Concern about Staves

Combat & Magic

Thusfar I like everything I have seen in the new release (I've only read it for a few minutes) but I have a concern about the staff and the ability to recharge.

Now I love the ability to recharge, but if I use those powers but the recharge would make no sense to use in most cases given that it's "highest spell slot" for a single charge...therefor I would assume that you would never recharge the staff in the middle of an adventure, because the spell would be more useful.

I mean at 18th level I would be trading a 9th level spell for the ability to do "ice storm" if I had a staff of frost. Not a very good tradeoff in my mind.

I do LOVE the idea and I hate the concept that I'm a wizard with this powerful iconic item...and that item will go KAPUT in the span of about a week or two (I always hated that with a passion), so sweet on that fact.

If it's a game design to kind of limit use to a specific amount per game session then cool, but I still think a higher level spell slot should power up the staff a bit quicker.

What about still recharging 1/day, but gaining a number of charges equal to the level of spell sacrificed to do the recharge?

That's too cheap! Have a Staff of Fireball with 10 charges. Use 3 charges on day 1. Day 2 spend a 3rd level spell slot to regain all 3 charges of Fireball consumed on day 1.

I would think a recharge cost equal to the level of the spell being charged on the staff. So, in my fireball example, the 9th level wizard would need to expend a third level spell to recharge 1 use of the Staff of Fireballs.

Although, I'm not sure how big of a deal this is. Take 10 days between adventures to fully recharge a staff, and you'll never miss the spells.

Liberty's Edge

I think the intent is to prevent mid-adventure recharge.

That said, any spell of equal or higher level would work. It gives essentially the same limit, and fits from a flavor point of view -- it's the same amount of magic as the staff uses.

I agree. The spell slot that should get spent to recharge a staff should be equal to the highest level spell on the staff, or the highest level spell you can cast, whichever is lower. So, for a staff of fire, a 5th level wizard spends a 3rd level spell slot, but a 9th level wizard spends a 4th level one (since wall of fire is a 4th level spell).

I agree, except that I'd say that you shouldn't be able to recharge a staff whose highest level spell is higher level than your current max spell level.

Consider the following situation: 6th level wizard has a staff of fire, which he recharges regularly by spending 3rd level spell slots. He then levels up to 7th, and suddenly has to start spending 4th level spell slots. Why? What's the justification for recharges suddenly costing more?
