hit, I'll be flanking so will add sneak attack to the damage. If he does not go down I stay there. If he does, I use my move action to move to L7, drawing an OA from K4 but setting up flanking on him.
