CMB & Fighting Defensively / Full Defense

Combat & Magic

This pretty much goes in the subject of: "what bonuses apply to CMB",
but I thought I would mention it while Beta is still being worked on.

Fighting Defensively/ Full Defense both helped avoid getting grappled, etc. under 3.5, since they both increased your Touch AC.

Since AC and DEX bonuses (without Feat) are now irrelevant to your defensive CMB, it seems like the wording of these actions should be updated to also apply their bonus to your CMB when resisting Combat Maneuvers.

Perhaps general AC bonuses should also apply to defensive CMB...?

Good catch! Excellent point.

I love the CMB mechanic - but there is still a lot of little nuances and rules that piggybacked on the rules for these meachics such as the one you just cited - that still need some better clarification.

The one I've still waiting on is if others can still take attacks of opportunities on someone that's being bullrushed

I was wondering about this this, and about whether your allies "aiding" you for defense would apply to CMB defense as well as AC.

This has come up elsewhere. I started a thread asking what to do when you try CMBs against flat footed opponents.

CMB sounds cool, but it has many weaknesses still. I'm waiting for the beta to see what will be done.

Do you have a link to that thread? Because i hit the wall just a bit in my last adventure when the question of attacks against flatfooted characters CMB came up. Id like to see what some other folks have suggested. On the fly what i ended up doing was applying a flat +2 bonus, but i was thinking of denying the Strength modifier instead.

No attacks of opportunity are already pretty solid benefits for attempting a CMB while the opponent is flat-footed + no dex mod if they happen to have the Agile Maneuvers feat. I think a +2 bonus would be better for invisible opponents.

Combat Manuevers *are* defined as attack rolls, just not against AC, so bonuses to attack should help. Bonuses to defense like full defense and fighting defensively adding in would make good sense. They are Dodge bonuses - perhaps simply allowing Dodge bonuses to add to CMB would make sense?

I would like clarification on using Combat manuvers with weapons. For example If I attempt to disarm an opponent with my +4 Longsword do I get a +4 bonus. I would assume no by the rules as written but it seems to make sense that a +5 Sword would be better than a normal long sword. What about using a spiked chain to trip or disarm? Would you gain a bonus if that weapon was masterwork? Also what spell effects would apply to CMB?

A few other things that should be added to the list:

Dodge bonuses to AC (such as from the dodge feat)
