Charges Fix

Combat & Magic

The charges thing I think is broken. 50 charges is way too much for a wand (in my opinion obviously). The wand of cure light wounds (damn you cheap wand! Damn you to hell!) is kind of an example of how the wand charges thing is rubbery.

Here's a fix.

Wands are less powerful than rods. Rods, by and large, less so than Staves.

So Wands have 20 charges, Rods have 35, and Staves have 50.

Sure it's still alot and you might have to rebalance things but still, should work.

In that case, why would you buy a wand with 20 charges for 750 gp (37.5 gp/charge) when you could buy 20 scrolls for 500 gp (25 gp/charge)? You should get a discount for volume, not a penalty, right?

And why are you against wands of Cure Light Wounds? Running out of healing after one fight isn't fun for players in my experience.

I wouldn't be wholly against dropping the charges on wands to 20 if we also drop the cost of wands by 60%.

I concur, rogue with a wand of CLW is a GREAT substitute for an actual healer/cleric/whatever. Why take that away? For my part, I just absolutely love charged items, and have house rules for recharging them (thus draining more coins from the PC's pockets). Honestly, if the players would rather pay for healing, let them.

They feel like they're getting their money's worth, they usually have to keep in the good graces of one temple or other (for plot hooks), and I don't have to worry that the treasure tables are just a little more generous than they should be.

And even when you do have a dedicated healer and cleric, wands (personally, I'd rather have those incense censer thingies, or similar religious device) of healing still become a party must. ESPECIALLY once the fighter realizes he has the HP to 'macho' a fight out.

Now we just need something for status, or goggles of deathwatch, or similar. Ooh, Sleeping Bags of Status has a nice ring to it. And the fighters always want magic sleeping bags that let them sleep in armor... Hm, now I just need to suppress the desire to meld a SUGGESTION in there. I'm pretty sure 'stop doing stupid things that get you hurt' is WAY too broad for a suggestion spell.
