Why do Sorcerers suck at item creation?

Races & Classes

I was just wondering why Sorcerers are paying more to create items? I see the reasoning behind Bards having higher costs since they get spells at lower spell levels, but why Sorcerers?

Because sorcerers are unformalised spell casters. They grasp at the theads of magic and twist them to their will by force of personality alone.

While, Wizards have years of training and ritual to call upon, helping them to achieve perminance in their workings.

Thats a flavor answer no better than "because I feel like it." I could make the same flavor argument that because their magic is innate, they should have a deeper connection to magic and it should be easier for them to invest items.

I'm looking for a mechanical reason. This change certainly will discourage Sorcerers from making items even more than they already are considering that they rarely can maintain a good spell list and still have enough spells useful for crafting.

The differing costs for item creation based on class is something I really don't like. This little quirk adds nothing but needless complication to item creation. Referencing a table to figure out costs instead of just remembering a simple formula is not a good change.

I agree on this. Sorcerers REALLY get shafted. Not only do they at least "feel" inferior to wizards..but..

They have to have their own feats in sourcebooks just to be able to use their equivalent of metamagic (sudden metamagic, etc.). Because They can't really use the metamagic in the PHB like the wizard.

And I have noticed they are screwed on item creation...seriously :\ I never EVER liked that. I didn't like the XP cost of item creation but when I wanted to actually go through with it I was horrified at how sorcerers get the shaft AGAIN!

How many times must we beat them with the "suck" stick?

Agreed. Sorcerers will be never as good item creation as well wizards (or even cleric and druids) cause of their limit spells known. It seems redundant to throw an additional penalty to the sorcerers item creation on top of that as well needlessly complicated.

Sorcerers aren't paying more because they're sorcerers, it's because they need to be a higher caster level to get the same effects. Otherwise they follow the same standard rules. (note they have no penalty for effects using 1st level spells or cantrips)

I'm confused. I can't seem to find reference to increased item creation costs for sorcerers. I'm probably just overlooking it; could someone point me to the page number?

Level 2 wizard spell scroll = CL 3 miniumum --> 150 gp

Level 2 sorcerer spell scroll = CL 4 minimum --> 200 gp

Personally, I don't really care; crafting doesn't come up very often in the games I play/DM in.

But again Level 1 and Level 0 scrolls are the same cost for both casters.

Also those are minimumswith certain premises assumed.. Lets say you're making a wand of magic missle and you want to make the most powerful one you can. so it would be at caster level 9th. The costs would be identical whether or not you are a wizard or sorcerer, the differences are only for minimum caster levels

And I agree for sorcerers, creation feats are a waste of time.

This isn't a factor in magic item creation. Page 112, paragraph 6 states the following; of particular note is the last sentence:

Since different classes get access to certain spells at different levels, the prices for two characters to make the same item might actually be different. An item is only worth two times what the caster of lowest possible level can make it for. Calculate the market price based on the lowest possible level caster, no matter who makes the item.

Hmmm...I was going by the table "Scroll Base Prices (By Scriber's Class)" from page 115.
